Work Text:
Kaoru looks outside and watches the trees sway, the birds flying to their nest and away once more. The math teacher was rambling nonsense. Only five more minutes until the bell rings. His phone buzzed, thankfully make a loud noise like it did sometimes.
Rei
Hey, Kaoru! Do you know why Adam hasn’t been to school recently?
Kaoru
Yes, but I would rather explain it on our way to our next class.
He shut his phone off and made a quick little doodle on one of his notebook papers. It was a gorilla with Kojiro’s hair. He chuckled to himself as the bell rang.
Heading out of the classroom, he waited for Rei to accompany him to his locker. “So, are you going to tell me what happened?” Her green eyes were gleaming of curiosity, which made me laugh a bit.
Rei’s golden hair was divided into two long braids. She wore a white t-shirt with a plain black hoodie with some jeans and white Nike shoes.
“Don’t you think we should wait for Kojiro first before I spill all of the gossip? You know I don’t like to repeat myself more than once.”
Rei sighed, but obliged nonetheless. Their next class did have Kojiro in it. The table where they were assigned to sit at was actually quite convenient because Kojiro, Rei, and Kaoru were seated together. The downside is that Adam and one of his friends sits at the table too. Adam and his friend haven’t showed up to school in almost a week, and the trio didn’t see them in the halls today, so that must be a good sign.
As they approached the science lab, aggressive stomping of a couple people followed behind them. Rei turned her head to see who was being obnoxious, probably to tell them off, when Rei whispered in Kaoru’s ear.
“Hey, Adam and his friends are behind us.”
Kaoru almost stopped walking right then and there. He cursed under his breath and pulled Rei in the janitor’s closet and locked the door from the inside.
Laughter erupted from outside of the door. “You really think you can hide from us? No need to worry guys, they can’t hide in there forever, they will come out soon enough.” Adam announced and stormed off with his goons.
“What was that all about?!” Rei whisper shouted at Kaoru after Adam and his friends walked away. She pulled her phone out and texted Kojiro to meet up with them in the janitor’s closet.
…
A knock on the door made the two friends jump as they didn’t expect him to be so fast. They let him in and waited for Kaoru’s explanation.
“About a week ago, Adam and I were at S for what was supposed to be a date night.” Kaoru said, which made Kojiro grimace in response. “Well, this kid beat Adam’s cousin, and Adam was infuriated. The guy literally went up to the kid, and pushed him off the hill! Thankfully, police from below saw what happened and took him into custody, but after that moment I knew I had to break up with him. Who just does that because your cousin loses a race?! Anyway, I broke up with him over text because I didn’t want to deal with the arguing and confrontation, but it appears he isn’t making it any easier than it should be.”
“What is wrong with that guy? Is he mental? I can’t even imagine what him and his friends want to do with you.” Rei responded.
“Kaoru, if those guys lay even a finger on you, let me know and I’ll beat them up for you.” Kojiro offered.
“Shut up, you stupid gorilla. I’ll be perfectly fine. I know he won’t try to hurt me or anything, but I would rather not talk about this anymore or go back to class. Can we stay in here and talk about something else?”
Normally, Kojiro would’ve argued back at Kaoru, but he knew this time wasn’t the best time to start an argument.
“Did you guys see Lenore’s outfit today? It was honestly so cute, but she is even cuter!” Rei brought up, and it looked like heart eyes were coming out of her head.
“It’s not like you have mentioned that for the twentieth time today. Honestly, when will you get over her! I thought this was like a two day thing then you would be over her.” Kojiro complained.
“I would say you’re just jealous because Rei has an actual chance to date Lenore and you can’t even get anyone to date you for a week. Sure, you might be handsome based on what the other girls say, but your personality ruins everything.” Kaoru shot back.
“Actually, men have said that to me as well! Not to mention, my longest relationship has been like two months. Remind me again how many relationships have you been in?”
“Oh shut up you filthy animal. At least I have brains and I’m a kind soul.”
“Children, children. Let’s settle down now. Anyway, have you seen how green Lenore’s eyes are? They are like mine, but way prettier than I could even imagine. Maybe we can have green eyed children together!” Rei gawked.
After a while of Rei rambling on about Lenore and how cute they would be together, Kojiro got tired of it. At that point, he would rather be locked in a room with Kaoru than talking about this.
“How about we help you confess to her? No worries, I shall be your wingman. Together, we will overcome this hardship in your life.”
