I Am Not That Hero

Summary:

The title has been updated for now, old title was Crisis Core FF7. OC x Canon character. It's just following the main adventure of Crisis Core and Zack's story where my OC is working with Zack and being his friend. My OC is a cis-guy so in general I would say this fic is for masc readers.
Anyway this has been rotting in Google Docs and might as well post it. (If there are any spelling errors please ignore them or I'll fix it later.)

Notes:

There is probably grammar errors as I haven't edited this in a few years but at least it's posted.

Chapter 1: Enter!

Chapter Text

*Akai POV* Zack, Angeal, and I are currently on a training mission, sitting in the helicopter. We all hear a voice as it begins to explain the mission.

“Wutai troops have hijacked Shinra Express MK93 ||.

The train is currently headed to Midgar Sector 8. Two SOLDIER operatives will be inserted to neutralize the situation.

We are to proceed as scheduled.

Commence mission in 3 2 1 mark.

Begin mission.”

As soon as Zack and I hear those words we go towards the opening of the helicopter door.

“Operatives are ready for insertion.”

“The train has been overrun by Wutai troops. Eliminate them and regain control of the train.” Ageal says this as Zack and I look back at him with a nod.

“Oh yeah!” Zack gives a small smile and a thumbs up before jumping out.

I hear Angeal say get serious to Zack as I jump out after him.

We both land on the train safely and stand up.

“Zack!” We both hear Angeal’s voice and turn around.

“Zack, Focus.” Zack gives a small glare at Angeal but stays silent.

“There are no Shinra troops on this train. Understood?” Zack stays silent and continues to glare before turning away from Angeal. He punches his hand and smirks running down the train.

“Akai.” I turn to him, giving him my attention.

“I trust that you'll keep him out of trouble… And stop holding back.” I nod running after Zack.

Never knew he noticed.

Catching up to Zack as we both get shot at. Zack starts to lose his balance while trying to dodge the bullets. I pull out my sword blocking the bullets and grab onto Zack’s shoulder so that he doesn't fall forward.

He gives me a nod in thanks before running farther down the train, bullets missing him.

While we're running, more Wutai troops in Shinra outfits climb on top of the train holding their guns aiming to fire.

“Come and get it!” Zack says this with some enthusiasm pulling out his sword.

As soon as he said that, they started to shoot us.

Zack is blocking the bullets covering for me as I cut them down. He smirks until more gunshots are fired.

This time he keeps blocking while jumping into the air, cutting some of them down.

Zack then keeps running and then jumps over most of the Wutai troops smirking.

I sigh but follow in his lead.

“SOLDIER 2nd Class Zack, on the job!”

I don’t say my rank outloud but Zack didn’t seem to care. Zack disconnects a part of the train and I jump onto the moving side standing next to him. Zack puts his sword back on his back as the helicopter light shines on us.

“Train MK93 || re-routed to Sector 1 near Mako Reactor 1. Proceed to mission phase 2 and change surveillance rank…”

The train then stops as Zack has to flip to get to the ground. I just jump off the train walking behind Zack. Zack then stops walking looking around until his phone rings. He answers the call while I stand next to him.

“Zack speaking.”

“Making progress, Zack?”

“What’s going on, Angeal? Why are we fighting Shinra Troops?”

“They're Wutai Troops in disguise. Now, head to the open area above.”

“Towards Sector 8?”

“Yes. But first, you have to clear a path.”

“Clear a path?”

As soon as Zack says this Wutai Troops come running out of the opening holding their guns. I pull out my sword as Zack is still listening to Angeal.

“You’ll see what I mean. Be careful.”

The Wutai Troops start to shoot at Zack and I’m blocking the bullets for him while he’s finishing up his call.

“So, I can cut loose, right?”

“Use some discretion.”

“It’s showtime!” Zack shouts hanging up before setting his phone back in his pocket

Zack then pulls out his sword and I see him start to use some fire, lightning and ice Materia while also using his sword. Some of the Wutai Troops hit us with their bullets but they were taken down quite quickly after the fact.

Zack gets another phone call from Angeal and answers it.

“Not too bad.”

“Piece of cake! I’ll make 1st in no time!”

“Go up the stairs at the end of the platform.”

“You got it!”

Zack then starts to run up the stairs and I follow him, sighing. No wonder his nickname from Angeal is Zack the Puppy.

As we're running up the stairs Zack stops looking at all the people running down.

We then keep running up the stairs dodging all the people. As we get closer to the platform there seems to be a monster up there.

It slams its paws and tail on the floor roaring at us.

Zack and I pull out our swords looking at the beast.

It tried to swipe its claws at us but we were able to move away somewhat. It was able to swipe a small piece of my hair but I was fine with that. I got to keep the act up anyway.

Zack then attacks one of its legs, distracting it. I then attack one of its back legs using fire materia.

The monster then begins facing me trying to attack me.

“Zack. We can keep switching like this so we don’t get injured as much and take down the monster faster.”

“Alright!”

Zack then uses fire Materia seeing as it was pretty effective.

The monster then spins doing a tailwhip. I managed to jump up high, getting a power surge and being able to see its neck cutting the monster down.

After I got the final hit on that monster we both put away our sword. Standing next to him a long sword is pointed at us. I start putting my hand closer to my sword just in case.

“Showing your back to the enemy… Overconfidence will destroy you.”

Zack puts his hands up and sighs turning around. I turn around staring at the sword pointed at us.

Sephiroth SOLDIER First Class.

Zack gasps looking at him.

“W-What is this!?” He looks shocked as Sephiroth just lets out a hum.

He moves his sword going to stab Zack until I block it. We start to engage in combat as Zack has no idea what to do. I parry Sephiroth’s attacks before he pushes me away. I drop my sword as Sephiroth is about to plunge his sword into me.

Zack blocks, struggling against the force.

Sometimes I hate having to pretend but to me it doesn't matter that much.

“Damn it, you're not the only hero!”

“It’s over.”

As soon as Zack tries to attack, Sephiroth flings him away causing him to break Zack’s sword. Standing up and running to grab my sword Zack falls to the ground.

As Sephiroth looks at Zack on the ground he gives a small laugh and smiles. He then positions his sword about to kill Zack.

I only watch as I don't think I could make it in time. But I have a feeling, I’m waiting for something to happen.

I opened my eyes to see that I was correct that something would happen. Angeal blocked Sephiroth’s attack with Zack’s broken sword. He lets out a sigh as Sephiroth pulls his blade away.

Zack then sits up looking at Angeal.

“Thanks, Angeal.” Zack says this in a thankful tone as Angeal pulls out his phone doing something.

The room starts to fade back to normal and I sheath my sword.

“Training’s over.”

“Wha-? why!?”

Angeal then points Zack’s broken sword at him. He stumbles back a little but regains his composure.

