No More Firsts

Summary:

When their children are young, there is no way for Nick or Charlie to know when the last time will be that they'll pick up their children, the last nappy to put on, the last bottle to fix, the last time charades will be necessary before it's replaced by actual words.
Nick reflects here, on the ways that Alesia's wonderful milestones also mark a farewell to those firsts.

Work Text:

Parenting our two children is a wildly fulfilling experience. It isn’t, however, wildly fulfilling at every moment. Sometimes they just scream, for no reason, and can’t be soothed because they don’t know how.

When Bailey was changing, growing, we were fairly confident he’d have a sibling. So I let his changes roll on. Now that Alesia is also growing, leaving babyhood behind her and officially becoming a toddler, demanding to be called a big girl, potty trained, it’s harder. There won’t be another baby, another first step, another babble of sounds that become words.

I cling to Charlie.

“Too fast!”
