Work Text:
You are a new investigator starting out your job in trying to find the answers to the unanswered questions of the paranormal world. You sought this job, not for answers, but to put food on the table. Being a single parent was hard, you found, and this job paid well even whilst risky.
You sigh as you flick through the case files, knowing that the company's going to saddle you with the hardest case for your first job. You are a greenie after all, plus, they could claim your insurance and get some free money.
You hear somebody call your name, your boss. "Uh- yes, sir?" You startle slightly, brushing out the creases in your uniform as you try to look presentable.
Your boss gives you a knowing look, but doesn't say much about your appearance. "Your first case." Your boss slams the paperwork onto your desk and walks away without another word.
You look down at the paperwork in front of you before pinching the page to flip it over to your first case.
Case Number: #0001
Name: Sarah Rogers
Age: 36
You take a deep breath and hold it.It's really happening...
You park the van on the road in front of the home. The home used to be owned by a family before they ran back to their old house due to the paranormal activity. You can see the vines growing from the red brick out of the house. It looks well-loved and yet abandoned.
Reports of ghost hunts were uncommon but not unheard of. It was quite scary to encounter since you could quite literally die in seconds from something that wasn't even meant to be alive anymore.
You turn your torch on, placing it onto your shoulder as you lean down to grab some more items. An EMF reader, thermometer, and a Writing Book. You struggle trying to juggle all of the items in your hands, but you manage to make it to the front door.
The door was broken in, obvious by the broken glass on the front of the door.
You turn around to push the door with your back as you carry your equipment inside of the house. It's freezing cold, and the smell reeks of death as you shiver from both fear and at the temperature. You scrunch your nose at the smell with an unpleasant huff.
Whilst almost dropping your equipment, you manage to turn on your EMF reader. You also take out your guide book.
Hunting Ghosts for Dummies.
Whilst the title of the book was degrading, you grudgingly admit that it's helpful.
You flip over to the page "Finding the Ghost room."
To find the ghost room, you can use these two items; Thermometer, EMF reader. You only need one to find the Ghost room.
If you turn on your thermometer and get below seven degrees Celsius, you have found the Ghost room.
If you turn on your EMF reader and it shows up with 2 lights on, it means that this is the Ghost room.
Your job is to find out which Ghost type Sarah Rogers is.
You reluctantly turn your EMF reader on, jumping when you hear a dripping noise. You shake your head as you tssk at you startling from just water.
You carefully encroach into the house with silent footsteps, afraid of what? The ghost.
You've heard rumours about what happened to the other investigators on other cases. You didn't want to become like them.
For awhile, all you do is tiptoe around the household, terrified of what you can't see and the unknown, but eventually, your EMF reader beeps loudly. It startles you so badly that you manage to drop it onto the floor.
You found the Ghost room. It's in the Kid's Bedroom up the stairs.
You decide to leave your EMF reader on the ground as it's easier to hold the other items that way. You turn on your thermometer, and all it shows was ---
Both frustrated and impatient, you try to bang the thermometer against the wall to get it working again. Eventually, it flickers on and you see the temperature.
-4.37°C
You try to flick the lights on, but it's completely dark. You're cold, in complete darkness, and miserable.
You read back to your manual on Ghost hunting onto the page about thermometers.
If below 0.00°C, then that's evidence that this type of Ghost likes cold rooms. Freezing Temperatures.
You mark freezing temperatures on in your journal as a note for later.
You sniffle before remembering you brought the writing book. You place it down and just simply wait. And wait. And wait.
Then suddenly, you jerk backwards as you see a glass thrown at you. Your EMF reader goes off like crazy, beeping loud enough to pierce your ears. You cover your ears as you blindly reach out for your EMF reader.
The EMF reader was all the way up at red, with 5 lights on...
More Evidence. You also mark this into your journal for later before you end up forgetting something.
You flinch as you hear distant screaming downstairs, likely just the ghost taunting you. You remember your boss warning you about that when you took this job, amongst other things.
The white fog from your breath mists in the air before disappearing in rhythmic pulses from your ragged breathing.
You just want to go home, hug your kid, and go to sleep. But you know that won't happen. Not for a long time.
Shivering, you kneel down by the writing book, waiting for the ghost to do something.
Jumping at another scream, you sigh into the darkness of the family home. You feel a big sense of dread wash over you, and then you flinch as you hear footsteps.
You're supposed to be alone...
You look behind you, further into the children's room, and you see it. A dark figure lunging after you. You drop your EMF reader and scramble out of the room, slamming the door behind you, as you run down the stairs, skipping every other step.
You eventually get to the front door and twist the knob. You feel a cold sense of realisation wash over you. You didn't lock the door before, so why's it locked now?
You can hear footsteps coming from down the stairs, screeches and yells following the dark figure chasing you. You yank at the door knob, praying it'll open.
You stumble and fall out from the front door as it suddenly opens, the dark figure fading into mist before disappearing completely.
"What the hell?" You whisper to yourself, arms crossing over your chest as you try to bring some warmth back into your body, and to comfort yourself from whatever the hell that was.
You hear distant voices and screeches inside of the house, and that's when you see it.
There's a mark on the window next to the door on the inside. It looks like...
A fingerprint...
You remember reading about it in your Guide book. It's evidence. You sag with relief as you pick yourself up off of the path, slamming the front door shut behind you as you scramble back into your van, shaking with fear and a sense of relief that this case is over.
Before leaving, you flip through your journal before marking off the Ghost that fits all three evidences.
Banshee
You get to the drivers seat and speed away back to your headquarters. And not once did you look back, in fear of the ghost following you back.