“You serious? I was just getting warmed up! Zack takes off the headset, throwing it on the floor while walking closer to the tip of the broken sword.

I take my headset off holding it in my hands.

Angeal then flips the sword around waiting for Zack to take it. Zack then takes the sword looking at it. He sighs as Angeal walks over to the exit.

“Zack, Akai. Embrace your dream.” He waits as Zack turns around confused.

“Huh?”

Angeal seeming to understand this stops walking.

“If you want to be a hero you must have dreams… and honor.” He turns his head and looks at the both of us. He then walks away as Zack looks at him.

“Hm…”

Zack rubs his head as the door closes behind Angeal.

“I still barely get what he’s trying to tell us. Do you know Akaki?”

“Yes.”

“Could you tell me what it means then?”

“You will figure it out Zack, don't worry.”

He pouts when I say that but then just smiles running out of the training room

Chapter 2: Promotion.

Summary:

This chapter is really short so I might add onto it later. Just lost of talking with Akai.

Notes:

There is another OC in here named Shin, he isn't too important just Akai's friend.

Chapter Text

*Akai POV* I got called down to follow Angeal to go meet with someone. As I’m walking with him we enter a room with a blond guy wearing glasses.

“Ah, Akai. My name is Lazard, Director of SOLDIER.”

I nod and look at his outstretched hand. I shake it then let go, placing my hands by my side. Director Lazard sits back down in his chair as I look at him.

“Akai.”

I look over at Angeal to find him already looking at me.

“I recommended you for 1st a while ago.”

“You did!?” I try to control my excitement and let him continue.

“I did. You had the skill and were able to stand your own against Sephiroth… somewhat.”

I frowned at the slight jab into my performance as a SOLDIER but at least he inflated my ego first. Director Lazard clears his throat, ruining my train of thought but I look at him.

“Starting today you are a 1st Class SOLDIER.”

I look back at Angeal then back at Director Lazard. Angeal gives a small smile and I give one back.

“Go celebrate if you want. Dr. Hojo wants you when you're done.”

I nod at Director Lazard before looking back at Angeal. He nods at me to go celebrate for the day, so I leave the room and then start sprinting down the hallways.

As I’m running through the hallways I’m about to run into someone until I side step to get out of the way. I slowly came to a stop when they called out my name and turned around to look at them.

“Your name is Akai, right? I’m Kunsel. Zack’s friend.”

“Yes, my name is Akai. It’s good to meet you Kunsel.”

“Oh um yeah. You must have been in a hurry so I won’t keep you. Bye.”

Kunsel waves at me as I wave back. He walks away as I continue to sprint down the hallways finally finding Shin.

“Oh hey Akai.”

“Hey Shin!”

“You seem excited. Are you feeling okay?”

I give him a small smile and chuckle.

“Yeah, I'm doing fine, Shin. I was wondering if you wanted to hang out?”

“Sure!”

He smiles and we walk to my room. I open my door letting him inside. Shin sits on one of the mats on the floor as I sit on the other one.

“So… what got you so excited today?”

Before I can answer him there's a knock on my door. Shin looks at the door and I get up going to open it.

I open the door seeing Angeal. I look at him with a bit of a confused expression.

“Wasn't expecting someone else here. No matter, we can talk later.”

“Okay, if we're going to talk later maybe in an hour or so.”

Angeal nods and walks away. I shut the door and face Shin walking over to sit down again.

“Who was that?”

“Angeal. You probably have heard of his name before from him being a 1st Class SOLDIER.”

“I have heard about him, mostly from other SOLDIER’S though.”

I give a small chuckle thinking about other SOLDIER’S either looking up to Angeal or being scared of him..

“So what was your question again?”

“Oh yeah um, what got you so excited today?”

“Oh… you see you just gotta wait a bit longer to find that out.”

Shin starts to pout but smiles again.

"Well I know I said I could hang out but I just got reminded of the training that I have to go to, sorry!"

"Trust me it's fine. Besides Angeal said he needed me for something and I would rather not have him waiting too long.

"Thanks for understanding, I promise we'll hang out again later."

I stand up and so does Shin. I open the door for Shin waving my hand in a goodbye as I close the door to get my stuff together. Who knows what Angeal wants me for, besides it's always good to have my sword on me. I've wasted enough time now.

Time to get going.

Chapter 3: A Mission to Wutai

Summary:

Quick talk with the Director of SOLDIER. Lots of dialogue and more of Zack speaking.

Chapter Text

*Zack POV* I’m doing squats in one of the Shinra hallways as Kunsel walks in.

“Hey Zack, you seem a little on edge.”

“Can you blame me? All this training and no assignments. Like they're hanging me out to dry. You must be pretty busy with everyone off-base.”

“Off-Base? Wait, haven’t you heard? There's been a mass desertion at SOLDIER.”

I stop squatting looking at Kunsel confused. Kunsel also stood up from where he was sitting.

“It appears one of the 1st deserted. He took a bunch of 2nd and 3rds with him, too. Nobody knows why he left, or what he’s up to. The mass desertion’s the reason why your training is on hold. Heads up, a 1st!”

I turn to where he is looking as Kunsel straightens his posture. I see Angeal walking through looking at me.

“Zack, new assignment.”

“Woo! Finally! Some real action!”

I run towards Angeal and stop in front of him. Kunsel is still standing looking at me kind of confused.

“This will be your show.”

“Yes!”

“Report to Director Lazard. We’ll give you the details.”

Angeal walks away as I follow after him while finishing my conversation with Kunsel.

I walk into the room seeing Angeal, Director Lazard I think, and Akai.

“Zack. It’s good to finally meet face to face. Lazard, Director of SOLDIER.”

He stands up and stretches out his hand. I look at it and shake his hand with a small smile.

“Heya!”

“Onto business.”

Lazard types on the computer and I look at the screen shocked.

“SOLDIER 1st Class Genesis. A month ago he went missing during a mission in Wutai. Know anything about this?”

“Not a clue!”

“This mission is currently stuck in limbo. That’s why we’ve decided to send you and Akai.”

“Uh, to Wutai?”

“Yes. This war has gone on long enough.”

“I’ve recommended you for 1st.” As Angeal interrupts the conversation I turned around with excitement.

I felt a smile make its way to my face and I took a few quick steps to Angeal.

“Angeal! I love you man! Ang- -” I wrap my arms around his shoulders and smile widely before he pushes me off. I grunt softly and heard a small chuckle from both Director Lazard and Akai.

“Don't make me regret this, Zack.”

“Sir.”

“Once you're packed, you'll leave at once with Akai.”

“Alright!”

As Angeal stands up to leave I turn to look at Akai with a soft smirk.

“I'm recommended for 1st! I'm not doing too bad as a SOLDIER now am I?” It was a rhetorical question and I continued to smile.

