At a hospital
Ken: (settling into a chair) "Life in Japan feels... different from the life I used to live."
Little girl on a patient bed: (tilting her head curiously) "And why is that?"
Ken: (with a small smile) "It feels better... and kind of has a different spark than where I used to live."
Little girl: "Well, it's been 3 months since you arrived. It'll definitely feel a little weird for you."
Ken: "I also heard 2018—the year you were born—had a lot of weird things happening here."
Little girl: (thinking hard) "I don't really recall what happened, but I was born on Halloween October, 2018, so I was too young to know anything."
Ken: "But it's definitely something you'll be told about when you grow up."
Little girl: "Maybe... I heard there was a war between those things they call curses and the super-powered people we see on TV."
Ken: "You mean the strongest sorcerers?"
Little girl: (excitedly) "Yeah, those! Yuta Okkotsu, Yuji Itadori... those guys! They're really cool and boom boom!"
Ken: (chuckling) "They're pretty famous in Japan, but barely anyone knows much about them."
Little girl: "Yeah, since 2020, they've rarely been seen. But I remember seeing a brown-haired woman once who wore their uniform. I think her name was Nobara Kugisaki."
Ken: (pausing) "Nobara? I feel like I've heard that name before..."
Little girl: "You definitely saw her on TV or something."
Nurse: (entering the room) "Ken-san! Your visiting time is up for today."
Little girl: (pouting) "Nooo, wait! You didn't tell me what Egypt was like!"
Ken: (pats her head gently) "Don't worry, I'll tell you about it later. But you have to listen to the doctors and nurses here and be a good girl, okay?"
Nurse: (softly) "I'm sorry, Shiwa-chan. Ken-san will come again tomorrow. Time to say goodbye."
Ken: (waving) "Goodbye, you two. I'll see you tomorrow."
Ken walks out of the room. Scene changes to him walking through the hallway.
Receptionist: (suspicious, patient safety is top priority after all) "I heard you came to Japan just a few months ago. Why do you keep visiting her? You have no relation to her."
Ken: (sighs heavily) "I had a Japanese friend. We... talked... a while ago... He told me his sister was very sick... and I kinda promised him that I'd take care of her if anything ever happened to him. After two years of friendship... he died."
Receptionist: (expression softening) "I'm very sorry to hear that."
Ken: "I promised myself that when I was able to come to Japan, I'd take care of his little sister. Fortunately, her family was wealthy enough to keep her here in the hospital for a while after they died. But money is finite. And it isn't enough to replace her brother. So I came here... to become her new brother."
Receptionist: (apologetically) "I'm truly sorry. I didn't mean to bother you."
Ken: "No, I should be thanking you for letting me be with her. Other hospitals might not have even let me visit."
Receptionist: "Honestly, I wouldn't have asked if I knew what was going on."
Ken: "It's okay, really."
Receptionist: (helpfully) "If you want, I can help get you assigned as an official family visitor. That way, you'll have more time with her."
Ken: (gratefully) "Really? That would mean a lot. Thanks."
Receptionist: (hands him a card) "Just write your name and phone number here. I'll show it to someone who can help."
Ken: (writes his name and number) "Thanks for your help. Have a nice day."
On the way to school
Ken starts walking as he sees the sunrise.
A student: (jogging up) "Yo! Ken! We can walk to school together."
Ken: "Yeah, sure. Let's go quickly. I guess we're both late, huh?"
Mehura Utsaku: (smirking confidently) "Mehura Utsaku is not small enough to get humbled by a teacher."
Ken: (rolling his eyes) "Yeah right, let's just go this way."
Mehura: "Alright."
At the school gate
Teacher: (arms crossed) "Why were you both late?"
Ken: "Sorry, had to go to the hospital... for a friend."
Mehura: (proudly) "And I'm too cool to go early!"
Teacher: (sighs) "Either way, it doesn't matter. Class hasn't started yet."
Mehura: (confused) "Huh? Why not?"
Teacher: "They're doing some safety checks. Some students reported hearing noises, and the staff called in some sorcerers."
Mehura: (eyes lighting up) "Wait, wha—!? Sorcerers!? I gotta go get a picture!"
Teacher: (sternly) "Don't. We don't want to interrupt their work. Either way, it doesn't seem dangerous. No one was harmed. I think people are just anxious."
Ken: "Hmm... I don't care. How long do we have to wait before class starts?"
Teacher: "I don't know. You can hang around with the other students until they're done."
