“Hey, I’m outside your place, but.. uh, you seem to be asleep. I know it’s like 5am, but I… missed you. Call me when you wake up? I’ll be at the coffee shop, the one by the gas station.”
His voice replayed in Miseon's mind as she drove over. It was 6:15. The walk over to the coffee shop consisted of foggy exhales and the crunch of leaves beneath her shoes. She looked up to see him smiling with two coffees in hand. Taepoong handed her one as he took her other hand and stuffed it into his coat pocket.
“Your ears are red,” he spoke up, breaking the small silence.
His hand was warm from the coffee. “It’s freezing, hm?”
She nodded her head lightly.
“What did you want this early?”
He looked at her with a small grin.
“You drove here? Let’s talk in there. With your heater on full blast,” he said as he dragged her with him towards her car.
“I ordered your usual, does it taste good?”
“Yeah.” Every sip melted her probably frozen organs. He placed a small kiss on the back of her hand.
He glanced over at her, starry eyed. “I love you,” he whispered, a soft smile gracing his face. She let out a breathy laugh as she took his face in her hands, scanning every detail, engraving it in her mind.
“I love you, too.”
That was four years ago, yet the voicemail still played in her mind. Some things just never change. The leaves start to fall when September comes around and the nail polish she put on a week ago starts to chip away. Some things are just set in stone. The November flush never gets any better and the gas station coffee still melts her insides. He waits outside that old coffee shop, two coffees in hand ridiculously early in the morning. A smile ripening to the point of splitting open on his face when he sees her. Intertwined fingers, foggy windows, gas station coffee, and soft ‘i love yous’. Some things were set in stone. That’s just the way things go.