“Whatever you say Zack.” I roll my eyes as I see Akai cross his arms but he still shoots me a soft smile.

Director Lazard clears his throat before speaking and that turns both our heads.

“I'll be joining you as well. I'm counting on you.”

“Sir.”

“Yes sir.”

“By the way…what is your dream, Zack? “To become 1st” is it?”

“No. To become a hero!”

“Ah, good! Unattainable dreams are the best kind.”

“Uh, thanks?”

“What about you, Akai?”

I turn to look at Akai and tilt my head to the side. What is his dream? Now that's something I'm actually interested in.

“Are you going to make a snappy comment if I tell you my dream like you did with Zack’s? If so, I'm not very keen on answering you, Director.”

“I can assure you I won't be rude.”

“Well then…I suppose my dream is to become strong so that I can protect others that can't protect themselves.”

“Very admirable.”

“Haha, you sound like a hero, Akai!”

I see Akai roll his eyes before he gently pats my shoulder.

“You need to pack.”

“Right!”

I quickly ran out of the room but not before shooting the Director and Akai one more glance.

Notes:

Next chapter will be a bit longer I think, now that I'm reading it over it. It's the wutai mission so yay on that.

Chapter 4: Fort Tablin

Summary:

First mission in Wutai after the mass desertion at SOLDIER.

Chapter Text

*3RD POV*

Wuati - Mount Tamblin

Akai, Angeal, and Zack are all running up the mountain before skidding to a stop.

“Fort Tablin is straight ahead. Let's hurry, B Unit is standing by.”

Akai nodded at the order before he pointed to the Wutai Soldier.

“You three! Identify yourselves!”

“Just leave it to me!” Zack said as he pointed at himself.

Two other Wutai Soldiers joined the first one with all of their weapons drawn. Akai glared and pulled out his sword despite the words of Zack. Angeal stood on edge but gave Zack a nod. Akai stood still but his gaze was sharpened, just in case anything went wrong. Zack smirked as he took down the first Wutai Private with ease.

“Later!” Zack commented as he sliced the other two Wutai Soldiers.

Akai sighed at Zack’s antics and ran a hand through his hair.

The conflict ended with both Zack and Akai putting their swords back on their backs.

“All right, next!”

“Calm down, Zack. Keep him in check, Akai.”

“No can do.”

“I'm not the damn babysitter.”

“The director is watching from somewhere, right? I have to make a good impression.”

Angeal took a few steps forward before he spoke.

“Zack…do you know about dumbapples.”

Akai laughed at the question, thinking it was an insult towards Zack. Zack just remained confused and asked what they were with his arms crossed.

“No, what is that?”

“Unbelievable. How can you not know about dumbapples? You'll never make it to 1st at that rate.”

Angeal started to walk away again and Zack stood frozen in shock. Akai didn't laugh at this insult but caught up to Angeal as he walked away. Zack jogged to catch up to the both of them.

“Whoa, wait! What are dumbapples!?”

Angeal ignored the question and kept walking away.

“Akai!?”

Akai shrugged and also continued to walk with Angeal. Zack groaned and caught back up with the group.

After a few minutes of walking up the mountain Zack pushed the question again.

“So Angeal, what's the deal with “dumbapples”?”

“The official name is Banora White. The trees bear fruit at random times during the year. Because of that the townspeople affectionately call them dumbapples.”

“I thought you were just calling Zack dumb.”

“Akai! I'm not dumb!”

There was a pause lingering on the air before Angeal went to continue his story.

“The local farms had plenty of them to spare.”

“Oh, really? So you stole them.”

“We were poor, Zack.”

“Nice excuse!”

“But even then, I had my honor. The largest Banora White tree grew on a wealthy man’s estate. It was rumoured that those apples tasted the best. But I never stole from that tree, because the wealthy man’s son was my friend.”

“If he was a friend, you should've just asked for some!”

“I'm going to have to agree with Zack on this one.”

“Honor can be quite the burden at times.”

“...And what exactly does this have to do with me?”

“No story is not worth hearing.”

“And now I'm going to have to agree with Angeal. I want a dumbapple now…”

Akai brought a hand to his chin and rubbed it, Angeal walked away again but this time with a laugh.

“What? That's it? Yeah, well, thanks a lot!”

Zack and Akai ran to catch up with Angeal and Akai chuckled softly at Zack’s current attitude. Once they were in step with Angeal they slowed back down to a normal walking pase.

A calming atmosphere settled within the trio as they walked in silence. The moon was bright tonight, which helped guide them through the mountain. They all walked until a building came into their field of view. They all got closer to the building and took a knee.

“B Unit will set off an explosion. That's are cute.”

“Got it.”

“The diversion will allow us to infiltrate.”

“Right. I'll set the bomb inside the fortress. You and Akai will charge the front gate, and…”

“Uh-huh, and? And? And? And?”

“Indulge yourself.”

“You got it! That's what I do best!”

“I think that's pretty clear. You act like a puppy.”

Zack didn't here the quiet insult from Akai and stood up, impatient as ever.

“Come on, B Unit…”

Angeal pulled his sword off his back and gently rested his head against the cool metal. He put it back on his back in a smooth motion and Zack crouched back down.

“You know, I've never actually seen you use that.”

“I haven't seen you use it either.”

“Don't you think it's sort of a waste?”

“Use brings about wear…tear…and rust. And that's a real waste.”

“You're serious, aren't you?”

“Yeah. I can be pretty cheap.”

“Yeah, no kidding…”

“Maybe it's because you used to be poor that could alw- -”

Akai was cut off as the bright light from an explosion went off. The noise followed quickly after and the trio was back on edge.

“Begin mission.”

Zack nodded with a smirk and quickly kept ahead, flipping down to lower ground. Akai followed after with less of a flair for the dramatics. Angeal separated from the two young SOLDIERS, ready to begin his part of the mission.

*Akai POV* As I jumped down next to Zack I saw the Wutai Soldiers guarding the front gate.

“No one passes beyond this point! The enemy is only two men! Obliterate them!”

“Well Zack, it's showtime.”

“Couldn't have said it better myself!”

Zack and I quickly rushed forward towards our opponents, as they did the same. I saw the soldiers on top of the wall and shot everyone a glare.

“Zack, be careful. There are soldiers on the wall with guns.”

“Oh please, as if any of the bullets will touch me.”

I rolled my eyes at his hero complex and swept the leg of one soldier. I stopped my sword through him and quickly took a step back before I could get hit by one of his buddies.

The rest of the fight was easier than expected as all Zack and I had to do was cut them down with our swords. I saw Zack spin his sword before setting it back onto his back.

“All right! Piece of cake!”

“You're right about that too.”

I continued to carry my sword as we ran towards the front gates. We slowly pushed them open so that we could keep quiet. I saw one of the fortresses' high vantage points and waved Zack over as we climbed onto it. I surveyed the area, watching all the Wutai Soldiers walk around. Zack, being as obnoxious as ever, jumped straight down in front of the Wutai Soldiers.

