Work Text:
I was back at my house after the Halloween party. I feel like a dick for pushing Micheal away, but the squip was saying it was “proud.” Or was it that I was finally learning? Not really sure what that meant, cause I still think I could’ve handled it a lot better.
Now I’m sitting in my bed alone.. kind of. I’m not really ever truly alone now, but it feels lonelier despite that.
Jeremy.
Yeah..?
I can sense you are feeling upset. Would you like me to run protocols to—
No.. no, don’t do that.. it’s just… I was a jerk to my best friend, and now he hates me, and it’s all so messed up.. it’s Halloween, I should be celebrating.. but the party is over, and there’s nobody for me to call..
Would you like to hear a story?
Huh..? Why now..?
On Halloween, humans like to exchange what you call ‘scary stories.’
seriously, not the time..
Are you sure? It’s a pretty good one.
Fine! If you care so goddamn much!
Alright. A few years ago while squips were still in developmental testing phases, many incidents occurred. Despite the tests being very controlled and monitored, there was a specific test that went completely and utterly wrong.
Now this got my attention. Insensitive for the squip to be telling me this now, but I do enjoy horror stories myself. Especially with zombies. Well, at least that’s what I think it’s going to be. Minus the zombie part.
Yes Jeremy, it could be considered a ‘horror’ story. But it’s not horror, it’s just how things went.
Fuck. I forgot you were in my head.
I should continue. The human which was the subject of the study had started the testing normally. Compared to other subjects, adapting relatively quickly and efficiently. But the scientists began to notice they had vibrant circuit scars all over their back, and before they took action, spread to the subjects arms and legs, later even their head.
I looked down at my own arm, and rolled up my sleeve, staring at the circuit scars ingrained in my skin.
Are you scared Jeremy?
Well you haven’t even told me what went wrong, so no I don’t really think—
Don’t lie to me, Jeremy. I’m inside your brain.
Uhhhhhhggggggggg.
Shortly after this, the subject began to exhibit signs of higher intellect. The scientists discovered that the squip was able to control not only certain things, like nerves, but also motor functions, like moving and talking.
What? You can’t be serious..
But I am.
That thought made me queasy. The squip can control bodies? It could take over mine? I don’t wanna think about that.
Of course, the subject was trying to fight back against the force the squip was putting on their conscious. The pressure and suppression was starting to slam the two fighting sides together. This fight went on for so long that they started getting stuck when either side tried to pull away.
Stuck how?
It would be hard to determine who was in control, because both were controlling the body at once.
Wait.. how would it even be possible for them both to do that?
I’ll get to that. The more they clashed, the more stuck together the consciousnesses became. Until, the scientists determined that both sides had merged into one consciousness.
…oh my god. Are you serious?
Just imagining the image of that was absolutely disgusting. Could that happen to me? How does that even begin to work in the first place? The result must have been horrible!
Calm down Jeremy. As I told you, this was during testing phase, and cannot happen—
Please! Shut! Up! I don’t wanna hear this story anymore!
Okay. Would you like—
Shut down!
…
I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote ‘never let the squip tell a horror story ever again.’
