Summary
Daniel’s life has always looked the same. Working every summer at the boathouse, renting boats to holidaymakers and then coming home exhausted after long, hot, days to his emotionally absent mum. With the knowledge that all of his friends will be leaving the Norfolk Broads to go to university at the end of the season, he's thoroughly suffocated.
It’s a balmy Monday morning in June 2009, when the Lesters park their impressively clean red car next door, the latest round of tourists to arrive at the Windmill House. Daniel doesn’t pay much attention to them. That is, until he meets their oldest child. Phil is curious, inquisitive, and, much to Daniel’s chagrin, relentless in his mission to befriend him.
Quietly, Daniel thinks Phil is quite pretty, too.
Over the week that follows, steeped in the haze of warmth, with Peach Schnapps-drenched bonfires and sweaty teenage parties, they become almost impossibly intertwined.
Daniel thinks this is the first time in his life that he’s been given something just for him.
He knows their time is finite and that Phil must return home. How will Daniel cope with the frayed bits of his life that are left over when they say goodbye?
