Work Text:

The rusty hinges of Peggy Souphanousinphone's station wagon groan as she flings open the tailgate, revealing a backseat littered with Bobby’s half-smashed animal crackers and a stray pacifier crusted with something suspiciously orange. She adjusts her oversized turtleneck—burgundy, très chic—and squints at the pumpkin patch sprawled before her, its rows of lumpy gourds baking under the Texas sun like lazy, overfed cats.

"Mira, Bobby!" Peggy announces, waving a hand toward the field with the confidence of a woman who absolutely does not remember many actual Spanish terms.

Bobby, strapped into his car seat, blinks at her with the same mild confusion he reserves for her attempts at pancake art. A sharp click-clack of heels cuts through the dusty air. Minh strides up, Connie balanced on one hip, the toddler’s tiny patent-leather shoes dangling just above the dirt. Minh’s silk blouse—imported, obviously—shimmers like oil on water as she surveys the patch with a sniff.

"Disappointing," she declares, flicking a leaf off Connie’s sleeve. "The pumpkins are irregular like your ex-husband’s hairline."

Peggy’s laugh is too loud, too abrupt, like a car backfiring. "Oh, Minh, you’re hilarious! Hank’s bald spot is distinguished!" She reaches for Bobby, his overalls stiff with dried apple juice, and hoists him onto her hip. His sticky fingers immediately latch onto her hoop earring. "Ow! Ay caramb—dang it!"

Minh’s smirk is razor-thin. "You sound like a confused mariachi."

They drift into the patch, Connie plucking at Minh’s pearls while Bobby attempts to eat a pumpkin stem. The air smells of sun-warmed earth and cider donuts, the latter of which Peggy insists are "artisanal," though the vendor’s handwritten sign clearly says "day old."

When Minh’s manicured finger taps a particularly lopsided pumpkin, Peggy gasps. "That one’s perfect! It’s got character!"

Minh arches a brow. "It looks like it lost a fight with a lawnmower."

Peggy grins, shifting Bobby’s weight. "Just like my first marriage!"

For the first time all afternoon, Minh’s laughter isn’t mocking—just startled, bright, and genuine. The sound hangs between them, sweet and unexpected as the first chill of fall.
