Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

The night was silent, the room so dark that few could see anything—though that posed no problem for a fox. Dressed in his school uniform and a dark hooded cloak, the student walked slowly toward the door, the only sound the rhythmic creak of his footsteps against the wooden floor. He paused to drink from a small vial of blood, wiping his mouth with slow, deliberate movements before tossing the glass aside with utter indifference. The sound of shattering glass echoed through the empty space.

He reached for the door, but his ear twitched. Footsteps. Someone was behind him. The fox spun around, catching sight of a taller figure looming in the darkness, eyes gleaming with a sharp, cold anger. After a few brief, heavy seconds of silence, the stranger lunged.

A week passed, but the sense of insecurity and uncertainty at the school remained. Students once had the freedom to roam at night, but a strict curfew now kept everyone confined to their dormitories. Groups of students had begun patrolling the grounds, desperate to reclaim some sense of safety for their peers. But the truth was, no one truly felt safe. The killer had not been found, and while details were scarce, the rumor was a heavy weight on everyone's chest: a carnivore had murdered another under the cover of night.

The following morning, Legoshi sat on his bed, lost in thought. Around him, his roommates were already up, adjusting their uniforms and preparing for the first class of the day. But the large wolf remained trapped in the small, quiet world inside his head. While life carried on, Legoshi stayed still.

Jack, noticing his friend’s distraction, walked over with a concerned smile.

"Need a little push to wake up?" he asked.

"No need, Jack. I’m fine," Legoshi replied, his voice low.

The labrador sat on the edge of the adjacent bed, looking at him. "What do you think about us joining the night patrol?"

"There aren't any spots left," Legoshi said, finally looking up. "And do they even do anything? It just feels like an excuse to wander around at night."

"Actually, a new spot just opened up," Jack insisted. "I thought about putting together a team with you and the others. I don’t know if it really helps, but I’m tired of being stuck in this room. They even say there’s a reward—I’m just not sure if it’s money or extra credit."

Jack pressed a bit further, but he quickly realized the wolf’s disinterest was unshakable. Nothing he said could lift his friend’s spirits or pull him out of his own head.
