Jump Rope

Summary:

A Loki AU where his punishment for the attack on New York is to work as a detective solving crimes. This story is based off the song Jump Rope by Neoni where I will attempt to incorporate most of the lyrics in one way or another.

Work Text:

“Hypothetical homicide?” Loki questioned as he looked upon the gruesome scene before him. He had been working with the police department for a bit now but this would be the first hes worked on a homicide.

“Its a bit more complicated than that I’m afraid.” Andrew the main police man he worked with had already been investigating the scene.

“Do tell.”

“Theres been a few killings like this but as much as we know we can’t decide if its a serial killer or some sort of cult or a lot of really dedicated copycats.”

“What makes you say that?”

“This is now the third killing where the heart has been butchered from the chest of the victim. My theory is its a weird cult. Do you know anything about cults?”

“What misconception of me do you have? Sorry to murder your perception but I know nothing about cults besides the basics of them.” Loki was bit offended that he’d be accused of having to do something with cults. He was far more refined then that.

“Well aren’t you sweet thing” Andrew rolled his eyes.

“I’m not “sweet” I’m just being polite.” Loki said sarcastically

“What are you made up of vinegar and spite and everything not nice?” Andrew and Loki never really got along. Who needs enemies with friends like these.

“I should let you know that if the circumstances were different messing with me would have been a death wish.” Loki still hated how he was just treated like a commoner. None of the police force feared him in the slightest despite his best efforts.

“Well I certainly don’t have a death wish.” Andrew took a few paces back to get a look of the whole crime scene.

“Okay Loki what do you see?”

“I see exactly what you mentioned earlier a victim with a bloody hole in their chest where their heart should be.”

“And?”

“They have bruises on their neck.”

“Meaning?”

“They were most likely strangled.”

“And?”

“By the pattern it was by a rope of some kind.” Andrew may not get along with Loki but he couldn’t deny that Loki had a decent amount of potential when it came to deducing clues from the crime scene.

“Okay so lets look around and tell me if you find anything.” The two looked around the crime scene a bit before Loki found something.

“I think I found the murder weapon.” He held up a jump rope.

“Strangled by a childrens toy.”

“Whoever killed them was a real cutthroat. But it was so obviously left out.”

“No shit Sherlock and what does that tell you?”

“Need I remind you that I’m not the aggressor here? It means either the killer is stupid, the killer was rushed, or the killer was trying to leave a message. Considering the effort it took to carve out the heart its safe to assume they weren’t rushed. That just means they’re either stupid or leaving some sort of weird message.” Loki couldn’t fathom what sort of message a jump rope was supposed to say so he was inclined to think the killer was a bit of an idiot.

“Its a bit like waterboarding someone but forgetting the actual water.” The sound of thunder was heard outside. A storm was probably about to come through. “Great now we can deal with the rain once we’re done here. I hate this job.”

“Then quit?” Loki doesn’t understand why mortals complain so much about jobs then refuse to leave them.

“You ever own a nintendo?” Loki got conversational whiplash from that question.

“What? No I’ve never heard of such a thing.”

“Its a device that lets you play games. The comparison I was trying to make is you don’t just quit the game halfway through. You see it through till the end even if theres parts you don’t like.”

“You’re comparing solving crime to a game?”

“I was trying to find a metaphor you might understand.” Loki glared at Andrew but he did have a point. Humans choosing to see something through till the end out of obligation to finishing it was remarkable.

“Alright lets pack it up maybe if we’re lucky it won’t start raining before we make it back to the station.” Andrew briefly told a few of the other cops that he and Loki were leaving and the two headed outside where it unfortunately was already raining.

“I hate the rain.” Andrew got in a nearby cop car and Loki got in the passenger seat. There wasn’t anything more they could do at the crime scene.

Notes:

Let me know what you guys think of this! If you guys really like it I can make it a full fic with a bunch of chapters themed after different Neoni songs. But if you guys aren't interested I probably won't cause I don't have lots of motivation to commit to this outside of you guys. Hence why this is a oneshot. Sorry that its a bit of a cliffhanger but again its technically a small piece of a larger story in my head that I could commit to but I don't know if I actually want to.
