"Ever heard of not looking at someone’s phone?" she asked, voice dripping with snark. What in the world was his problem? "Then again, of course you haven’t." This was Noli they were talking about, after all.

Noli groaned dramatically and sauntered over to sit on their desk without asking, an act so incredibly rude that 1x1x1x1 wondered if he even understood the concept of boundaries.

"¥0ū tw0 h@v3 re@ch3d [THE LEVEL OF CORNINESS] wh€re y0u tēxt fl!rt!ngl¥ d3spite beīng a f€w m3tērs away [FROM] 3āch 0th3r."

They fake-gagged, continuing to rant about how “cringe” they were. 1x1x1x1 barely heard any of it. Their focus had drifted across the room, toward John Doe, who leaned casually against the window while chatting with Guest 666. John still had his phone in his hand. Was he waiting for their reply? They didn’t want to take their phone out again, not while Noli was still nearby and nosy.

John lifted his head, probably in response to something Guest 666 said and then his gaze met theirs. He smiled, a soft, effortlessly warm expression that hit her harder than it should have. She felt heat rush to her face and quickly looked away, pretending to pay attention to nothing in particular.

"Oh my god, can you shut up?"

Azure’s voice cut through the noise. His desk was right beside hers; his head had been resting on his arms, but he raised it slightly when it became clear Noli intended to continue talking forever. 1x1x1x1 exhaled, wishing the teacher would arrive already.

Noli smirked. Getting under people’s skin was practically his specialty.

"@ww, āre [YOU TIRED], Āzūrē?" he mocked, crossing one leg over the other in a way that made 1x think of a very mean word she refused to say out loud.

Azure straightened up, pressing his back against the chair properly and adjusting his posture. He removed his hat to run a hand through his dark hair, looking exhausted. 1x1x1x1 didn’t want Noli bothering Azure. Everyone knew how down he’d been since the breakup before summer.

1x1x1x1 felt bad for their brother. He’d been deeply depressed the entire break, and returning to school had only made things worse. He had even stopped hiding his large, intimidating tentacles; letting them hang free was something he never did before. It was strange, unsettling even to see Azure like this. They supposed Two Time had meant far more to him than anyone realized.

Finally, the door swung open. Mr. Luke stepped inside with a dread-soaked expression, the kind he wore every time he had to face their class. 1x1x1x1 couldn’t blame him; this group wasn’t exactly a teacher’s dream. In fact, most teachers outright hated them.

Still, at least Mr. Luke’s arrival made Noli slide off their desk and slink back to his own.

And so, class began.

And with it, 1x1x1x1 finally had the quiet moment they needed to space out and just… think.

For Chance and Elliot, strolling around was the perfect excuse to wake their bodies and chase away the persistent chill.

Chance spoke animatedly, recounting the newest piece of gossip with all the enthusiasm of someone narrating a grand legend. According to what they’d heard, some girl had rejected a guy in a humiliating fashion, something about her announcing her refusal in front of half the cafeteria.

Chance described every exaggerated detail with dramatic flair. Yet in the middle of his rambling, his lively explanation faltered. They finally noticed that Elliot wasn’t reacting at all.

Chance frowned and tilted their head toward him. Elliot seemed entirely disconnected from the conversation. His eyebrows were drawn together, his lips pressed tightly, and his eyes flickered with an unusually intense focus. It looked as if he were trying to solve a secret equation written somewhere in the air.

Chance studied him for a moment, wondering what could’ve stolen his attention so completely. Then a mischievous spark lit up in their mind. If Elliot was that distracted, the opportunity was simply too good to ignore.

Before he could realize what was happening, Chance nudged him sharply with their elbow. The playful shove knocked Elliot off balance. He stumbled forward with a startled sound and nearly toppled, only saving himself by grabbing at the nearest supportive surface.

"What was that for?!" he exclaimed, glaring indignantly. Although his tone was offended, the expression on his face made him look more startled than genuinely angry.

Chance immediately bit back a wave of laughter, barely containing it before it spilled out. "Maybe pay attention to where you’re going. Who are you daydreaming about, Dreamboy?"

Elliot stuck out his tongue, refusing to let the tease go unanswered. He gave Chance a light push in return. Chance gasped with theatrical drama, a hand flying to their chest, before the playful smirk returned to their lips.

It didn’t take long for their gentle nudges to transform into a childish battle of shoves. The two of them laughed breathlessly, each trying to knock the other off balance while maintaining their own footing. They became so absorbed in their miniature war that neither noticed the direction their pushing had taken them.

