that dress looks good on you but it would look better on my floor

Summary:

A shopping trip, an afternoon in bed, and another way of seeing things.

Notes:

Another migration from my livejournal. Originally posted in 2008, this was the first fanfic I ever wrote. Made a couple minor tweaks, plus changed the title from the original "Best Laid Plans" which I never really liked back then.

Work Text:

She sat up in bed leaning against a mass of pillows, blonde hair spilling across her lap. The other girl was lying on her back with a laptop precariously perched on her stomach, her attention drawn to something that most definitely had nothing to do with the adventures of Holly Golightly. Blair should have been bothered at the lack of interest in the movie, but really, she wasn’t all that interested in it either, instead focused on twirling her fingers through the blonde, silky hair, watching it slide through her fingers. Serena giggled softly, the corners of her mouth pulling upwards into a gentle smile. In a flash, she grabbed the laptop, flipped over and placed it onto Blair’s lap, where her head had been resting only a second before. The loss of contact sent an icy sting through Blair.

“Look at this,” Serena said with a grin.

“Watching a movie here,” Blair lied, staring at the screen. “Unlike someone else.”

Serena glanced over at the TV, a flicker of guilt replacing her grin for a split second. “Sorry, B. But we’ve seen this movie, like, a million times - it’s not like you don’t have it memorised by now. I know I do,” she teased as she captured the brunette’s eyes with her own. “Now read. It’ll make you laugh. Promise.” The command came out far too gentle, more like a question, or even soft pleading. Commanding was more Blair’s forte than Serena’s.

With an exaggerated huff, Blair let her eyes drift away from the girl’s over to the screen in her lap. As curious as she was to find out what had made Serena laugh, she wasn’t about to let her believe she had won that easily. Rather unsurprisingly, open on the screen was Gossip Girl’s site. At the top of the page was a picture of the two girls standing outside of Chanel, their backs half-turned to each other, each girl looking off in a different direction. It looked like someone must have taken the picture from across the street with their camera phone as several lanes of taxi cabs took up most of the bottom-half of the picture, blocking the girls from the waist down. Underneath there was a caption:

Spotted: S and B making a hasty exit after a very short shopping sesh at Chanel. (We hear they didn’t even make it inside!) What could have caused these two fashion queens to turn their backs on a girl’s favourite place- and each other? Was B jealous of how amazing S looked in her new Chloe dress? Looks like the claws might be back out…

Blair smiled at the image of Serena before turning her gaze to a pile of black and blue and purple fabric on the floor; her smile widened even more as she took in the sight of the crumpled dress. It really was an amazing dress. So amazing it had caused Blair to stray from the day’s itinerary of shopping, lunch, and cocktails with the girls, and instead inspired an impromptu afternoon spent in bed, followed by an Audrey Hepburn marathon that was only half-way through. Blair laced her fingers through Serena’s just as she knew her hand was doing in the picture, though the cabs blocked the view. Both girls gave each other a knowing smile.

“Well, at least Kati and Is will think this is why neither of us showed for drinks,” Blair surmised.

Serena grinned. “And tomorrow we can tell them we missed brunch ‘cause we were too busy making up.”
