Work Text:
You truly had no idea what possessed you initially, on that sunny day where clouds overhead drifted along carelessly. Rays of sunlight filtered through windows and tree leaves, dancing in and out of view as clouds leisurely strolled across the sky. All you truly remembered was staring at that ice cream parlour across the road, the cones covered in melty sweetness that dripped onto the roads so callously. The sun bore down on you, though it was far from unbearable with the respite gentle winds offered. You were far from any sand or sea, yet still, if you closed your eyes, you could hear waves crashing against those imaginary beaches in your head. You recall, vaguely, as if it were more dream than memory, opening your eyes and turning towards a blank face. The world moved in slow motion in that dreamy moment, fabrics swishing as you turned, and wind stilling in frozen time. You opened your mouth, stupidly, then closed it and turned back to the ice cream parlour.
You remembered little about the exact words, but the effect was all the same. A thoughtless comment about meaningless and impulsive desire released into those gentle winds as you stood next to that blank face. In that faded dream, you could see that blank face turn towards you, asking questions with null emotion, yet dripping with interest. A smile formed, small and quivering out of a childish fear, as you avoided eyes searching for a reason. It wasn't long the two of you stood there, staring together at the ice parlour. Yet all the same, you stared alone as a quiet melancholy wormed its way into your memory of a dream. It, too, held neither meaning nor reason. In that silent acceptance that your imaginary beaches must suffice, that blank face replied. To prying eyes, perhaps, an emotionless observation. To your dreaming eyes, certainly, an offer. If there was a way, then certainly there was a will.
And, as it followed naturally, the dream reformed to another day and another scene. Waves lapped against sand in that dream. He stood next to you, face blank, yet carrying all you could need on a little outing such as this. The clouds overhead were sparser. Rays of sun beamed down in a delicate way, meandering to and fro before gently landing as warmth on your skin. You remembered staring up, with closed eyes, and simply basking in the warmth as you stood. You recalled walking along like that, alongside the blank face that seemed to never change as it ever-shifted under your care-free eyes. You stumbled, and the memory of being caught by an arm around your side lingered in the forefront of your mind's eye. The face still blank, yet gentle laughter simmering deep beneath his eyes. You remember thinking that the both of you covered the spectrum of foolishness. You, unable to move through the world as anything but a butterfly clumsily floating along the breeze, and him, unable to understand the world as anything but a bee aimlessly drifting among the flowers.
The water, you understood, was cool on your skin. He swam beside you as he always did, enjoying himself despite the lack of matching expression. In this dream, you knew, he could have been faceless all the same. As you drifted along the currents, letting the flow of water bring to where ever it saw fit, you gazed at him idly. Yes, perhaps he didn't need a face at all. It served no true purpose for him, and neither did it serve one for you. So long as he could still behave the same, you didn't need to concern yourself with a static face. The feelings he felt shone through wordless actions. Perhaps he didn't even need a voice. You recalled his callous words that carried no understanding of their effect. So unilaterally forthcoming and honest they did anything but inform about his true perspective.
Then, perhaps, his spirit alone was enough for you. His spirit and a body that could house it was all you needed of him. Without a voice or face, you'd enjoy this dream with him no less. The sun continued to gently cradle the two of you in it's warmth. It made you drowsy, so you crawled your way onto the sand. He joined you not long after. You thought, for a moment, that you saw him smile as you drifted to sleep.
You sat up, eager to see it. As you looked around, all there was to greet you was your bedroom, dark with the night. Looking down at that childish ring set you had on your nightstand, you let out a breath you hadn't realized gotten caught. Laying back down, puling blankets back over your body, you tried to recall that dream of yours. That sunny summer day with him.
