Albatross

Summary:

In a world where the line between memory and myth is thin, Ash and his companions discover that love leaves a long shadow. One airport confession sparks decades of intertwined stories—from Norman’s fall to Delia’s past to the song on the radio that sends a family into crisis. Albatross is a story of what’s true, what’s told, and what refuses to be forgotten.

Chapter 1: My Sweet Serena

Summary:

That last scene of XY that people care about, but with and Advanceshipping twist.

Notes:

Prerequisite / Reader’s Guide to Albatross

Albatross is a mixed-format story world.
Within these pages you’ll find several kinds of chapters:

Traditional fanfiction chapters — scenes meant as the “actual events” of the story.

Songfics and folk-ballad chapters — stories retold as music, gossip, memory, or legend.

AI-written or crack bonus chapters — exaggerated tales, rumors, or tall stories that exist within the world, not necessarily as literal history.

Some chapters are true to the characters’ lived experience.
Others are the versions sung by travelers, whispered in small towns, or wildly embellished by unreliable narrators.

It is entirely up to you, the reader, to decide what is canon.

I offer my own interpretations in the author’s notes, but at its heart Albatross is a world of stories about stories—truth, rumor, and everything in between.
As you read, choose the timeline that feels right to you.

Enjoy.

Chapter Text

“So, this is it?” Serena’s eyes floated around her three friends. The light from the high resting windows of the airport pierced her eyes whenever she dared to stare at any of them too long, especially him. Oh, how she let her eyes wander. She would creep her way up one side and down the other. A feast for her eyes.
Today, today was different. Today she would ride down that escalator and out of his life. If only she could remain in his heart and mind.
“Ok, it's time to go. Ash, Clemont, Bonnie, You’ve all given me so very much; more than I can say.” She gave her friends a closed eye smile and a little bob.
“Give us a call once in a while,” Clemont said. The gleam of the sun on his glasses blocked the small pools of water building around his eye. He gave a cheerful lie.
“You can be sure we're all gonna come and visit you,” The group’s youngest used her hands as a megaphone. She was too young to tell those kinds of lies.
“Ash, thank you, I'm glad I came with you. You’re the person I want to be,” she felt her lips built a monument to her heart and soul. “Next time we meet, you’ll like the kinda person I’ve grown into!”
“Awesome,” Ash was many things, but he couldn’t lie to his friends. It would take a minute for the pain of longing for his soon-to-be-gone friend to hit his heart.
“See you,” Serena waved before she allowed the escalator to steal her away. As she felt her love grow further her heart lost its patience with her mind. “Hey, Ash. There's just one more thing!”
Her feet fought against the machine’s urges as she climbed to love’s summit. She ran up and leaned in to be met with a mouthful of hair. “Pfeh,” she spat out what she thought to be love. Love turned to reveal a face more feminine than she’d remembered.
“Hey, Serena,” true love called from behind the false, “Didn’t know you were coming back up!” His face lit up. Yes, this must be for her. “Let me introduce you, this is May! May, this is Serena.”
Le Mensonge spun on her toes to meet La Vérité. “Hello, Serena! I’ve heard so much about you. Is it true that there’s no contests in Kalos? What are Showcases, how about the food? I have been dying to ask you in person for ages!” “This one,” the Coordinator gave a nod in Ash’s direction, “Has been absolutely no help.”
“No…preformances, uh food…” Serena’s lip monument had collapsed and been swept under the sands of time. “Food is good.”
“It sure is,” May cheered, “Me and Ash are going to the food court before our flight if you’d like to join us.”
“No thank you,” Serena swatted her face to shun her false sense of fear, “I really have to catch my flight.”
“That’s too bad,” Ash said, “I’ll miss you.”
“Awe, Thank you, Ash.” Yes, there’s still some hope. “I’d better get going,” she did her best to steal one of Love’s gaze from the lie as she descended into her own private Hell.
“Clemont, Bonnie, Care to join us,” Le Mensonge could be heard from Serena’s descent. There was no sound. “Maybe just maybe,” the Truth turned her head. Those hands, those dirty, lying hands were wrapped in his. She could see it. That movement after, it should have been her. Tom Petty would get an earful on the plane.
