Work Text:

It was stupid how quiet the streets were.

Past midnight, warm breeze. The kind of quiet that made Minho's head too loud. His heart too loud.

Seungmin walked beside him with his hands in his hoodie pocket, hair fluffy from the wind, blinking slowly like he'd fall asleep standing up if not for the iced coffee he was nursing like a baby bottle.

Minho watched him out of the corner of his eye.

And cursed himself, for the hundredth time tonight, for liking him so stupidly much.

They stopped by the park bench near the neighbourhood bus stop, where the moon was hanging just slightly crooked in the sky, like it had been slapped sideways by a cloud.

Minho took a breath.

Seungmin plopped onto the bench with a dramatic groan. "Hyung, this walk was supposed to be ten minutes. It's been thirty-two. You better confess you killed someone or have cancer."

Minho blinked. "What."

"You're acting weird."

"I'm not."

"You are. You've been looking at me like you're in a historical drama. Are you dying?"

Minho sighed. "No. But I am going to confess something."

Seungmin sat up straighter, eyes suddenly wide. "Wait—seriously?"

"Yes."

"Oh my god," he whispered. "You do have cancer."

Minho groaned and leaned on the railing behind the bench. "Seungmin-ah."

"What?! You said it with the tone! Don't people always say that before dying?"

"I'm not dying. I—like you."

Pause.

Seungmin stared at him. Blinked once. Then again.

"...like like?"

"Yes," Minho said, already regretting everything. "Like like. As in romantically. As in I think you're adorable and annoying and weirdly hot when you're bossy and I want to kiss you stupid."

Seungmin made a small squeaky noise in his throat.

"... I thought you were going to confess murder..."

"Well, I am dying inside. "

Seungmin didn't say anything.

Minho, flustered and very aware of how bad this was going, glanced up at the sky and muttered, "Ah... the moon looks like shit today."

Silence.

Then—

"...What?"

Minho looked down again.

Seungmin was staring at him like he'd just been slapped.

"Did you just... compare me to the moon and say I look like shit?"

"What—no. That's not—"

"So I'm ugly."

Minho's jaw dropped. "No?!"

"I thought you liked me!" Seungmin wailed, standing up and throwing his arms out. "But you think I'm ugly like a cratered rock in the sky!"

"I did not say you were cratered!"

"You said the moon looks like shit!" Seungmin pointed up, then at himself, then at the sky again. "The moon is beautiful means I love you, right? So the moon looks like shit means you hate me! Or you think I'm repulsive!"

"Why is your brain like this?" Minho exclaimed.

"Because I'm sensitive," Seungmin snapped. "And now I'm heartbroken!"

Minho dragged a hand over his face. "Seungmin. Baby. Please."

Seungmin crossed his arms, lips wobbling dramatically. "This is worse than cancer."

Minho reached out and gently tugged him by the sleeve until he slumped back down on the bench. "Okay. Listen. I said the moon looks like shit because I was mad at the timing of my own confession and the awkward silence and how it ruined the mood."

Seungmin sniffled. "So I'm not ugly?"

Minho groaned. "No, you absolute disaster, you're the prettiest little shit I've ever seen."

"That's not a compliment."

"It is when I say it!"

Seungmin looked away, pout still firmly in place. "You should've just said 'I love you.' Then stared at the moon wistfully. Then kissed me."

"...Wait. So I can kiss you?"

Seungmin blinked.

Then made a face. "No, you ruined the mood. You said the moon looks like shit."

"You ruined the mood by fake-crying over a rock in the sky! And what I said didn't even mean you're ugly, it meant I hate you!"

"I was valid."

"You were unhinged."

"Touch me and I'll sue."

Minho grinned, already leaning in.

"I'll take that risk, sweetheart."

And then, despite the chaos, despite the terrible confession and miscommunication and the absolute ridiculousness of it all, Minho kissed him.

Soft. Short. Just enough.

When he pulled back, Seungmin blinked up at him, stunned.

"...That was actually good."

"Thanks?"

"I mean. For someone who says the moon looks like shit, you're alright."

Minho leaned in again. "I'll take that as a compliment."

"You better."

They stayed like that, under the questionable moon, quiet now — until Seungmin muttered:

"...Still think you called me ugly though."

Minho groaned and buried his face in his hands.
