Work Text:
Adam’s hands kept a gentle grip on his camera as he walked into the hospital’s parking garage. He’d just earned another fifty dollars to stalk this random doctor, so despite the cold of the garage, he pushed through. It was an easy job, anyway. Just take a few pictures and then leave- A great job for a broke, but lazy, guy like him.
He looked around before spotting an area similar to an alleyway- Somewhere he could duck behind in case the doctor nearly spotted him. He took his place there, crouching down behind the wall and readying his camera to have the perfect settings.
He didn’t really like this job, in all honesty. It made him feel a little guilty to spy on a man he didn’t even know the name of. But after reminding himself of the money he earned from this job, all of his morals were pushed aside. Besides, he didn’t come all the way here to not even do his job!
He positioned his camera, staring at the screen and occasionally glancing up and around to see if anyone was nearby. The coast was clear, and now all he had to do was wait. Well, he thought the coast was clear.
“Wow,” a voice said from behind Adam, causing him to whip his head around. “That’s a nice looking camera.” Adam swallowed as his head slowly lifted to look at the person. He knew those blue eyes and blonde hair very well now. The doctor.
“Thanks,” Adam replied blankly, trying to end the conversation right there. He wasn’t really in the mood for questioning his morals again. And then the doctor spoke again.
“Are you a photographer?” The man had a big smile on his face, his tone friendly as he spoke. What a great way to make Adam feel worse about this…
“I, uh, I guess?” Adam returned the doctor’s grin with a grin of his own, much more awkward than the sophisticated man’s. “It’s more of a hobby than anything.”
“Oh, I see,” the doctor replied. Adam was hoping it would end there, but the doctor didn’t seem in a rush to go anywhere. “How long have you been taking photos for?” Adam wanted to hate this guy enough to make an abrupt stop to the conversation without feeling bad, but he was pretty nice…
Plus, not a lot of people ever asked Adam questions about his hobbies. Adam stood, running a hand through his black hair before it situated itself back on the camera by instinct.
“A few years now,” Adam replied, a little less quiet this time. His dark eyes slowly met the doctor’s bright ones. The doctor smiled softer this time.
“I bet you’re great at it then!” The doctor didn’t wait another second before holding out his hand to shake Adam’s. “I’m Lawrence.” Adam hesitated before slowly extending his hand to shake Lawrence’s.
“Adam.” He slowly let go of Lawrence’s hand, placing his own firmly back on the camera. “I’m assuming you’re a doctor? ‘Cause the white coat and stuff.” Adam gave another awkward smile. He totally didn’t know Lawrence was a doctor from prior knowledge!
“Yep,” Lawrence chuckled, “you’re right about that. I just got off my shift, actually!”
“Oh, really?” Adam glanced away. “What a coincidence, huh?” He attempted to laugh it off, but he couldn’t help feeling a little guilty as he was reminded he came here at this specific time to take pictures of Lawrence. Lawrence seemed to notice Adam’s shift in mood, because he quickly changed the topic.
“Would you mind showing me how your camera works? I’ve always wondered.” Lawrence shot another bright smile at Adam, and although it was likely just a question of curiosity, Adam couldn’t help but enjoy the feeling of someone being interested in his hobbies.
“Of course!” Adam’s awkwardness was almost completely gone after the simple question, stepping over to Lawrence’s side to show him the camera. He held it up for Lawrence to see, one hand supporting the large lens while the other supported the base.
“So, you can twist the lens to zoom in and out,” he demonstrated by twisting it back and forth, the screen showing the zooming in and out of the wall in front of him. “And you can mess around with the other settings, too! But my camera doesn’t have a whole lot of those ‘cause it’s kinda old.” Adam demonstrated this as well by twisting the little knob located near the flash of the camera.
“That’s pretty cool,” Lawrence commented, a faint smile on his face as he stared at the camera. He waited a second longer, almost hesitating before speaking again. “Could you take a photo of me?”
Adam stared for a few moments, almost laughing to himself about the irony of that question. He had a lot of photos of Lawrence. Well, not on him anymore, he’d given them to the detective that was paying him, but still! It was kind of funny. Adam blinked before snapping out of his little daze.
“Sure, sure, uh.” He took a step away from Lawrence, standing in front of him now in the narrow, grey hallway. “Stand against the wall so I can get a decent background. I don’t think a parking lot would be too great of one.” Lawrence nodded, chuckling again at Adam’s statement.
He leaned back against the wall, giving the camera in front of him a polite smile. Adam smiled back at Lawrence, lifting the camera so that it was positioned in a way that made the image look more portrait-like. He dimmed down the flash of his camera, since he didn’t want to temporarily blind Lawrence. Plus, if the flash was too bright it’d ruin the photo.
He took a quick picture, the flash illuminating Lawrence for a second or two before turning off. The camera slowly loaded up the image on the digital screen, a nice photo of Lawrence popping up. Adam turned the camera around to show Lawrence, who was immediately way too amazed by the simple picture.
“Wow! That’s great! You really should be a photographer!” Lawrence’s grin was huge now. He must’ve really liked the photo, huh? “Hey, could you email that to me or something? I’d love to save it.”
Adam smiled. His work was that good?
“Sure. What’s your-” He was quickly interrupted by Lawrence holding out a business card. It seemed he was very prepared… Adam slowly took the card before stuffing it in his flannel pocket.
“I have to run, but it was great meeting you, Adam!” Lawrence waved before walking away. Adam took a moment to process the sentence before waving back.
Adam watched Lawrence walk to his car, and he made a quick promise to himself that he’d quit stalking the guy.
