Heartbeat

Summary:

Paige, heavily pregnant, is rushed to Chicago Med after a sudden scare. Jay Halstead, her boyfriend of just over a year, lies with her in the hospital, holding her and talking to their baby, keeping them both calm with gentle words and steady love.

Work Text:

The rain had started as a drizzle, soft enough that it almost felt peaceful, but by the time Jay got home from his shift, it had turned into a torrent, hammering against the roof and windows of the house he shared with Paige. He had barely hung up his jacket before hearing the faint sound of her whimpering from the bedroom.

“Paige?” he called, his voice tight with concern.

She was sitting on the edge of the bed, one hand pressed to her belly, eyes wide and pale. “Jay… it hurts,” she whispered, her voice trembling.

Jay dropped to his knees beside her, taking her hand in his. “It’s okay. I’m right here. Tell me what’s going on.”

“I… I don’t know,” she stammered. “It just started. Sharp… and then I felt dizzy. I think the baby…” Her voice broke, and Jay’s heart clenched. They had been dating for just over a year, and living together for the past six months; she was already the center of his world.

“Hey, hey,” he murmured, brushing damp hair from her forehead. “We’re going to the hospital, okay? Chicago Med. I’m not leaving you.”

Paige nodded weakly, leaning on him for support. Jay helped her to her feet, holding her close as he guided her to the car. The rain soaked them instantly, but he didn’t care. He had to get her there.

The ride was tense and quiet except for her soft breaths and occasional moans of discomfort. Jay’s hands gripped the wheel tightly, stealing glances at her every few seconds, chest tightening each time she flinched.

“You’re doing great,” he murmured, more to calm himself than her. “Almost there.”

At Chicago Med, Jay practically carried her inside. The nurses took one look at her and immediately moved into action.

“Pregnant female, thirty-six weeks, possible preterm labor,” Jay said quickly. “I’m her boyfriend. We’ve been together a little over a year. She started having severe pain and dizziness, and—” He trailed off as a nurse guided Paige to a wheelchair.

The room was bright and sterile, but the quiet beep of the monitors made Jay’s stomach twist. He pulled a chair close to the bed and held her hand.

“Jay… I’m scared,” Paige whispered.

“I know,” he said softly. “I’m scared too, but we’re together. I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere. You hear me?”

Paige squeezed his hand weakly. “Can… can you… lay with me?”

Jay shook his head gently. “They won’t let me just yet,” he said softly. “But I’m right here. I’ll hold your hand the whole time.”

Her lip trembled. “I… I just want you close.”

“I know,” he murmured, leaning down to kiss her temple.

The doctors and nurses worked quickly, checking vitals, running monitors, and inserting IVs. Jay stayed at her side, whispering reassurances, brushing hair from her face.

Then the alarm sounded—the monitor’s sharp beep made Jay’s stomach drop. “Jay… the baby’s heart…” Paige gasped.

“I know, I know,” he said, voice trembling. “Breathe. We’re okay. We’re okay.”

Minutes stretched like hours. He whispered her name, stroked her hair, and tried to distract her from fear.

Once the alarms ceased and the monitor showed a steady heartbeat, Paige asked again, softer: “Jay… can you… lay with me now?”

Jay smiled. “Yeah… yeah, I can.”

He carefully slid onto the bed beside her, adjusting without hurting her. Resting his arm around her, his hand brushed her stomach. “Hey, little one,” he whispered, rubbing in soothing circles. “You’re safe. Mommy’s safe. I’ve got you.”

Paige leaned into him, head on his chest. He pressed a kiss to her hair, holding her as best he could. “You’re strong,” he whispered. Then to the baby: “I know it’s scary. We’re okay. I can’t wait to meet you. We’ve got a big world for you to explore, and we’ll be right there every step of the way. Mommy loves you so much. I love you too. And I promise… I’ll always be here.”

He rubbed her stomach, feeling subtle movements beneath his hand. “Do you feel that? That’s Daddy talking. You’re going to have adventures… we’ll play, we’ll laugh so much. You’re going to be brave, and you’re going to be loved every single day.”

Paige smiled through tears. “You’re amazing,” she whispered.

“No, we’re amazing,” Jay said. “You, me… and this little one. We’re a team. Nothing’s going to change that.”

As Paige relaxed, finally drifting toward sleep, Jay stayed with her. He continued rubbing her belly, whispering softly. “I can’t wait to see your little hands. Your tiny feet. You’re going to be so curious… so full of life. We’ll read stories together, play outside, have messy mornings… Mommy and Daddy will be right there. Always.”

He pressed a kiss to her temple again. “We’re going to give you the best life. We’ll protect you. We’ll love you more than anything in this world.”

Jay held Paige closer, feeling the baby stir beneath his hand. “I love you, little one,” he whispered. “You’ve already changed our world, and you haven’t even arrived yet.”

And in that quiet hospital room, with the soft beep of the monitor marking their little heartbeat, Jay let himself breathe. Paige’s hand in his, her cheek against his shoulder, and the tiny life moving beneath his palm—it was more than enough.

Sometimes, love was simply being there, refusing to let go, holding on until the heartbeat returned—and whispering promises to the little life growing inside.
