Work Text:

There was a freshly transferred female student at Asa’s school who was just introduced yesterday, and she was already all over Denji—which, of course, had him swooning like he always did whenever a girl came near him. Asa wasn't sure how to feel about seeing the new girl cling to Denji, the boy she was supposedly crushing on. A part of her did feel slightly bothered—for unclear reasons, however.

Sure, the girl was attractive. She seemed alluring, the way those bangs brushed softly over her face when she laughed and the way her smile gently formed when she paid attention to whatever Denji was yapping about, as Asa silently observed. No wonder she caught the whole school's attention so quickly.

Oh, and on top of that, her voice was soothing, the type that carries you into a blissful sleep—soft and calming, like raindrops tapping against your window at dusk. Goodness, could this girl get any more perfect than this? Denji doesn’t deserve her, Asa selfishly thought.

Reze. That was her name if Asa remembered. It certainly was an eccentric name, all right, but just as she looked, it was beautif–

“Will you shut up already?” Yoru snapped at Asa, rolling back her eyes.

“Excuse me? What is your problem?” replied Asa annoyedly.

"I'm sick of hearing your corny inner thoughts. If you want to know that new girl so badly, then go over there and talk to her. Ask her out on a date, a one-night stand, or whatever. Spare me the misery and get this over with."

Asa was baffled. How did Yoru even come to that conclusion? She must be stupid.

"And now you're surprised and think I'm stupid," Yoru sighed. "Don't you dare take me for an idiot ever again. Even if we didn't share the same brain, I can clearly tell from a mile away that it's her whom you like. Hell, even a blind toddler could,” Yoru continued to scoff. How dare Asa make her feel the slightest affection toward a human being. What a waste of time and energy, she thought.

Now, that was just insulting. "You're just spouting some bullshit, as always,” said Asa.

“Don’t forget our real objective, Asa. We don’t have time for this ‘love’ crap you humans experience.”

"Yeah, yeah. To fight Chainsaw Man. As if I didn't hear it a million times a day," Asa audibly mumbled while walking past Reze, who had been left alone by Denji for a while because he needed to go to the toilet.

Reze just happened to hear what Asa mumbled about fighting Chainsaw Man, and immediately caught all her attention. She silently watched and observed Asa as she walked to her class.

“What’s up, Reze? Why are you staring at Asa?” Denji suddenly showed up from behind, startling Reze.

Reze quickly composed herself and made up an excuse on the spot. “Nothing. I just find her cute, that’s all,” she lied. Though, it wasn’t entirely a lie. Asa was pretty darn cute, after all.

"Who? That Asa? Nah, I'm way cuter!" Denji boasted, confidently pointing at himself and puffing out his chest.

“Fufu, you sure are, Denji,” Reze said, playing along and lightly squeezing his arm, as she took another glance of Asa over her shoulder.

As Asa walked home after school, she winded up in the back alley of a coffee shop. It wasn’t her usual route, but she just thought a change of scenery might be nice.

“Why did you think walking through a suspicious alley can make you feel better mentally?” said Yoru, slightly concerned.

"It's to avoid things becoming mundane, therefore reducing stress. Stop complaining."

“Your way of thinking is bizarre. One of these days, you will probably get kidnapped or killed.”

“You wouldn’t understand because you’re a devil–”

“Bang!”

A random girl suddenly appeared before Asa, making her jump. But Before Asa could process her thoughts, she froze again upon seeing who the annoying random stranger was. ‘Oh, crap’ was the first thought that entered Asa's mind when she saw her.

"Ahaha! I'm sorry for surprising you like that. I think I was just excited to see a schoolmate outside of school," the girl continued, pointing at Asa's uniform and then at hers, which was covered by a beige-colored apron.

Both Asa and Yoru just stood there and stared at Reze in disbelief for a few seconds. "Wow, there's someone more bizarre than you, Asa," said the devil.

"Yeah... You're the new girl, I know," said Asa, standing awkwardly in front of Reze while still holding her chest after the jump scare. Everything spiraled around Asa in such a short time, she swore.

Reze nodded in response. “Though, I have never seen you around at school,” she wondered.

"Well, yes, because she is a loser," was what Yoru muttered, that made Asa subconsciously yell, 'Shut up' out of the blue at the air, making her seem crazy because Reze obviously couldn’t see another living being that was currently standing next to Asa.

“I’m sorry. That was rude of me to say that,” Reze quickly realized, her gaze seeming to be mellowed.

“No, no! I wasn’t talking to you. I was… talking to… my inner thoughts…”

Fuck. At that exact moment, Asa wanted nothing more than to dig a 6-foot hole and bury herself alive. Her social life was over already, not that there had been any of it before.

Reze then laughed freely after hearing Asa's answer, lightly tapping Asa’s shoulder. “You are such an interesting woman! So, it’s like you have a double personality. Hey, hey, what’s your name?”

Well... Reze wasn't entirely wrong. Asa did have a dual personality—sort of. But Asa couldn't exactly reveal to Reze that she shared her body with a devil. The war devil, no less. Yeah, Reze would definitely think she was out of her mind for real. One more absurd word from her, and there went any ounce of hope she had of befriending Reze.

“My name is Asa. Asa Mitaka.”

“I’m Reze. Nice to meet you, Asa,” said Reze, smiling softly.

Ugh, that damn smile. It radiated so much warmth that it successfully struck through Asa's heart. A warm rain of affection washed over her, and that was when it finally clicked that she had fallen for this girl. For the first time, she could truly understand Denji.

Couldn't stand the slow burn any longer, as the sudden, aggressive wave of affection was driving her insane, Yoru took over Asa's body and handled it her own way. "Hey, let's make out right now," she said sternly, moving her face closer to Reze's, leaving only a few inches of space between their lips.

The quick shift in personality was surely a surprise to Reze until she noticed the scar across Asa's face that seemed to appear out of nowhere. Reze was a clever girl and began to analyze the few possibilities as to why.

There was that one specific possibility she had been wondering this entire time. The one that she was most certain of. She let out a cunning smile afterward and softly cupped Asa’s (Yoru’s) cheeks. “I was right. You really are interesting, Asa Mitaka. The most interesting girl I’ve met, even,” she said before she pressed her lips to Asa's, and took all the lead.

After a few minutes of a passionate make-out session, Reze pulled her face away from Asa's, longingly stared into the other girl's eyes, who currently seemed to be on cloud nine. As predicted, the scar had disappeared. Reze then smirked, and simply said,

“I believe we will get along just fine.”
