Work Text:

The brain had finally ended its long descent from the sky above Baldur’s Gate with a splash. The survivors, responsible for the downfall of the creature, had held onto whatever they could as they fell into the Sea of Swords. When everything had finally stopped moving, they cautiously began to come to the realization that they were alive. Relieved laughter and whoops of triumph echoed across the expanse of the brain. The adventurers had prevailed in saving Faerun from the evil the Dead Three had released upon it!

Lorieanna, who always went by Anna, was thrilled that all of her friends had made it. The Drow cleric felt it was all thanks to her lady Eilistraee, empowering her to fight against the gods even when she had an Illithid tadpole in her head. Hugging her companions, she shared in their joy at being alive. Still, there was a fear that had planted itself in her heart that she refused to speak aloud. Only there did she let the thought reside: was he still alive?

Astarion, that quick footed vampire, had found a way off the brain by following its stem. Helping each other down, their first steps on land were onto the docks. A crowd had begun to form, wanting to see not only the monstrosity but also the heroes that saved them. Anna’s breath was taken away as she saw the full extent of the destruction up close. Fear gripped her stomach, and it took everything within her not to run off in search of him.

Suddenly, the sound of a familiar voice cut through the din of noises. “Anna!” Her name caught her attention, making her heart flutter. She turned toward that voice, scanning the crowd as she tried to find the one face she wanted to find more than anything in a sea of unfamiliar faces. Then the shout came once more. “Anna!”

Stepping toward the crowd, she finally allowed herself to hope. “Rolan?” Her voice cracked as her search for the tiefling grew more desperate.

Like the moon breaking through on a cloudy night, the crowd finally parted to reveal the only person Anna wanted to see. Rolan was pushing his way towards her, a desperate look on his face. They finally locked eyes across the dock. Even from where she stood, she could see the relief race through his body. “Anna!” he gasped, a smile coming to his face.

Not caring about whatever else was happening, Anna let out a laugh as she began to race towards him. Rolan, seeming to throw away propriety, ran to meet her. They closed the distance separating them within moments, their arms held wide for each other. As soon as she reached him, she threw herself into his waiting arms. Even though he was a wizard and not known for his strength, he lifted her easily off of her feet.

There was no hesitation as their lips found each other easily. Anna’s heart soared as she kissed him for the very first time. All of the sleepless night and tears she had cried over wanting him, over the thought of losing him, dissipated in an instance. She had been prepared to return and beg him for his affection, but there seemed to be no need. The eagerness in his kiss was enough for her to know that he felt the same way about her. She giggled as his sharp teeth scraped against her lip.

Pulling back, Anna stroked his face as Rolan gently placed her back on the ground. “You’re alive,” he gasped, his yellow eyes shining with a light of euphoria she had never seen before.

“I am and so are you,” she said quietly.

Taking her hands into his, Rolan brought them up to his lips to press gentle kisses against her bruised and bloody palms. “I was frightened I would lose you before I would have a chance to tell you just how much you mean to me,” he confessed. His eyes flickered back up to lock with hers. “Before I was able to tell you how much I love you.”

At his words, Anna’s entire world seemed to bloom. Even though the city was burning behind them, she could see nothing else but him. Rolan loved her and that was all that mattered. “Oh, Rolan. I have been waiting to hear those words for so long,” she sighed, placing her hand on his dirt smeared face as she smiled at him. “I love you too.”

Rolan chuckled, a look of relief on his face. “We are both fools to have gone so long with such feelings shared between us. Let us no longer waste any more time then.” With that, he brought her into another kiss.

Anna clung to him, melting into his arms. All of the misery of the day vanished in an instant. Rolan was safe, and she was his. Her wizard. Her tiefling. Her love.