Chance gave one more shove. Elliot staggered backward and collided with someone.

"Ack!-" Elliot sputtered, caught at the last possible moment by Chance. They both steadied themselves before Elliot turned around to apologize to whoever he had bumped into. The words died on his tongue as soon as he saw the person standing there.

"S… sorry, Mafioso," Chance said quickly when Elliot couldn’t speak. However, it wasn’t the tall student himself who left them stunned. It was the person beside him. Chance blinked, their confusion obvious. "Wait, iTrapped?"

Standing next to Mafioso was another tall boy, his long blond hair falling in smooth layers around his shoulders and his cold gaze sharp enough to slice through steel. itrapped, infamous for his icy demeanor and razor-sharp annoyance toward nearly everyone, especially Mafioso, stood there as if their presence together were the most natural thing in the world.

"What are you two doing together?" Chance asked, unable to hide their bewilderment. It made absolutely no sense. Why was Chance’s best friend standing beside the very boy Chance had been hopelessly crushing on for months? His mind raced as they tried to remember whether Itrapped had ever expressed anything but irritation toward Mafioso. The answer was a definitive no.

Mafioso’s expression shifted, as if he himself hadn’t expected the situation to unfold like this. "We were just talking about something." His vague response only heightened Chance’s confusion, and he opened his mouth to press further.

Before he could say anything, Itrapped interjected. "We were finished anyway. I’m going to class." His flat tone left no room for interpretation. He clearly wanted to escape the uncomfortable scene before it could deepen. Without waiting for permission, he turned and strode swiftly toward the opposite end of the hallway.

Chance didn’t call after him. They fully intended to interrogate Itrapped later, once he had nowhere to run. For now, Elliot stood awkwardly beside them. He glanced between Chance and Mafioso in rising discomfort before deciding it was safer to retreat as well.

"I was actually supposed to meet Guest, so… I should go," he mumbled. He took several quick steps backward, then spun around and practically speed-walked out of sight. Chance huffed in annoyance. How dare Elliot abandon them like that, especially in front of the very person Chance had been pining over for months?

The silence that followed felt thick and awkward, hovering between them like fog. Mafioso cleared his throat in an attempt to break it.

"I, uh… my boys- I mean, my friends made plans to hang out today without me." He rubbed the back of his neck as he spoke, appearing uncharacteristically hesitant. "So maybe we could stay together for a little while, if you want. Only if you’re alright with that."

Chance nearly ascended into the clouds. Mafioso. Wanting to stay with them. Voluntarily. How could they even dream of refusing such an offer?

"Yeah, 'course I’m alright with that. There’s still plenty of time before class begins. Do you want to walk around for a bit and talk?"

Mafioso smiled, an actual smile instead of that default threatening one. A warm expression that softened his features in a way that nearly melted Chance where they stood.

"Okay," he replied.

And just like that, Chance’s morning became infinitely brighter than the sun rising over the school roofs.

Usually, Chance preferred noise. They enjoyed talking and listening to others, and if it was too quiet, they invaded the silence with their own voice.

Now, however, the silence was comforting.

He sat on a bench, a small Bloxy Cola can in hand. Mafioso sat beside him, quietly snacking on a biscuit. Both of them had already finished their lunches, they had gone to the gardens to eat.

Despite it being the new and much larger garden of the school, not many students came here. Honestly, Chance preferred the old one. It had been much smaller and far more comforting. But it wasn’t like he minded this one. It was peaceful, especially when no one else was around.

Mafioso was the sort of person Chance didn’t need to talk endlessly with. Of course, Chance still talked to him about unimportant topics often, but sometimes they could simply sit in silence. The two of them would just enjoy each other’s company.

It was… nice. Chance knew they could never really have Mafioso, not in the way he wanted, so moments like this were precious.

But they were also easily distracted. They fished out their phone and scrolled for a while before finding a funny video, which they immediately shoved into Mafioso’s face. The latter looked confused and raised a brow.

“Look!” Chance said, no further explanation needed. Mafioso leaned back a little to give them both room and watched the video. His small smile remained.

It was a short clip of two bunnies rolling around and playing with each other. It was genuinely adorable. Chance’s face brightened when Mafioso’s smile grew wider.

“Cute,” he said. Chance couldn’t agree more.

“I know, right?” They turned their phone back toward themselves to watch the bunnies again, hearting the video and saving it for later. “How these little things can do the simplest stuff and still look so cute is beyond me.” They laughed and leaned back against the bench.