“Zack you- -” I groaned and quickly jumped down next to him.

The soldiers immediately spotted us and drew their weapons.

“Enemy attack! It's SOLDIER! Don't let them get through!”

I let out a soft groan and shot a glare at Zack.

“We could've chosen to be stealthy, you know?”

“Where's the fun in that? Don't be such a buzz kill, Akai.”

Shaking my head, I impaled one of the men charging at me and pushed him away with my foot. Watching him fall to the floor, Zack had already taken care of the other two soldiers. I wiped my forehead with my gloved hand and jumped when I heard a phone ring. I saw Zack sputter out a laugh before pulling his phone out of his pocket.

“Were you guys able to get inside the fortress?”

“Piece of cake! I could've done it blindfolded!”

“Don't get too careless. I've heard that Wutai keeps a large monster for anti-SOLDIER purposes. It should be somewhere inside Fort Tablin.”

“If I take it out, do you think I'll make 1st?”

“It depends on the quality of work. You and Akai’s main duty is to draw the Wutai troops to you by running amok.”

“See Akai! Stealth wasn't a needed option.”

“I can't even hear what he's saying on the phone!”

“Are you done bickering?”

“Sorry…”

“Anyways, do that well, and the director will give you a favourable evaluation.”

“Oh, that'll be easy! Just leave it to me!”

I saw Zack pull the phone away from his ear and set it back into his back pocket.

“Well? Going to update me on what that phone call was about?”

“Oh, yeah right! Essentially I'll make first if I can take out this SOLDIER stopper thingy.”

“Well, let's get on with it!”

I smirk at Zack and quickly run through some doors that lead into a hallway. I think this is the inside of Fort Tablin. More Wutai Soldiers stand in our way and I take cover behind the wall with Zack.

“We have to make our stand here! Ready! Aim! Fire! End of the line, SOLDIER! Reinforcements are coming! You can't escape!”

“Okay Zack, what do we do? Charge forward or find a different route?”

“Isn't my option obvious?”

I watch Zack charge forward through the hallways and I follow right after him.

“Sergeant! They're coming this way!”

“Do not falter! Charge them! Tch! Damn you!”

I take care of two Wuati Troops while Zack takes down the Sergeant.

“Long live the Wutai…”

I ignore the words spoken by the Wutai Sergeant and run past his body, through the hallway and up the stone stairs. Zack stops suddenly to take another call.

“Well done, Zack. We have successfully occupied Fort Tablin. I was really only expecting you to get their attention. Most impressive, I must say. I'm very pleased with the results thus far. Proceed to the next objective.”

Zack hung up and gave me a thumbs up.

“Proceed to the next objective!”

Chapter 5: Anti-SOLDIER Stopper

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

*Akai POV* I push the doors open, which lead into a big open area, right in front of the main entrance of the fort.

“Ah! That must be the central area!”

“Well, it's in the middle. So it would make sense if it was the central area, you know”

“I know! I'm not dumb. I know what central means.”

“Sure…come on, let's head to it.”

Zack let out a scoff and followed me towards the building. Once we got inside the entrance we stopped, hearing a voice speaking.

“One, avoid unnecessary training! Two, protect Wutai at all costs! Three, ugly Shinra SOLDIER dudes must be punished!”

“Who are you?”

“I'm Wutai’s greatest warrior! If you wanna go further, you have to go through me!”

“A kid?”

“I mean, we're only teenagers.”

“Yeah, but that's a kid! A literal child! Anyway, you shouldn't be playing here. It's dangerous! Go home to your parents.”

“You’re the one who's going home!” The kid jumped down behind Zack and I, so we just turned around.

“If you insist on going any further, you'll have a fight on your hands!” The girl rushed forward at Zack and I moved to stand behind him.

“Oh man, what am I supposed to do here?”

“Whap! Pow! Bam! Take that, bad guy!” I watch the girl in front of Zack and try not to laugh. She punches the air in front of his stomach, not actually hitting him.

“... Arrrgh! Nooo! You got us!” Zack pretends to fall to the ground pushing me down in the process.

“I wasn't- - oh whatever, you got us!”

“There! That'll teach you not to mess with me! Once again, I've brought peace to Wutai!” The girl ninja runs away and I push Zack while I stand up.

“Could've at least warned me!”

“Hey! It wouldn't have been believable then!”

“This still didn't look believable!”

“Akai, you gotta admire that energy though.”

“I suppose. Reminds me of someone though.”

“Well, back to work. I guess.”

I shrug and follow Zack up the stairs, to the doors that the girl was blocking earlier. We push through the door and walk to the middle of the room.

“Zack! Watch out!”

I grab the back of his collar and pull him backwards with me, as two monsters jump down

“I thought Angeal said there was only one anti-SOLDIER thing!?”

“That's what I thought too!”

We both draw our swords, spreading out a bit to create some distance between us and the monsters. I watch the monsters as they do some sort of charge up attack. Before I can even try and guess what they're doing they shoot out two sword beam slice things.

“Holy shit!?” I yell as I roll out the way. I hear Zack groan in pain and I wince at the noise.

“Focus, Zack!”

“Yeah, I get that now.”

Zack and I continued to stab and slice the monsters, which was taking a really long time with all the dodging we had to do. Zack lands what seems to be the final blow, as one disappears into ash, flying away while the other stops moving. I put my sword back on my back as Zack turns his back towards the monster. I see it twitch and as it’s about to hit Zack. I run over taking the hit for him getting sent into a wall. I slide down the wall rolling on the floor holding my head.

“Akai!” I hear Zack yell out as I grit my teeth. I groan softly before rubbing my head.

“Don’t worry! I got this!”

Zack runs over to me as the monster gets up, quickly cutting the monster down. This time it turns into ash as well. I look up and see Zack's hand. I grab it and pull myself up.

“Whoa! That's a lot of blood man.”

“I'm alright. My back hurts a lot though, stupid sword.” I touch the back of my head and bring my gloves hand to see the red on it.

“I'll be fine.”

Zack is about to speak to me again before his phone rings.

“SOLDIER 2nd class Zack and Akai, victorious once again!”

“Good work. Now, get out of there quickly. There's only five minutes until detonation.”

“Understood!” Zack hangs up and looks around the room for a moment.

“Director Lazard, are you watching?” There was silence and I just stared at Zack.

“Yeah, I'm leaving.”

“Gotta move!”

As Zack starts sprinting, I follow right next to him.

Another monster appears and my eyes widen in shock as well as annoyances.

“Not again!” I shout, dragging Zack back by his collar again.

“Oh, come on! We only have five minutes until they detonate the thing! No time to play!”

