Work Text:
The school day was winding down, and Danny Fenton sat at his desk, trying to focus on the algebra assignment in front of him. His thoughts, however, kept drifting to the fact that Dash Baxter was sitting just across the room, acting like his usual cocky self. He couldn’t help but glance over now and then, even though he really didn’t want to.
Why does it feel so weird to be near him? Danny thought, feeling a heat rise in his cheeks. It wasn’t like Dash had ever been anything but a jerk to him, but lately... something felt different.
It started a few weeks ago. Dash had started showing up at the same places Danny hung out—at the arcade, near the library, sometimes even at the mall. Danny had chalked it up to coincidence at first, but as time went on, he couldn’t ignore the way Dash would seem to look at him a little longer than usual. And the teasing had become... different, less mocking, more... playful.
Just as Danny was trying to sort through his feelings, he heard the loud, unmistakable sound of Dash’s booming voice echoing from across the room.
"Hey, Fenton! You staring at me again?" Dash's smirk was in full force, a challenge in his eyes.
Danny’s heart skipped. His face flushed, and he looked away quickly, hoping to hide the obvious awkwardness. "W-what? I wasn’t staring at you, you—"
"Sure you weren’t," Dash teased, pushing his chair back and standing up. He walked over to Danny’s desk, leaning over it with an exaggerated posture. "You’ve been acting strange lately. What’s up with you, Fenton?"
"I’m fine!" Danny snapped a little too quickly, then muttered, "Just... trying to finish my homework."
Dash raised an eyebrow, his gaze softening for a moment. He noticed the way Danny’s hands fidgeted, the nervous energy that radiated from him. It was... cute. He wasn’t used to seeing this side of Danny, the side that wasn’t so defensive and sarcastic. A flicker of curiosity sparked in Dash’s chest.
"Homework, huh?" Dash said, his teasing tone now almost gentle. "You know, you could just skip it and hang out with me after school. I heard there’s a new movie showing at the theater."
Danny froze. His heart raced at the suggestion, and he almost dropped his pen in surprise. Dash Baxter... asking him to hang out? Was this some kind of joke?
"What? Are you serious?" Danny asked, the words slipping out before he could stop them. His voice was laced with doubt.
Dash sighed, looking around the classroom to make sure no one was paying attention, then lowered his voice to a near whisper. "Yeah, I’m serious, Fenton. What, you think I’m just messing with you?"
For a split second, Danny wondered if he should play it cool, pretend he didn’t care, but the sincerity in Dash’s eyes made it impossible. His heart thudded louder in his ears, and he couldn’t stop the grin that tugged at his lips.
"Fine," Danny said, trying to sound nonchalant. "I’ll go. But only because you won’t leave me alone about it."
Dash smirked, his usual cocky grin back in place. "Good. Pick you up after school. Don’t be late."
The rest of the school day passed in a blur. Danny couldn’t focus on anything. His mind was racing, heart still beating faster than normal. It wasn’t that he didn’t like Dash—he just never imagined that Dash could like him in return.
When the final bell rang, Danny stepped out of the classroom to find Dash waiting for him by the school gates, leaning casually against the brick wall. His hands were shoved in his pockets, but his gaze was locked on Danny as he approached.
"You ready?" Dash asked, his voice low but not unkind.
"Yeah," Danny replied, trying to calm his nerves. "Let’s go."
As they walked to Dash’s car, the air between them felt different than before—less tense, more... relaxed. There were moments where Dash would glance over at Danny, and for once, Danny didn’t feel the need to defend himself. There was something comforting about it.
At the theater, as they watched the movie, Danny found himself laughing at Dash’s sarcastic comments during the film. Dash would sneak glances at him, his expression softening whenever Danny would chuckle or make a funny remark. The night felt... easy. Like they were finally seeing each other in a new light.
After the movie, they stood outside, the cool night air swirling around them. The moment stretched on, neither one sure of what to say next.
"I guess this is where I’d say ‘thanks for hanging out,’" Danny said awkwardly, but his smile was genuine. "I didn’t expect you to actually... want to spend time with me."
Dash stared at him for a moment before shrugging, his usual cocky attitude returning. "Well, maybe I’m not as bad as you think, Fenton."
Danny raised an eyebrow, his heart skipping a beat. "Maybe you're not."
The two stood there for a moment, the tension finally breaking. And then, for no reason at all, Dash took a step closer to Danny, his voice quieter than before.
"You know... I was actually kind of hoping you'd say that," Dash confessed, his eyes flicking to the ground before meeting Danny’s gaze again.
Danny’s breath caught in his throat. "Wait... are you saying—?"
Dash cut him off with a grin. "Yeah, I am. But don't go telling anyone, alright? I have a reputation to maintain."
Danny laughed, feeling an odd mix of relief and happiness. Maybe he’d never fully understand why Dash was acting this way, but for the first time in a long time, he didn’t really care.
"Deal," Danny said, his smile wide. "I guess we’re more than just rivals after all."
Dash nodded, and the two of them walked off into the night together, the beginnings of something new between them.
