It was a typical day for Lin.
He was writing songs for a movie in his apartment but then he got a call.
It was a number he didn't recognize whatsoever .
He lets it ring thinking it's just another scammer but then 30 minutes later they called back again.
Just as Lin picks up,Vanessa enters the house.
“Hi Lin Im-” but then she was cut off by the fact that Lin was on call.
Lin's toxic mother picks up the last time Lin ever spoke words to her was when he was 17 being kicked out.
“Lin your grandmother's gone,could you come back home for her funeral”.
Lin wanted to say no,did they really think he was coming after everything they did to him.
But then again his grandmother was the only one who really cared.
The only one who showed him love and empathy in that toxic place.
He stutters,”Ok Ill come”.
His mother says in that fake sweetness that makes people's skin crawl”wonderful see you in a week sweetie and..come alone”.
Lin could hear the golden child through the phone,Jose “See you at the funeral brother”.
Lin hangs up,trying to process every word his mother just told him.
Was he really going back to that toxic place?
Vanessa had heard everything.
“Was that you mother “she asks in an uncertain tone.
He just nods,”I have to go back there…for my grandmothers funeral”
Vanessa says “Do you want me to com-”.
Lin cuts him off,”I have to go alone nessy,just watch the kids for me will you”.
Francisco walks up to his dad with his stubby legs “Where's papa going?”.
Lin picks up his son,”On a little trip,I promince I'll be back soon”.
Francisco wines”Why cant I come”.
Lin looks at his wife trying to find the right words.
“Because there's no kids aloud”,Lin was barely keeping a smile together.
“Buuuuut Ill bring you back a gift ok buddy”.
His eyes light up with joy “Thanks daddy”.
Lin puts him down heading towards the shared bedroom of his wife to pack his things.
Vanessa follows him silently as he enters the room grabbing his carry-on,unzipping the zipper and laying it out on the bed.
“Are you sure you can handle it” mummers Vanessa, grabbing Lin's hips,trying to release the tension that he was building up in his body because of the funeral.
Lin whispers softly “Always,baby always”.
Her hands fly off his hips,now helping him pack.
Lin says “I need about a week of clothes”,
They pack in silence for the next ten minutes. The only thing they could hear was the kids playing in their house.
The two of them finish.
“I leave tomorrow”he says.
Vanessa offers,”Wanna help me make dinner”.
“Of course,” Lin says.

Lin wakes up at 5 am getting ready to catch his flight.
Before he leaves he kisses Vanessa on the cheek
“Bye my love” Lin mutters against her face,"I'll see you in a week”.
Vanessa grows a tiny bit conscious because of Lin's kiss but soon falls asleep right after.
Lin drives to the airport. Any person would be excited to see their family but not Lin of course.
He goes through security and the guard asks him “Purpose of visit”.
Lin reaches for the back of his neck,”Oh just visiting some..family”.
The Security guard scrunches his brows,”Family issues”.
Lin nods awkwardly.
“Come along sir” the security guard pushes him through,"Next" they scream the next person was already being questioned.
Lin gets on his flight to Nevis,god he wished his grandmother didn't die just so then he didn't have to see his family again.