Zack dodges out of the way of the first attack and I roll away. Zack jumps up in the air, using his momentum to push himself downward to attack the monster. The monster falls to the ground and I keep my sword out.

“Did you get it?”

“I think so?” Zack walks around the monster, studying it.

I walk closer to Zack and stare at the monster. I see the monster twitch and push Zack out the way. Gosh damn it, not again! I get smacked into the wall again. My sword fell from my hands as I slid down the wall.

“Akai!? Oh this is not good!” Zack ran in front of me and. I try to point to the monster letting Zack know it’s about to hit us until suddenly the monster gets sliced in half.

I look up and see a familiar sword.

“That’s one more you owe me.” I sigh in relief seeing Angeal and relax.

“Angeal!” Zack yells looking at him.

“You lost your focus. Your lucky Akai was there.” He says this in a strict tone.

“Uh, yeah? Oh, sorry if your sword got any wear, tear, or rust on it.”

“You're really quoting him right now?” I shake my head and sigh.

“You guys are a little more important than my sword. But just a little.” Angeal says this with a small smile making a small hand motion for how small the importance is.

“Thanks!”

“Yeah, thanks Angeal. Glad that I'm a little more important than your sword.”

I smile in return with a soft grunt. I move to sit criss-crossed as I bring my hand back to my head. After a few seconds I pull my hand off my head, seeing all the red on my glove. Sighing once more I look back up to see Angeal offering me his hand. I pull myself up and Zack decides to comment on my bleeding head again.

“Whoa! Um, are you okay there Akai!? That’s a lot of blood there.” Zack says this in a worried tone and I just nod.

I'm getting some serious déjà-vu…

We all quickly run out of Fort Tablin, making it back out to the mountain area. While we're walking we hear a voice and turn around.

“Sorry to keep you waiting. I'm not used to being on site.”

“You didn't have to come.”

“This operation will bring an end to the war. I have to see it through properly.”

“That's pretty admirable, Director.’

“Thank you, Akai. SOLDIER 2nd Class Zack.” I see his posture straighten and I try not to snicker. Angeal jabs me in the side and I grunt.

“Sir!”

“You performed your duties admirably at Fort Tablin. I saw it with my own eyes. Frankly my evaluation of you is…”

I see Zack tense and Angeal moves to be in front of Zack, next to Director Lazard.

“You supported Angeal well by diverting the enemy. An acceptable level of work for a 2nd. Be ready for your next assignment.”

“Zack, do you know the difference between a 1st and a 2nd?” Zack shrugs and I sigh.

“A SOLDIER 1st Class performs above and beyond the call of duty at all times. Remember that.”

“Yup. Best you remember it, I had to go through the same lesson too.”

“What? Why- -”

“Now, let's hurry.” I chuckle softly as Angeal cuts Zack.

“Sephiroth is waiting.”

“Sephiroth? Angeal, he's actually waiting?” Angeal nods and I hum in a low town.

“Sephiroth!? The SOLDIER hero? Wow! I get to meet a hero!”

While Zack continues to monologue I walk away with the Director and Angeal. We continue to walk for a bit, without Zack and I turn around to see him just standing around.

“Zack! Come on!” I turn back around to look at Angeal as he calls for Zack.

Once Zack catches up he stares at the bodies on the floor.

“I guess we're in for another battle.” I mumble when other Wutai Soldiers appear.

“Take the Director to a safe place.”

“Then contact Sephiroth.”

“Zack and Akai are more than enough. You know this Director. Now, go.”

“Follow us, Director.”

“I promise you Zack is capable.”

“Very well. Let's go.”

I send a soft smile at Zack and we all start running away from the situation.

Chapter Text

*Akai POV* I put my hand on a sword as Infantrymen appear in front of us. I sigh, realizing it was just Shinra troops, letting my hand slip off my sword.

“Thank goodness you're safe, Director Lazard.”

“I should be fine now, Akai, Zack. Go and assist Angeal!”

“I know, I know!”

“On it, sir.”

Zack and I turn away from the Director as we start running back to Angeal.

“Angeal!” We both come to a stop as Zack shouts. “Angeal!”

I walk up to the bodies on the floor and crouch next to the two of them.

“Zack…”

“What? These guys aren't Wutai troops.”

I fall backwards as a flaming orb appears in front of us. Quickly gaining my bearings, I stand up and pull out my sword. A bright light flashes in front of my face and I hold my arm over my eyes, to block out some of the light.

“What the hell!?”

As Zack spoke I open my eyes and my mouth goes wide. Where the hell are we!? In hell?

“A summon? Who called it out?”

“Good question! I don't know!?” I hold my sword in front of me and take a moment to breathe.

“Let's use that one thingy we did when fighting the other monsters!”

“You mean one of us attacking from the back while the other attacks from the front?”

“Yeah!”

“You handle the front then!”

I ran around the monster as Zack did his job of attacking and being a distraction. We ran back and forth, attacking with our swords or using materia to damage it. Suddenly, the summon started to charge an attack up. I curse quietly and start to back away from the summon.

“Whew, it's getting hot in here.”

“Well no shit!” I yell as the monster slams a flaming fist into the ground.

Fire erupts from the cracks in the ground, my eyes widen as it burns me. I wince in pain but don't falter. I quickly ran forward, holding out my sword.

“Zack, give me a boost.”

“Yup!”

I run up and onto his sword as he pushes me upward towards the summon. I let out a soft growl as I stab my sword into the summon’s head. It slowly falls to the ground with me still on top of its head.

Letting out a long sigh, I stumble while the summon rises again and shoots a fireball towards Zack, who has his back turned.

“Zack!” I shout, while trying to get my sword out of its head.

Another familiar sword appears as his hair flows through the flames. I jump off the summon and smirk to myself. Wasn't expecting to be saved today.

Standing next to Zack I quickly help him off the floor.

“Holy…”

Sephiroth couches down next to the troops on the floor, taking their helmet off.

“Genesis…”

“The missing SOLDIER 1st Class?”

Sephiroth takes the helmet off of the other, revealing the same face.

“They're identical!”

I bite my lip as I stare at both the Genesis clones.

“A Genesis copy.”

“Copy? A human copy?”

“Where is Angeal?” I flinch at the sudden tone change and I shake my head.

“I thought he was fighting around here.”

“Humph, so he's gone, too.”

“What?”

“Sephiroth, what do you mean by that!?”

“It means Angeal has betrayed us as well.”

“No way!”

“You're not really saying that, right?”

“I know what kind of guy Angeal is. And he'd never do that!”

Sephiroth took a few steps before turning to look at Zack and I. There was no way Angeal would leave us like that…

“Angeal wouldn't betray us! Never!”

I hesitantly look up at Sephiroth, just to confirm if what he thought happened to Angeal was true. He just stares back and I lower my gaze back to the floor. My hands clench into fists while I continue to stare at the floor.

