Summary: 15 years after promising to be there for each other, Beverly and Deanna come together to celebrate their new arrivals.
Troi waits for Beverly in the Titan transport room. She will be here in a few days, and as promised Beverly said she would be there for her. She has scheduled fetal transport in two days. Due to her history with Ian 15 years ago as a precaution, Dr. Tarlov wanted to deliver in this manner. Beverly herself had another four months to go before she delivered her and Picard's son Jack, Deanna already put plans in for leave.
Deanna smiles as her arms extend as Beverly emerges from the transporter padd. “Hello Deanna, you look beautiful.” Beverly says as she gives Deanna a hug. “I look big.” Deanna replies as she takes her hand “No, you look pregnant and beautiful.” The woman pulled apart from their hug. “You, Beverly, look amazing. If I did not know anything, I would not think you were pregnant at all.” “Just give it a few more months or so, I will pop right out.” Both women giggle as they exit their room, thanking the transparent chief for a very well executed transport.
“So, Diana, how are you doing? Really?” “Ohh, you know, ready to meet this little boy. I feel like I have been pregnant forever. I understand that ten-fold. By the time I reached my third trimester with Wesley, I thought he would never come out. Beverly replies, “When I was pregnant with Ian it came and went faster than I could experience a real pregnancy.” “Even though this one was good, it had its moments. I was either starving or so nauseous. I could not eat my entire first trimester. I will be so happy, so happy when it is over.”
When I reached the second trimester, I was a little exhausted or not tired at all and this baby slept. I would lay awake and put my hands on my belly and he was all over the place so even if I wished hard enough, he would not let me sleep.” “And now? “Beverly asked. As they take a seat in Deanna’s quarters, “Now I am good. He does not move as much at night now. Usually when I am in with a patient or a delegate, he is practically jumping out of there. Plus he is is just running out of room and trying to kick his way out.” “OH, yes, I remember that. You will miss it when he's finally here, just two more days and you will get to meet him. Beverly answers with a smile.
“Enough about me, how are you doing?” “I'm not as young as I used to be. It's been over 30 years since I was pregnant. So, when I found out I was, I was in shock to say the least. I had to run the test over again. So, getting pregnant again after all these years was unexpected.” Beverly replied. “It was not planned at all. I was honestly thinking I was in menopause. I had not had my period in a few months, so naturally I was not. We were being careful only to find out that I had no a cycle because I was already pregnant.”
So, you did not have any other symptoms at all? “ “No. Then when I got back to Enterprise after Shore leave, I was just getting screened because it had been two months and the nurse said I was pregnant. I was very shocked. I grabbed the tricorder right out of her hand scanned myself again I was pregnant.” “So, did it happen while you were on leave?” Deanna asked. “Yes, and I knew the exact date our last night on Casperia prime, it was the best sex I ever had with anyone. Including Jean-Luc. I mean, we have been intimate before, but this time, man, it was good. Then he was called away he had to return to the ship. I was so terrible at him. But you know, John Luke. He runs back as soon as he's called. I stayed a few more weeks and returned here myself.”
“How long after did you tell Jean-Luc you were pregnant?” “After I got over the shock, I tried three times, but something kept getting in the way. After the phaser incident. I told him he was as shocked as I was.” “But he was fine with it, obviously you are married now.” He was though he made it clear he was not marrying me because of the baby. Now, here I am four months pregnant with the captain's baby.” Deanna and Beverly chuckle. “Well, aren't we a pair Beverly?” “We are, If you asked me if I would be standing here pregnant at your wedding, I would have said absolutely not.”
“How has your pregnancy been so far?” “Good actually as I said earlier, I did not suspect I was pregnant at all, but about 3 weeks later the morning sickness kicked in, but not as bad as with Wesley. But there, I have it under control now with a hypospray of an anti-emetic.” “OH, thank goodness. I know what that feels like. I am so glad you are doing well. Will was a little nutty; with every sound I made—everything—he asked if I was OK.” “Would you like to eat dinner?” “Always, how about you?” “I could eat.” “Your grandmother's vegetable soup, then?” “Always could eat some of that. It will be good for you too, and a side of chocolate, naturally.” Beverly nods, going to the replicator and pushing a few buttons. A few seconds later, their dinner arrives, and Deanna carries it over to the table, quickly joined by Beverly.
So, are you nervous about your procedure in two days?” “No, Deanna answerAs much as I wanted a natural birth and delivery, I understand why Doctor Tarlov decided it was best. We don't know the exact radiation outside of Eichner that I was exposed to. This residual radiation could cause complications from what I read from Doctor Pulaski's notes. The baby is OK, it doesn't have any genetic abnormalities.” “So why did you choose the fetal transport?” Beverly asked “my body has never gone through real birth, and I am a planner. I don't want to be in labor for days that may cause damage to me and the baby and to be honest I don't want to go into labor and have weeks to recover, and Will wants to be there. I could induce but that too could be days. Fetal transport would make an easy recovery period, right? ““Well, either way, I'm here for your new baby and you, because I promised this. You want help? Troi nods in agreement. I'll take you to your quarters. It's been a long trip. I'm sure you're tired. I'm not as young as I used to be and this surprise pregnancy is taking a toll on my sleep habits. Come, Beverly, we could have breakfast tomorrow. I look forward to it.
Two days later, Deanna is finally on the bed, prepped for her delivery. On her left is William, on her right, Beverly. Riker has Troi’s hand as Beverly has her hand resting on her shoulder. “Are you ready for this? “Will ask with a smile. “As I'll ever be. Beverly, thank you for being here with me “ “Anytime, I made a promise to you 15 years ago, and I keep all my promises, Now, enough about me.” Doctor Tarlov was ready to perform a fetal transport. Within a few minutes, a beautiful baby cries out as it enters the world.
Doctor Tarlov, who retrieves the baby from the incubator, runs his tracker over the baby and cleans him off. Will has a smile larger than the room itself. “Welcome to the world, young captain.” Will says as he's given his son. “He's so beautiful, Deanna, just look at him.” Will lowers his son to Deanna's eye level and releases a strap so that she could touch her son. He looks like you, not sure where my DNA is in here.” Deanna laughs lightly. “He has your hair, Deanna replies, and you have great hair.
“How big is he, Doctor?” Beverly asks, 6 lbs. 3oz, 20 inches long. He's in perfect health and so are you, Deanna, Dr. Tarlov replies. If his scans remain steady, you will be able to take him home for dinner. Thank you, doctor, says Deanna; he nods his head as he finishes up. That's a delivery. Deanna’s post delivery scans and his newborn screening is clean.
Now, Deanna in a few days your milk will come in. Until then, still nurse him and we can supplement with formula right now. Right now, your colostrum should be more than enough for him. I highly recommend pumping in between feeds. It will help your milk come in faster, and it'll have all the antibodies to protect him until he's old enough to be vaccinated. Thank you, Beverly, I didn't really have the option to nurse Ian. I'm glad I got a chance too with him as if on cue, Thad cries out a small cry in Will’s arm he has his father’s appetite, Will says as he hands him off to be fed.
