The day had started like any other—grueling training, tense negotiations, and the usual threats lingering in the air like static.
You didn’t expect anything special.
But when you returned to the small room you shared with Reiko, the dim light flickering from a single candle, your breath caught.
There, on the low table, sat a small wooden box—intricately carved with ancient symbols, the scent of cedar sharp and comforting.
You looked up just in time to catch Reiko stepping inside, his usual stern expression softened by a rare, tentative smile.
“I thought you might like this,” he said quietly.
Your fingers trembled as you lifted the lid, revealing a delicate necklace—simple, elegant, a thin silver chain holding a small charm shaped like a dragon entwined with a lotus flower.
“It’s beautiful,” you whispered.
Reiko’s eyes flicked away for just a moment. “It’s an old symbol from my clan,” he explained. “Strength and peace. I want you to have it.”
You reached out, and without hesitation, he leaned down, the chain sliding over your head, the charm resting just above your heart.
Your fingers brushed against his, and for a heartbeat, everything else fell away—the danger, the war, the unspoken battles.
“Thank you,” you breathed.
He cupped your cheek, thumb tracing the line of your jaw. “You deserve more than gifts,” he murmured. “But this is a start.”
You smiled, heart swelling.
Reiko bent down, lips brushing yours in a kiss soft but full of promise.
Outside, the world was chaos.
But here, in this quiet moment, there was only you.
