Work Text:
This is a lore companion to my story I Hope You’re Proud Grandfather. If you have no interest in reading that, you probably won’t care about this. It will be edited as I write I Hope You’re Proud.
If you want to take some of these ideas for your own fanfiction, feel free. Do what you want.
Magic
Using magic wizards can replicate some muggle technology like walkie talkies. Arithromancy is the study of how the latent magical energy throughout the world (think of how the Force is in all living things) interacts with physical things and can be used to predict the weather or assist with new spell creation.
People are born with magic in them that leans either “light” or “dark.” Light magic makes a magical better at learning healing or constructive magic, while dark magic means a wizard will learn destructive magic easier. It has no direct impact on a person’s personality and doesn’t limit what a witch or wizard can learn, just what types of magic it is easier for them to cast.
The type of magic you are born with is usually dependent on what your parents had. Sirius for instance, has very dark magic. Harry has slightly dark magic, unusual for a Potter.
Mind magics don’t involve a mindscape or anything like that. At a surface level, legilimancy can detect emotions and the focus of thoughts but you need context to put things together. For instance, if somebody usually bubbly and happy is quiet and reserved one day, a legilimens could detect that they are sad and thinking about their dog. You could then piece together that the person’s dog died without hearing the words my dog was put down yesterday and I’m sad. At a deeper level, legilimancy can see memories. As all memories range from slightly to greatly modified by the brain, it doesn't show what definitively did happen, just what the person remembers happening.
Wizengamot
The Wizengamot is basically the House of Commons and House of Lords combined. It was founded by pureblood families who would pass on their hereditary seat. There were several centuries of class struggle, culminating in the current structure of 32 voted seats and 32 hereditary seats. If a House was declared extinct, a voted seat would have to be removed in the next election cycle to keep the balance. The Supreme Mugwump provides the tiebreaking vote if needed. Parliamentary style democracy. Fudge is the Minister but Dumbledore is widely considered the real political power
The current parties are
Legacy Party - continuation of the Blood Party that formed the foundation of Voldemort’s early support. Composed solely of hereditary seats held by pureblood elitist families. Lead by Lucius Malfoy, minority party
Open Market Party - Composed of hereditary seats led by Cyrus Greengrass. Not muggleborn champions but more friendly with Dumbledore than Malfoy over time. Not overtly pureblood supremacists, not composed of former Death Eaters.
Progression Party - Pro Dumbledore purebloods led by Amelia Bones, part of the ruling coalition. Pro muggleborn liberal party.
National Conclave Party - Run by Amir Patil. He is a pureblood in India but has no hereditary British seat. Every member of the party has to be voted in or recorded every four years. Composed primarily of those with foreign blood trying to find acceptance in traditionally insular British society, minority party.
New Market Party - Headed by Tom McGlaggen until his retirement from politics during Harry’s third year. Entirely voted seats, primarily gets votes from the middle class muggleborns and halfbloods, part of Dumbledore’s coalition.
New Society Party - Head by Jen Grishem, best known for fighting for the rights of first generation muggleborns and creatures. Very liberal party, part of Dumbledore’s coalition.
Political Map
The magical world and the muggle one do not mirror each other exactly. These are all of the differences that are or will be relevant to the story.
Great Britain and Ireland - Magical Ireland never split away from the UK.
Cerulean Empire - Veela state throughout magical France. It has no centralized territory, but instead several enclaves spread around France with the castle on an island in the Mediterranean. I’ve already explored this concept in a different fanfiction of mine, You Know I’d Never Lie to You. Keep in mind, these enclaves are sovereign Cerulean soil and Cerulean veela and French veela are not the same. Ruled by an empress.
Velslavia (terrible name, sorry I couldn’t think of a better one) - Another veela nation in south eastern Europe, comprising of the northern reaches of what used to be muggle Yugoslavia, now much of Croatia and Slovenia.
Transylvania - Only vampire led nation in Eurasia. Look up a map of the region of Transylvania and you’ll get a map of this fictional nation. As you might guess Romania is not happy about their existence and the two spend a lot of their time fighting.
Kurdistan - Sykes and Picot were muggles who divided up the Ottoman Empire after World War I. Magical France and Britain had less interest in colonial empires and the magical Ottoman Empire fractured more along ethnic lines. Kurdistan is a large and regionally powerful nation stretching across northern muggle Syria and Iraq, from Latakia to Kirkuk and also includes parts of southeastern muggle Türkiye. This is because the ethnic Kurds produce an unusually high number of magical individuals.
Saudi Arabia - I don’t know what country controls the Arabian peninsula, but the Saudi family is entirely muggle and without magical Saudis you can’t have magical Saudi Arabia.
Population
The magical population of the world in the 1990s was roughly 800 million. Britain’s magical population in the 1990 census is 902,137.
Magical Creatures
Goblins have no independent nation of their own after all the goblin wars but possess a high level of autonomy in certain nations. Gringotts for instance has the right to punish anyone they catch attempting to steal from their vaults. If you break into Gringotts and are caught, don’t expect the British government to negotiate your release. Goblins and humans coexist, though neither likes each other very much.
Giants are going extinct like in canon. They’ve reached what is called a genetic bottleneck in their isolated populations, which basically means each individual population is so small, and there is no travel between them, that everyone is slightly too highly inbreed. Experts expect the last giant to die around the year 2200.
Werewolves have no dedicated country because lycanthropy isn’t hereditary, you have to be bitten to be a werewolf. They work and live mostly on the outskirts of society. Like all groups of people, some are just trying to work or raise a family, some turn to crime, some bite everyone they can etc.
Vampires - Most vampires in Europe live in Transylvania where they’re in a constant cold war with Bulgarian wizards (Not a cold war as in the Cold War between the US and USSR where they never directly attack each other, but cold war as a constant, low-grade conflict. Think of the Russo-Ukrainian War between 2015-2022 as a cold war and the war since February 2022 as a hot war). Vampires and werewolves have a blood feud. The only time they don’t kill each other on sight is when they decide they hate wizards more and set a temporary, informal truce.
Veela - I’m basing veela off of veela in Harry Potter and the International Tri-Wizard Tournament, probably my favorite fanfiction of all time. They’re not just pretty humans with an allure and bird form. A veela will only ever give birth to daughters, who are all full veela. Certain physical traits always breed true, like blonde hair and white eyes. Veela find it very difficult to conceive and it is unlikely one will have more than two or three daughters in a lifetime. Veela fire is a little different from normal fire. It’s faintly golden, burns a little hotter, is a little more difficult to put out. Nothing too crazy. They also have their own languages, that can't be spoken by humans or veela while in their human form.
Veela hate being submerged underwater for long periods of time. They can also feel a person’s emotion with physical contact and are quite monogamous. They never show deference to wizards in public because of millennia of being sex trafficked. There is a species-wide pressure to never show subservience to wizardkind again. Veela are not human and view themselves as something very different, despite the physical similarities.