Mafioso hummed, and while Chance was distracted by their phone, his gaze lingered on them instead. Small things, doing nothing, yet still looking cute. It sounded very familiar. He resisted a soft laugh and shook his head

After a few minutes of doom scrolling and showing a handful of funny videos to Mafioso, Chance finally finished his Bloxy Cola. He crushed the can in his hands and stood to throw it in the trash. Or, well, he was going to before he noticed two figures he recognized.

His classmate, Veeronica, leaned casually against a tree, her skateboard tucked under her arm. Standing next to her was the really freakishly tall student Chance saw everywhere. Oh, what was his name again… uh…

Slenderman. Right.

Normally, Chance didn’t pry into other people’s business (a lie, because he absolutely did), but the way the two were standing so close was setting something off inside him. Whispering to each other, laughing, giggling? Something was definitely happening.

“What’s wrong?” Mafioso asked, noticing how long Chance had been staring. Chance shushed him before grabbing his arm and dragging him across the garden.

“Veeronica!”

The TV-head girl stiffened, then turned around with a startled expression. Chance?? Chance was here?? How much had he heard? Or seen? Or—

“Hey,” she replied, her eyes flicking to Mafioso beside him. She smirked, shooting Chance a knowing look. Chance flushed and shook his head quickly. “Hi. Hello. What are you two doing?” he asked, releasing Mafioso’s arm before Veeronica could make a comment about that too. He’d had enough teasing already.

“Uhm, me and Slenderman were about to go to the café on the street over, since there’s still a lot of time until class,” she explained. Before the silence could stretch too awkwardly, she added, “Want to come with?”

Veeronica mentally slapped herself in the face. Several times. Slenderman tilted his head, clearly not expecting their little date hangout, whatever it technically was—to suddenly include extra people. Especially not at such short notice.

Chance blinked. “Uh…” He looked at Mafioso, who simply shrugged. “Sure, why not.”

So that was the main reason Chance was now sitting in a café with cats wandering absolutely everywhere. What Veeronica failed to mention was that the café they were going to wasn’t just any café. It housed cats. A lot of cats. In fact, it was an actual cat café. Chance had to admit, the cat-themed décor was charming and the cartoonish cat bartender painted on the menu was adorable… until the real cat bartender walked in and stole the show entirely.

A small yellow cat had climbed onto Chance’s lap, curling into a warm little ball. He purred loudly while nuzzling against Chance’s hand, demanding pets with all the determination of a creature who knew he was irresistible. Chance would’ve been a complete liar if he said it didn’t affect him at all. It absolutely did. His heart was dangerously close to melting into a puddle on the floor.

Veeronica, meanwhile, was fully engrossed in a conversation with Slenderman about something else cat-related, probably the fourth topic they’d jumped to by now.

“Is there something…?” Chance asked quietly when he noticed Mafioso staring at him. His hand slowed in its petting for a moment, although the clingy kitten continued pressing close as if refusing to let him stop.

Mafioso’s smile stayed on his face. “Not at all.”

Though Chance wasn’t blind. He could see the faint strain pulling at the edges of that smile. Huh. He wondered what that was about.

“Actually, I need to go to the restroom.” Mafioso stood up abruptly, almost knocking the table. Slenderman reached out to stop him.

“Do you know where it is?” he asked, and Mafioso stiffened like someone had asked him to solve quantum physics on the spot.

A moment later, the two of them stepped outside together. The café didn’t have its own restroom, so they had to use another one farther down the street.

When Chance finally spotted them out the window, disappearing around the corner, he turned toward Veeronica with a grin already forming.

“So… Slenderman, huh?” he teased, leaning closer with an exaggerated smirk.

Veeronica shot him a glare sharp enough to cut glass. “You shush.” She looked like she was strongly considering hitting him, but she didn’t want to accidentally hurt the cute bunny currently curled on his arm. Lucky for him.

Chance chuckled, pleased with himself. Until Veeronica raised a brow.

“What about you and Mafioso? Just sitting next to each other… smiling?” she asked, her tone dripping with implication.

Chance felt his cheeks heat instantly, a deep flush rising. He clapped his hands together and shushed her aggressively. “Shhhhhh! It’s only fun when I do it!”

Veeronica snorted. “Hypocrite.”

Chance pretended not to hear her while burying his face in the cat on his lap, who thankfully didn’t judge him at all
