sleepy stars

Summary:

Spock insists upon structure, tea, and bedtime. You, however, insist upon snacks, plushies, and affection. Logic, it seems, can be negotiated.

Work Text:

the enterprise hums her slow, steady song—low and alive beneath the floor, through the walls, through the air itself. a heartbeat made of metal and memory, always there. the quarters glow dim, small and safe, a soft pocket of warmth floating in the dark.

spock stands at the doorway, hands clasped behind his back, still and composed, the faintest curve of amusement hiding behind his calm. his gaze falls to the floor, where coloring pages spill like fallen stars. pens scattered. a small plush tribble sitting proudly among them, crowned as captain fuzz.

the little one sits cross-legged in the middle of it all, sleeves pushed up, hair a little wild, eyes bright. science in progress. warp core schematics filled in with glittering ink.

spock kneels, folding down beside the mess with that slow, deliberate care he has for all fragile things. the faint hum of the ship fills the pause.
“an interesting methodological approach,” he observes.
a smile answers him, wide and unbothered. “you like it?”
his head tilts. “it lacks realism, but the creativity is commendable.”
“you talk funny.”
“i speak precisely.”
“funny precisely.”

his eyes soften, the quiet warmth that never quite reaches words. the air between them glows with it, gentle and knowing.

a stomach growls. the spell breaks. spock stands, offers a hand. “nutritional sustenance is due.”

small fingers slip into his without hesitation. the hallway is silent except for the hum of engines and the faint brush of their footsteps.

the kitchen feels like its own little world. lights dimmed, replicator waiting. spock moves with unhurried grace, gathering fruit, cheese cubes, biscuits. the little one perches on a chair, watching.
“snack plate?”
“logical.”

the cocoa nearly overflows—spock’s brows rise, an unspoken warning.
“but the bubbles,” comes the protest, soft and small.
“they are inefficient,” he replies, setting the mug down anyway.
“sticky disaster,” the little one declares, bright as a spark.
“an accurate projection,” spock concedes, and that’s close enough to a laugh.

quiet fills the space again, but it’s the warm kind. ship hum, tea steam, gentle clinks. the sound of belonging.

the question comes out softer than planned.
“do you ever get tired of taking care of me?”
spock looks up. the lights catch the edge of his expression.
“negative.”
pause.
“caregiving,” he says after a moment, “is not an inconvenience. it is a logical expression of affection.”

the little one grins, sleepy and glowing. “so it’s logical to wuv me?”
the tiniest flicker of hesitation—then that low, even voice again.
“highly logical.”

the room breathes. something tender settles.

later, dishes cleared away, the world feels smaller and softer again. the corridor lights dim to amber as they walk back. the plush tribble is waiting on the bed like a promise.

spock tucks the blanket around small shoulders, corners neat, motions steady.
“stay?”
“for a moment.”

his hand rests over a wrist, two fingers tracing slow circles, grounding and certain. the ship’s hum becomes a lullaby again.

a whisper. “thankies for snack time.”
“you are welcome.”

the stars drift outside the window. the engines pulse like a steady heartbeat. the soft breath of sleep rises and falls. spock remains still for a long time, a calm figure keeping watch while the universe hums itself to rest.