Mehura: (slouching) "I guess we gotta boringly wait here."
Ken: "I don't mind it. You have something to do?"
Mehura: "I don't know, I guess I'll just follow you wandering around."
They walk a bit and find a shrine, an old schooling shrine, leftover from the older school.
Mehura: (pointing) "Hey, what about we go inside?"
Ken: (hesitant) "I don't think it's a good idea. That's probably where the curse is, if anything. I think we should tell the sorcerers."
Mehura: (laughing) "You're such a scaredy bird!" (jumps into the shrine)
Ken: (reaching out) "Wait!"
Mehura: "Too late!"
Ken: (tries to go after him)
The door to the shrine closes on its own.
Ken: (rattling the door) "What was... that? ...I can barely hear a thing from inside. Guess I'll go report it to the sorcere—"
A brief flashback.
Shiwa: "If it only waited a second. We could've saved Tenka. Feels hard to think that if they were a bit quicker, maybe he would've been alive now."
Ken (now): (jaw clenching) "Man... fuck, I gotta go in. Don't want any more promises to interrupt me."
Ken kicks the door to the shrine. It's a domain.
Ken: (looking around, disgusted) "What's it with all that gooey stuff?"
He continues walking for a bit, and he finds Mehura in a slime-like substance.
Ken: (panicking) "Mehura! What happened?!"
Ken realizes he needs to escape before the curse comes. He takes Mehura on his back and tries to leave. Once he sees the light leading out of the domain, he finds the curse in front of him. He quickly throws Mehura outside and tries to tank the hits from the curse.
Scene change
A newbie sorcerer is inside the school building.
Sorcerer: (looking around) "Itadori-san, I really don't think there are any curses here." (Looks out the window—eyes widen) "Itadori-san! That shrine outside the building... I'm feeling something from it."
Yuji: (first time appearing, alert) "Then that's definitely where the curse is!"
Inside the shrine
Cursed Spirit: (in cursed nonsense) "Love... meeee..."
It grabs Ken by his shoulders, about to kill him.
Ken: (struggling) "FUCK!"
The curse is about to consume Ken. Suddenly, Yuji breaks through the roof and kicks the curse.
Yuji: (grinning) "Hahaha! Found ya!" (notices Ken in the curse's grasp) "Oh shoot—"
The cursed spirit holds Ken hostage.
Yuji: (grimacing) "Shit!"
Ken: (screaming) "Ahhh! AHH!" (The curse stretches Ken's body, about to rip him in half)
Ken (to himself): "So here it is, death... but, why do I feel like I am not wanting to let it tear me apart? I feel like... I want not to die. I faced death a lot of times, none of them mattered to me. Is this what determination is like? But if that's determination, what am I determined for? Is it for finishing the things I have to do? I think that's what it is. Well... no. I shouldn't die."
Yuji: (fills his legs with cursed energy to quickly grab Ken) "Don't—" (stops; he senses something)
A massive surge of cursed energy bursts from Ken, forcing the curse to throw him away.
Yuji quickly catches Ken before he hits the ground.
Yuji: "Kugisaki!" (throws Ken toward the hole he made in the roof)
Nobara appears and catches Ken.
Yuji then punches the curse and exorcises it.
Yuji runs over to Nobara and Ken.
Yuji: (concerned) "Is he okay?"
Nobara: (checking him over) "Nothing too dangerous. Just some cuts and bleeding, but... he's unconscious."
Yuji: (seriously) "He used cursed energy..."
Nobara looks at him, surprised.
Yuji: "The curse was using him as a hostage to keep me from attacking. But he used cursed energy to break free—he gave me the opening I needed to finish it. He needs to be taken to Jujutsu High. That curse was at least semi-first grade. That's pretty common in places like schools or creepy shrines."
Nobara nods.
Nobara: "Then let's go."
Five hours later—Tokyo Jujutsu High medical room
Ken wakes up in Shoko's room, lying in a bed.
Yuji: (leaning forward) "Oh! You're awake."
Ken: (groggy) "Wha—what happened?"
Yuji: (sitting back) "A lot, my friend... Let's ask you a few questions to figure out what the heck we're going to do with you."
Yuji: "First off, I heard your name is Ken Umaru, am I right?"
Ken: (shrugging) "I mean, obviously, if that's in papers."
Yuji: "Well, Ken, do you want to become a sorcerer?"
Last cue: Ken's eyes.
Chapter ends.
