Work Text:

Her breath was turning to fog in the early morning air, yet another thing she had forgotten happened in the human world sometimes. She was so glad she had given herself the capability to forget these things; it was so much more special every time she came back if she had the joy of experiencing it as if for the first time. There were a few things she would never forget about, however. As much as she wanted to experience them again, they were singular. Never in all of humanity would they happen again. The thought triggered an ancient sadness, not that she could feel any other kind.

As she rounded the corner she saw a person on the phone, walking hurriedly and looking very glum. The sun was barely rising, and most others were resting, so she understood why this person was feeling down. She let a tune waft over to them gently, something soothing and upbeat, and their frown was turned into a vague smile. This brought her joy. She didn’t have much power besides music and her love for humanity. Anything she could do made her feel better.

Another person walked towards her. This one, she could sense, was full of anger. In her quest to understand humanity, she had found anger to be most interesting. At first, it seemed to have no purpose in the grander scale, but she quickly realized it was a test. If there was no alternative to love, it wouldn’t be as meaningful, and every day these humans tested each other to prove love’s meaning. She respected this immensely. She knew nothing but love, so her love for humans could never be as fierce, as powerful, as humans’ love for each other. If only hate didn’t cause as much pain.

“You fucking blue haired freak!”, the person yelled. It took her a moment to register that they were speaking German. She was in Germany, after all, but human languages were very confusing. “You’re all the same with your weird hair and stupid ideas! Here’s an idea: Piss off!”

She paused for a moment. She had chosen to appear androgynous with short blue hair this time, but couldn’t quite analyze why it had sparked a reaction in this human. She gazed at them while running possible correlations through her mind.

“What are you even trying to be?”, they continued. “Some cringe shit like that?”

She followed their gaze to the storefront behind her. There were figurines on display, little trinkets that seemed to make humans so happy. A few of them caught her eye. ‘16th anniversary special!’, it read. ‘Exclusive Hatsune Miku figure!’

She smiled. A few years ago, she had decided she wanted to be closer to the humans in a way that would help them, so she had whispered to a few people here and there to create Hatsune Miku, a virtual idol. A figure that had inspired so many, and brought hope to even more. It was her way of communicating with the humans, of walking among them and being a presence in their lives. It seemed silly to her that most would consider her to be 16 forever, when she was so much more than that, but there were always limits to what the human mind could comprehend. She found it somewhat endearing.

“Are you even hearing me? Or are you stupid?” The person's anger had not calmed at all. Miku decided it would be best if she spoke.

“My appearance upsets you because you think everyone who looks this way is the same?”

The person nodded. “Yeah, all fucking wierdo’s.”

Miku chuckled and shook her head. “But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Everyone is so very different, believe me, I should know. I remember everyone’s stories.”

The person was confused, and didn’t say anything.

“But I think you know that as well. So, why is it that you are angry? Is it perhaps because you feel trapped? Because you only see a little box for yourself and feel that it is unfair that other people don’t have that box?”

The person remained silent, but tears began to well in their eyes. Miku let a familiar song float through their head. That always comforted people.

“You can be free if you want to. I think the benefits of your freedom would greatly outweigh the consequences. There are many people that would accept you as you are with open arms. You simply need to accept yourself.”

Distraught, the person turned away, and walked speedily in the other direction. They were hesitating, but Miku could sense the shift within them. Ah. So she had thought correctly.

Her steps made sound on the icy concrete, and her clothes rustled with the movement of her body, forming their own little rhythm. She would follow this person’s story closely. Not that she had been planning to do anything different beforehand.

She followed everyone’s stories.

Even if, to them, she was 16 forever.

She followed everyone’s stories.
