Chapter 1: Family

Chapter Text

{“Haruki…” Mom's voice calls out for me.

“Don't worry, mom! I'll save you!” I said.

But, the burning beam on her is too heavy for a 8 year old kid.

I cut my arm open trying.

“Haruki. Stop, come here.” She pleaded.

I went to her and as soon I was close she reached out to my hair, gently stroking it.

Next she moved her hand to my arm.

“I guess… we found… out what… your quirk is.” She said, holding my, now healed, arm.

“Haruki, remember… that I will… always… love you.” She said, coughing, and getting weaker.

The flames rise even higher.

The smoke grows thicker.

“Mom?”

She doesn't respond.

}

“Mom!” I shouted, jolting awake with cold sweat dripping down my face.

That nightmare again, It's been 5 years since then.

I get up from my bed, it creeks and wobbles, then I check the time.

3:46am Sun.

That's a whole 6 hours… I'll just go get the heat lamp, like hell I'm going back to sleep.

I walked to my closet, just a few steps in this cramped room, and rummaged through my stuff for the heat lamp.

There it is. Now where's a free outlet?

There! I plugged the lamp in and pointed it at me.

“Ahh… that hits the spot.” I sighed, as my quirk takes the heat turning it to energy since I don't need to heal anything.

My quirk, thermal healing, does exactly what it says on tin. It's the only reason I survived that day.

It's the weekend, I'll sit here until the sun rises.

After a few hours later.

I see the sun peeking through the window. I turned the lamp off and pressed my hand on the bulb taking the last bit of heat from it.

After that, I went out of my room, into the main hallway of this rotten orphanage that I call ‘home’.

‘home’ as in where I live. After all, My Home has burned to the ground.

“Hey, Haruki!” I hear someone call out.

A blonde boy runs towards me.

“Hey Denks.” I greet him, yawning.

Denki, he's been here for 4 years now. And he's one of the kids in this orphanage I can call a friend.

“So… judging by that yawn, you slept today!” He said, grinning while giving me a firm pat on the back.

“Yup, for 6 hours. And you know I sleep on Saturdays.” I confirmed.

“I do. Still can't believe you can go a week with no sleep, dude.” He said, while walking with me to the living room.

“Yeah, but only a week.” someone else spoke.

“I know, Mezo. You don't have to remind me.” I said, waving my hands.

“I hope so. Do you remember that time you stayed awake for a month without telling us?” He countered.

“Oh yeah, that!” Denki exclaimed.

“So what if I was a bit crazy then, my body was perfectly fine!” I replied.

“A bit crazy is an understatement.” Mezo said, chuckling.

“Yeah, please sleep.” Denki chimed in, fake shivering.

“Alrightly then, dads!” I said, light-hearted.

We laughed.

“Haruki, report to my office.” Kaji Akama, the ‘caretaker’ of the orphanage, barks.

“Yes, Akama I’ll-” Before I even finish speaking he hits me over the head.

“Akama-SAN. You ungrateful brat.” He said before walking to his office.

“Sorry, guys. Duty calls.” I sarcastically said.

“Yeah, see you later...” Denki said.

With that I went into my room to grab something then into Akama’s office.

“You know what to do.” He starts.

I handed him the bag, wordlessly.

He takes a look inside.

“A fair haul,” He said as he pulled out a watch that I stole. “ enough for the week.”

“This time I want information.” He said as he slid a folded piece of paper.

I grabbed it.

“Remember our deal.” he said, sinisterly.

{“Why are you asking so many personal questions, dear?” Akama asked, with the fakest smile I seen.

“I want to know what happened to those missing kids!” I snapped.

“What makes you think I did anything about that?” He said, with a frown.

“I don't know, maybe the last time we saw them they were entering this office!” I retorted.

“You want to know the truth?” He said, his frown slowly morphs into a grin.

“You’re right. And you're next if you don't shut up!” He threatened, smiling.

“I don't care what you do to me.” I spit back.

“I see… What about those two kids you've been buddy-buddy with, hmm?” He said, in a sickening relaxed tone.

I clammed up.

“Let's make a deal. From what I see you don't need sleep and you're small, and that could be useful for me. So if you do whatever I say, I won't need to sell your little friends.” His grin now reaches his ears.

}

I looked behind me and saw through a crack in the door Denki and Mezo chatting away.

“Good. You can leave now.” Akama said, shoo-ing me away.

I leave and bolt to my room.

Once in my room I open up the piece of paper.

Inside it is details on a girl with copper hair.

Below the details reads: by Sunday, gather information about this girl's whereabouts, patterns, personality and general demeanor.

Alright, I just have to stalk this Kohaku girl, easy enough.

With that I folded the paper and stuffed it in my pocket and left my room.

What greeted me at the other side was Denki and Mezo with a concerned look on their faces.

“You alright?” Mezo asked.

“Yeah, just Akama being a demon of a bitch.” I replied, not wanting to worry them.

“Yeah I get that. Guess He's an ‘Akuma’ huh.” Denki jokes.

I chuckled.

“If He's a demon then this hell, so let's get out here!” I half-joked.

“To the park!” I ordered, unseriously.

They gave me mock salutes.

We walked to the park, laughing and chatting with each other.