Damn it, Angeal…

Chapter Text

*Zack POV* Man, what is with Angeal? How long is he gonna slack off like this? It's been a month now! Sephiroth’s got it all wrong, too! Limping Angeal together with Genesis! Genesis is a deserter who took a bunch of 2nds and 3rds with him! He used his copies to attack us! Angeal would never condone something like that! He valued his SOLDIER honor more than anyone else! Ugh! Everything’s so messed up these days! Angeal! Just come back, please!

I'm doing squats in the hallway, with Kunsel standing not too far away. I pause for a moment as my phone rings and I bring it to my ear.

“Soldier 2nd Class Zack?”

“That would be me. Who is this?”

“Director Lazard wants to see you. Go to the briefing room.”

“Hey! Wait!” The call disconnects and I close my phone.

“Who was that?” I shake my head and make my way to the briefing room.

I walk quickly and step through the automatic doors to the briefing room, walking to Director Lazard.

“Any word on Angeal?”

“He hadn't contacted his family either.”

“And since he supposedly hasn't contacted his family, he definitely won't be contacting us.” I jump as I hear Akai speak before sighing softly.

“So, what's this about?”

“A new assignment. I want you and Akai to go to the hometown of our missing SOLDIER 1st Class, Genesis.”

“Huh?”

“According to the parents, they've had no contact with Genesis whatsoever. But, they can't be trusted.”

“Why?” I put my hands on my hips and stare with slight confusion.”

“They're his family.” I look away and nod with a slight hum.

I see Akai staring at me with a dumbfounded look and I can only shrug my shoulders.

“I had already dispatched some staff, but we lost contact. I want you to go investigate. He will go with you.”

Raising a brow I look at Akai before turning around to see some man with a small ponytail. Like a top knot.

“Tseng, of the Turks.” He turns to look at me and I make eye contact back.

“This job is looking really gloomy.”

“Let me know when you're both ready to go.”

Turning back around, I look at Akai before walking over to him. He has his arms crossed while he leans against the wall.

“You think this will help us find Angeal?”

“Can't be too sure…I hope though. Anything else you need before we head off?”

“I think I'm ready. I was getting bored in the hallway anyway.”

“Alrighty then.” Akai pushes himself off the wall and I walk with him back to Tseng.”

“Ready to go?”

“A routine job, right? No sweat!”

“I wonder. Originally Sephiroth was assigned to this mission. That means it's a top-priority matter. Be alert, or you’ll fail.”

“And Sephiroth?”

“Refusing to go, apparently.”

“Oh, what is that? They spoil him too much.” I see Tseng stifle a laugh and I look at him with confusion.

“Why don't you say that to his face?”

I put my hands up and shake my head. “Uh, no thanks!”

I hear Akai chuckle quietly for what feels like the first time in weeks. I smile in his direction as he smiles back.

*Akai POV* I'm shaken awake by Zack as we land on even ground. I look around for a moment before stepping out of the helicopter with Tseng and Zack. I walk behind the two as I rub the sleep out of my eyes. We walk under curved trees, one of the leaves getting stuck in my hair. I pull the leaf out of my hand and let it fall to the floor.

“Weird-looking trees.”

“They are Banora White Trees. AKA- -” I cut him off and my eyes widen a little.

“Dumbapples.” I see Zack shoot me a look but I just look at the trees we're under.

“Wait, that means we're in Banora? Angeal’s hometown?”

“That is correct. Genesis and Angeal have known each other for a long time.”

I nod and sigh softly. That means we're one step closer to finding Angeal. If we can talk to Genesis’ parents here then we can also talk to Angeal’s parents. While we're walking I walk straight into Zack’s back. I look up and see two men standing at the end of the trees with weapons. Zack rushes forward and I follow in pursuit, making sure not to run into him this time.I pull my sword off my hip and hold it out in front of me, ready to fight, like always.

Zack rushes forward and I go to the left to stop the man from using any ice magic. Both were cut down quickly and I sheath the sword back on my hip.

“These guys! I saw them in Wuati, too!”

“So they are here.”

“More Genesis copies…” I mumble to myself as Tseng gives me a look.

“We haven't seen any of the townspeople. They may have taken control of the entire town. When Genesis deserted he took a large arsenal of weapons with him. The president’s orders are to retrieve or destroy these weapons immediately upon discovery.”

“Leave it to me.” Zack pumps his fist in the air and runs off.

“Would you like me to stay with you, Tseng? Or stay with Zack?”

“The choice is yours, but I strongly suggest keeping him out of trouble.”

“I'm not the damn- -” I caught myself and started to smile softly.

“I'll go with Zack.”

Tseng raises a brow at my tone change and I start to run in the direction of where Zack had run off too.

As I'm running around Banora I see those same two men, lying on the floor, while back stand over one without the helmet on. Looking past him I see the Shinra Machine behind him.

“A Genesis copy.” Zack turns to look at me and I just nod slowly.

“Where did you hear that?” I jump as Tseng enters the conversation.

“Sephiroth said it.”

“The technology was stolen from our scientists.”

“Huh?”

“It apparently allows Genesis’s abilities and treated to be transplanted…to SOLDIER members…and monsters.”

“SOLDIER and monsters…we're the same?” Tseng doesn't answer his question and I start to walk away.

If us and monsters are the same, then I'll turn my dream into a promise. A promise to protect those who can't protect themselves.

It didn't take long for my train of thought to get interrupted by Tseng. I look up and eye the large house.

“This is Genesis's home. His parents are wealthy landowners.”

I follow Zacks gaze, seeing him eyeing the tree that was over Genesis's home.

“They weren't mere acquaintances. They grew up together, and were best friends.”

“So Genesis deserts and get his best friend Angeal to join him…is that it?”

“Sephiroth believes that's the case. There.” Tseng points to what seems to be a grave, my expression sourers.

“A gravestone. Still very new. Zack, go find Angeal's house. I'll check the grave.”

My brows furrow as he goes to check the grave, my hands resting in my pockets. I know this is important for the mission but messing up a grave just seems wrong without the permission to. Zack is still standing by me and Tseng starts his walk to the grave.

“Ugh, so Turks always do this stuff?”

“Someone has to do it.”

“Must be rough.”

“Yeah, I agree. Seems like a very sucky job to have.”

“Don't worry. We are paid much better than you are.”

“No way!”

Tseng crouches down next to the grave, placing one of his hands on the rocks.

“Zack, go and check Angeal’s house. It should be in the group of houses over there. Be careful, the area may already be under the enemy’s control.”

We both look past Tseng, staring at the small group of houses in the circle. Zack and I walk down the path together, stopping to look around.

“Let's see, Angeal's house is…I have no idea!”

“They all do look pretty similar.”

“We'll just have to check each house.”

I walk to the left, picking up some materia sitting next to the home. I walk to the front door and knock. It takes a moment before the door opens and a woman greets me at the door.

