Kaycee sat on the empty stairwell, still in her scrubs, hands pressed against her eyes.
“Everyone keeps saying I’m ready,” she whispered when Ethan found her. “But, what if I’m not? What if I... fail?”
He sat down and placed a hand on her knee. “Kaycee, you’ve spent years proving you belong here.”
She gave a small, doubtful laugh.
“You’re brilliant,” he insisted. “You see what others miss. And you care. You’re the real deal, MacKlennan.”
She looked at him, hope flickering in her eyes.
“For you, the sky’s the limit.”
“You believe that?” she asked.
“No, I know it.”
