The corridors of the Hazbin Hotel were unusually loud today, more than typical. The distant clang of pans from the kitchen, the chatter of restless guests, and the hum of magical energy all collided into a cacophony that made Vaggie’s head throb. She pressed her palms against her ears, her knees slightly buckling as she leaned against the cold wall of the hallway. Her normally precise posture was gone, replaced by a slouch that screamed exhaustion.
She had retreated to the back corner of the lobby, assuming no one would find her there, not that she felt anyone other than Charlie would scout out to look for her that was.
Her breathing was shallow, almost panicked. “Way too...much..." she muttered under her breath, her words clipped, almost jagged, like a dull blade. The lights above flickered occasionally, a strobe she hadn’t noticed before—or maybe she had, and now it was too much. Every shadow, every movement in the corner of her eye, set her nerves on edge.
From the shadows, a faint, almost musical chuckle echoed. It was slow at first, then grew, filling the space with its unsettling yet strangely charming presence.
She turned quick; eyes tracking the sudden sound that filled her head up.
It was a dark figure until it came closer, Alastor.
“Well, well, what do we have here?” Alastor’s voice cut through the noise like a perfectly tuned radio, soft yet commanding. His wide, sinister grin was intact as always of course, but there was a gentleness to his tone that immediately caught her off guard. Making her blink twice in confusion. Vaggie flinched, instinctively lifting her arm defensively, but then realized—he wasn’t mocking her. Not this time. His usual manic energy was present, yes, but softer, less overwhelming. He tilted his head, the black tips of his antlers catching the light.
“You seem… troubled,” he said, stepping closer, though carefully not invading her space. His eyes, bright red as always and ever half lidded, studied her with genuine curiosity rather than his usual teasing malice. “I… I’m fine,” Vaggie snapped, but it was weak. Her voice cracked slightly, betraying her words. Her wings twitched involuntarily, the gray gradient feathers rustling against her blouse.
Alastor raised a single brow, unimpressed by her denial, but the grin softened into something almost… comforting. “Oh, nonsense, my dear. You are very much not fine. I can see it in your posture, in your eyes, in the way the lights make your skin crawl.”
Vaggie’s jaw tightened. She didn’t want pity. She didn’t want fuss. But the truth was undeniable: the hotel, all of it, was overwhelming.
Alastor crouched slightly, bringing himself to her level without looming too much over her. “Tell me, hmm… shall we make the world quieter for a moment?” She blinked, confused. “What… what do you mean?”
He snapped his fingers, and the sound of the hallway dimmed, the constant background noise fading into a muted hum. The lights flickered once and steadied. The air seemed to calm, almost like the building itself was listening. “Sometimes, one must take control of one’s environment. And sometimes, one must have a gentle hand guide them. Allow me to lend mine.”
Vaggie’s breath caught in her throat. She wanted to resist—but the overwhelming relief was instantaneous. Her knees stopped shaking, her hands unclenched, and she let out a shaky sigh. She had attempted her best to remain composed, but even now she struggled.
“Why… why would you…?” Her voice was soft now, almost disbelieving.
Alastor’s grin returned, smaller, less toothy. “Because, my dear, even a creature as diligent as yourself deserves a reprieve. Besides…” He leaned slightly closer, whispering theatrically, “…I do enjoy a challenge, and you, my little moth, are a most intriguing one.”
And somehow, almost somehow; his voice was like a calm wave. Almost making her relax if not for the rigid stiffness of her posture, still defensive as if ready for an attack at any notice. Always so Attentive even when in this state.
Vaggie couldn’t help but this time accept the comfort, if that was what Alastor was offering her that is. She shifted slightly, allowing herself to relax, even if just slightly, just enough to test the waters. “I… I can’t… deal with… all of it sometimes.” She murmured, her voice a soft sound, half uncertain and half resigned.
“And you shall not have to,” Alastor said, voice as soft as velvet but still carrying the unmistakable timbre of a radio signal. He extended a gloved hand, carefully, invitingly—not in mockery, not in showmanship, but as an anchor. “Lean on me, hmm? Only for a moment. Just… breathe.”
She blinked again, her face twisting with disbelieve, was he really attempting to help her?
Her wings twitched again, but this time from relief rather than agitation. She hesitated, staring at the long, slender fingers, the sharp red tips that didn’t feel threatening somehow. Then, slowly, cautiously, she rested her hand atop his. The contact was grounding, a tether in a sea of sensory chaos.
Alastor hummed softly, the sound vibrating just enough to be comforting. “There. That’s better, isn’t it? Even if the world is loud, even if it’s… unbearable… you do not need to face it alone.”
Vaggie closed her eyes, letting the sensation of quiet wash over her. “I… I think… I think I can manage now.” Her voice was steadier. More like herself.
Alastor tilted his head, chuckling lightly. “Ah, there it is! The Vaggie we know. Fierce, determined… and quietly brilliant.” He gestured with a sweep of his hand, and the hallway’s muted hum began to rise slowly back to normal—but this time, she felt ready, prepared, not overwhelmed.
She opened her eyes, and for the first time all day, the lobby no longer felt like it was closing in. “Thank… thank you, Alastor.”
“Ah, the pleasure is all mine, dear lady,” he replied, stepping back slightly, giving her space while still remaining nearby. “Consider this a… special service, just for you. And do not worry—I will keep an eye on things for the duration of your delicate sensibilities.”
Vaggie allowed herself a full smile, wings gently unfurling. “I… I appreciate that.”
Alastor tipped his head, the grin returning to its chaotic elegance. “Now, shall we see about finding a little quiet corner for tea, perhaps? Or maybe a room where the world cannot bother you for a while? Choices, my dear, are power, and I do enjoy empowering others.”
For the first time in hours, Vaggie felt a spark of calm, even warmth, creeping through her senses. Maybe, just maybe, she could relax, if not for this one day.