“Can I help you?” She sits back down on a rocking chair and I stand in the doorway awkwardly.

“Good afternoon, Ma’am. Are you Angeal Hewley’s mother?” She doesn't answer me and I nervously tug the fabric of my pants.

“My name is Akai, Akai Shintaro.”

“Are you Akai, the fox?”

“Wha- - I'm a what now? My apologies, that's rude. I'll be right back with my partner assuming you are Angeal’s mother.” I give her a small smile as I run out of the doorway. I spot Zack standing at a house and I grab his shoulder.

“Found her.”

“Great!”

I walk him back over to the house and Angeal’s mother greets me with a smile.

“And you are?”

“Uh, greetings Ma’am. My name is Zack.”

“Are you Zack, the puppy?”

“Excuse me?” I gently hit Zack in the side and shoot him a look.

“Don't be rude.” She chuckles and I straighten up my posture.

“My son wrote to me once, about you both. Zero attention span, restless as a little puppy.” She chuckles once more and I can't help but stifle a laugh.

“Thanks, Angeal. Well, what'd he say about Akai?”

“Fierce looking like a fox, but in reality he's a big softie for his friends.” I roll my eyes and Zack nudges me in the shoulder.

“You're not…here together with Genesis, are you?”

“No, we're not Ma’am.”

“Mhm, don't worry.”

“What is happening with my son?”

“I'm not really sure.”

“But that is why we're here, we're going to find out what happened.” I watch her expression shift to something sadder and I pull at my pant leg again.

“Genesis came back here, a month ago, with an army of cohorts. And they proceeded to take the lives of many townspeople. Genesis…he used to be such a good boy.”

“Is Angeal…?”

“He came here. But, he left his sword and went off somewhere.” I turn into the direction she's looking, seeing Angeal's massive sword.

How did I notice that? Zack walks over to the sword and I keep my spot in front of Angeal's mother.

“That sword represents our family's honor.”

“I see…no wonder. He never uses this sword, really ever.” Zack crouches down to one knee and looks up at Angeal’s mother.

“I'll- - we’ll take care of Angeal. You should go and hide somewhere.”

“Don't be concerned. Genesis…cannot harm me.” Zack stands back up and takes another look at Angeal’s sword. I follow his gaze to the sword and sigh softly.

“Thank you, Ma’am.” She gives me one last smile and I gently tap Zack's shoulder, walking out of her home.

Almost as soon as we step outside, Zack’s phone rings.

“There's a factory on the outskirts of town. I saw a Genesis copy go inside.”

“You think that's their headquarters?”

“Most likely. I'm currently on a cliff overlooking the factory. A frontal attack is inadvisable. We'll go in from above. Come to the clifftop immediately.”  I watch Zack flip the phone shut, setting it back into his pocket. He turns to me before speaking.

“Tseng wants us to head to the clifftops. Apparently there's a factory over there with a Genesis Copy.”

“Maybe Genesis and Angeal are over there.”

“I hope so. If Angeal’s there he'll definitely be getting a piece of my mind!”

“Yeah…we should get going. Wouldn't want to keep him waiting, you know?”

“Yeah, I know. The factory is on the outskirts of town.”

I nod and start to walk out of the village. The walk was quiet for not even two minutes before Zack spoke up.

“Before I forget…when were you going to tell me that you were a First Class!?” I blinked a few times before sheepishly rubbing the back of my neck.

“Okay, well…I was going to tell you but I didn't really want to be a bother about you, you know?”

“No! I don't know! We were supposed to become First’s together…” I watch him pour and I can only stare sheepishly.

“Okay…I was really going to tell you but I didn't want to make you seem worse than you are, at fighting and stuff like that. Then, it was already too late to tell you because we started training again and so much stuff got in the way. I was going to tell you after the Wutai mission but Angeal decided to run off and we were both pretty depressed about it.”

Zack pauses at my rant and I bite my lip. He places his hand on my shoulder gently parting it.

“Whao man, don't get too pressed on it. It's alright, really. I was just teasing and stuff.”

“Sorry. After Wutai I've been a mess.”

“Well I think everyone after the Wuati mission has been a bit of a mess. So you're not the only one.”

“Thanks, Zack. Wait, how did you even figure out I was a First Class?”

“Kunsel told me.”

“Of course he did.”

“Well, it was more like we, as in me and you- -”

“You mean, you and I?”

“Shut up. As I was saying, we were walking down the hallway and I saw Kunsel. I waved at him and he just straightened up his posture, same as when Angeal came to get me for the Wutai mission. But as I stopped and you kept walking he mentioned that he didn't know I was friends with two First Class SOLDIER’s. I gave him this crazy look while I just pointed at you. So then, he just nods and that's how I found out you were a First."

“Oh. Why didn't I stop when you stopped?”

“I don't know man. This was right after Wutai when you were really out of it. You sort of weren't even listening to what I was talking about in the first place.”

“Sorry about that.”

“No, it's alright. I don't even remember what I was talking about that day anyway.”

Zack shrugs and I see that we're standing behind Tseng, looking over the factory. I must've been really distracted to not even notice we're on a cliff.

“Genesis’s parents were in that grave.” Zack crouches down next to Tseng and I stay standing, behind them.

“Wait, he…his own family?”

“We can't expect reason from him. What about Angeal?”

“He wasn't at the house.”

“But please, give me time! If we find Angeal, we can talk to him.”

“Before you continue Zack, I have something to say about this whole Angeal thing. Tseng, while Angeal wasn't at the house we did talk to his mother. He left his sword at the house. I didn't catch her name though…”

Tseng gives me a short nod as Zack starts to speak again.

“But please. If me or Akai can convince Angeal, maybe Genesis will come back too.”

“I understand now why Sephiroth chose you.”

“Huh?”

“Genesis and Angeal. Those two were Sephiroth's only friends. He didn't want to fight them. That's why he refused the mission.”

“Well, Angeal is my friend, too!”

“He's counting on you both to bring them back. Time is short, let's go.” Tseng stands up and I walk to the ledge that's closer to the factory ceiling.

Taking a few steps backwards I run and crash through the glass ceiling, Zack and Tseng following right after me.

“Infiltration successful!”

Three Genesis copies appear in front of us right after Zack speaks and I pull my sword off my hip.

“Go on ahead. I'll take care of things here.” I give Zack a nod and follow Tseng. My sword stayed drawn, just in case.

Tseng finds some stairs and I follow him up. Zack is on the other side of the upper floor as I look around the factory once more. Just checking for any other Genesis clones.

“Zack, this way. Keep an eye out for enemies.” As Tseng speaks I see Zack nod from the other platform.

He makes his way down the ramp to us and Tseng leads us into a room. I stand by the entrance, keeping an eye and ear out.

“Looks like the copies are being made here. Check the second floor. Genesis may be there.” I turn around to look at the open door behind me and Zack’s already walking that direction.

“I’ll go with him.”

“That would be wise.”

While walking up the stairs I hear Genesis’s voice. My hands already hovering over the hilt of my sword.

“Infinite in mystery is the gift of the goddess. We seek it thus, and take to the sky. Ripples from on water’s surface. The wandering soul knows no rest.” As Genesis speaks I watch him carefully. He smirks in our direction before speaking again.

“Settle down…Zack the Puppy.” Zack glares and I hear Tseng quickly run up the stairs behind us.

“The grave at the house. We found the remains of our people there as well.”

“It didn’t take much to have them send false reports. Just some mild threats…” Tseng walks closer to Genesis but stops when Zack speaks.

“They would’ve done that anyway. At least your parents would have.”

“My “parents” betrayed me. They had always betrayed me, from the very beginning.” Genesis stood up and my hand gripped the hilt of my sword. There was a heavy silence over us but it was broken when Genesis spoke again.

“What do you know? Shrina lapdogs!” Genesis shoots fire at Tseng and he slams into the container where the copies were being made.

Zack reaches to pull out his sword and I pull mine off my hip, holding it in front of me. Familiar boots walk in front of Zack and I. A big sword resting against his back while he points Zack’s sword at Genesis.

“Welcome, partner.” Angeal doesn’t say a word, just raising Zack’s sword in front of him.

“I see…you’ve finally made your decision. I’ll respect your wishes, old friend. However…” Genesis walks next to Angeal speaking a little softer.

“Can you really live on that side?” Genesis walks away and Angeal turns around.

“Angeal!” Zack tries to get close and Angeal pushes him back. Before Zack can get any closer, Angeal stabs his sword into the ground. I glare at Angeal and he glares back.

“Tch…” Angeal walks away as I pull Zack’s sword out of the wooden floor. I hand it back to him, walking over to Tseng to check up on him. Zack ran back down the stairs and I struggled to keep my emotions in check.

“You okay?”

“I’m fine…you should be following Zack. We need to get out of here, quickly.” I gave him a slow nod as he brushes himself off.

Pulling away from Tseng I ran downstairs, looking for Zack. I see him at the factory entrance, the doors opening while revealing two Shinra hound dogs. However, they aren’t very friendly looking with how they bared their teeth at Zack. Before Zack pulls his sword out, Tseng from behind shoots them both.

“Well you’re very quiet…” I mumble while I look at him from the corner of my eye.

“There’s no time. We have to leave now.”

“We’re not gonna go look for those two?”

“All evidence of misconduct must be erased. Company rules. An airstrike will neutralize this town. Are you sure that nobody is it Angeal’s house?”

“...”

“Hurry!”

Zack and I ran through the small cluster of hound dogs as Tseng handles them. We continue to run back in the direction of the village, only stopping when we can see the houses coming into view. I take a few deep breaths as Zack pulls out his phone.

“I just received word that the airstrike is about to commence. You have to hurry.” Zack put his phone away, turning his attention to me.

“I hope Angeal’s mom is alright…we have to hurry!” Our gaze went in the direction of her home and we quickly ran over.

Just as we made it to the door Zack’s phone rang.

“I explained our situation and had them briefly delay the airstrike… That will buy you some time.”

“Thanks, Tseng!” I watch Zack visibility relax before pushing the door open. He freezes and I gently nudge him in the shoulder.

“Zack, what’s the holdup?” I gently push past him and my gaze lands on the woman laying on the floor.

Her chair is knocked over while she lays on the floor next to it. I take a sharp inhale, my hands clenching into fists. I turn around, my gaze landing on Angeal. Zack stumbles backwards with a soft gasp as he stares at Angeal. His sword is on display, signifying that he was the one that cut his own mother down. Cut her down with a sword that was supposed to represent their family’s honor. A sword he was never supposed to use because it would be a waste. A waste because it would bring, wear, tear, and rust. Zack acts on his anger and grabs Angeal by the collar of his shirt, pushing up against the wall.

“What the hell did you do, Angeal!?” Zack pulls Angeal to the doorframe before throwing a fist at his face. Forcing him to the floor outside.

“Is that…is that your idea of honor!?” Angeal pushes himself off the ground and I join him outside.

“My mother…could not continue to live. And neither can the son.”

“What are you talking about! What’s going on here?”

I walk over to Angeal punching him in the face as well. He stumbles back and before I can throw another Genesis interrupts me.

“I told you. You can’t live on that side anymore.” Genesis stands by the doorframe in front of Zack and Angeal puts his sword back on his back. Angeal starts to walk away and my hands clench again.

“Angeal!” Zack runs forward only for him to be tripped by Genesis. I turn around and glare at Genesis.

“Angeal!”

“My friend, do you fly away now? To a world that abhors you and I?”

“Shut up!”

“All that awaits you-”

“Shut up! I’m warning you!”

“-is a somber morrow. No matter where the winds may blow. I don’t see Sephiroth today, but…are you game?” Genesis holds up a summon materia and I grab Zack by the arm, pulling him to his feet.

Light flashes in front of us as the terrain warps around, forming a rocky field. Bahamut flies around us and I grit my teeth.

“A summon!? So that’s how it is, huh!”

Well at least this will be a good way to vent my anger.

Bahamut flies around while Zack and I attack it, eventually dissipating. The materia falls to the floor and Zack kneels down to grab it. The world around us slowly fades back to our actual reality. Zack holds the materia in his hand, holding it up to Genesis.

“Summons aren’t meant to be used like this! What happened to dreams and honor!”

“We are…monters.” Genesis extends his arm, a singular black wing appearing under his right shoulder.

I held my hand out, grabbing one of the feathers out of the air.

“We have neither dreams nor honor.” Genesis spares us one last look before flying into the air. More feathers rain down on us, slowly falling to the ground. I watch Zack let a feather land onto his hand and he stares at it for a moment.

“SOLDIER…doesn’t mean monster.”

My phone buzzes in my pocket and I pull it out, bringing it to my ear.

“The airstrike is to commence shortly. Are you done here?”

“Yes.”

“Good. The helicopter will be at the top peak of the cliff. Meet me there now.”

I hung up and tapped Zack’s shoulder.

“We need to go.”

“Right.”

We quickly walk up to the top of the clif, the helicopter arriving as soon as the bomber plane flies off. I don’t turn back as I walk up to the helicopter, finding my seat. I felt the heat on my back…and it’s not something I ever want to experience, ever again. I never even got to ask for her name...stop thinking Akai.

“Angeal…” Zack mutters before joining us on the aircraft.

Notes:

While playing, I can't help but laugh a little every time Genesis trips Zack. Another thing that doesn't make sense is how they keep their balance while flying with one thing, very cool looking but not very practical logically.