“Stop talking like you are smart, we all know you are as dumb as a rock. Anyway, I unfortunately have to agree with this ape. I’ll always support your decisions Rei, but this is getting obsessive. One day, you will end up so madly in love with her you might start doing illegal things just to impress her.”
“Okay, woah guys. I’m not some creepy stalker, and do you not know how scary it is to ask someone out? Getting rejected would embarrass me to death. I can’t even imagine in.”
“Trust us, Rei. We got your back. Is there anything Lenore has been interested in, or wants to learn?” Kojiro asked.
“I heard she wanted to learn how to skateboard?”
“Excellent! Good thing we all are pretty good skateboarders. I say we invite her to one of the parks and teach her how to skateboard.”
“Oh my gosh, for once your idea was good?! Someone take a photo of this gorilla!” Kaoru laughed, pulling out his phone to take a photo. Kojiro glared at him, which made it even more hilarious.
The bell rang, signaling that it was time to go to lunch. They got out of the closet and headed towards the cafeteria. Kojiro sat down at their table as he waited for his friends. His family are a bunch of chef, so they either make his lunch for school, or he learns new recipes and brings it for lunch. Rei sat down first.
“We should ask her now. Just to get it out of the way and everything.” Kojiro commented as he chowed down on his sandwich.
“No! What if she thinks I’m weird or something,”
“Come on, she won’t think that. Just be positive, we believe in you.” Kojiro winked.
Kaoru sat down with his lunch tray in hand. Today for lunch was some slop that weirdly looked like mashed potatoes. He looked over at Kojiro’s lunch and glared at him. It seemed as if he brought every five star dish on his family’s diner. Kojiro looked up at Kaoru.
“You know Kaoru, just glaring at me will make me not want to share my food with you.”
“Well this isn’t fair! How come your family has a whole secret recipe book-which is super amazing-and I have to sit here and eat this disgusting garbage that will probably come back up in a few hours.”
“Well, that sucks for you. If you need anyone to hold your hair back for you, make sure to call me. Five bucks per minute.” Kojiro snorted, which makes Kaoru slap him hard on his arm.
They continue to bicker for a while before Lenore is walking past their table. Lenore has short, dark purple hair with green eyes that could light up New York City. A white headband rested at the top of her curled hair. There was a mole under her right eye, and a tiny cut line that has been healed over the years on her right eye. She was wearing a navy blue shirt with a white skirt, and Rei couldn’t keep her eyes off of her.
Lenore glanced over at Rei. They held eye contact and it felt as if the world had stopped. Either way, Lenore still kept walking to her table.
The two guys kept bickering back and forth at each other while Rei zoned out, picturing Lenore as she day dreamed. She was so in love with her, it was hard to believe that there was a time where Rei didn’t even know who she was.
The bell rang and students fled the cafeteria and to their next class. Kojiro and Kaoru headed to their PE class as Rei went over to her social studies class.
As class started, she wrote a note down for Lenore, who was sitting next to her, focusing on the board and the teacher’s lecture.
The note read:
Hey, I overheard you talking with your other friend that you wanted to learn how to skateboard. My friends and I know how to skateboard and we were wondering if we could help you out. Milford Park at 4:00 PM?
She slid it to Lenore’s desk and hoped for the best. Rei watched as she read her note. Lenore smiled and wrote back the words, “I’ll be there! :)” on the bottom side of the note. She wanted to jump for joy right there on that stupid table, but she was able to restrain herself. Rei then pulled her phone out and began texting the group chat.
Rei
Guys! I asked Lenore to meet at Milford Park at 4:00 PM today, and she said yes. You guys better show up!!
…
When Lenore went arrived at the skate park, Rei, Kaoru, and Kojiro were already there. The two males were doing a race against each other. It was neck and neck, but in the end Kaoru won.
”Of course I beat this dopey gorilla, I always knew I was better than he was.”
“Shut up! I would’ve won if your hair didn’t get in my face and made me sneeze.”
”You know, during gym class you made the same excuse. I think you are just jealous of my amazingness.”
”Why you-“
”Hi, Lenore! Don’t mind them they are just being total idiots.” Rei commented, turning around to give them a glare.
Lenore smiled in reply. Kojiro and Kaoru walked over with their skateboards. The three of them, well I guess only Rei because Kojiro and Kaoru kept arguing about which skateboarding stance was right, helped Lenore out. She was even able to skate around a bit by herself.
Although her progress was great, she did end up falling a few times and causing scrapes on her arms. Thankfully, Kaoru had his first aid kit and gave it to Rei to help Lenore out. After they cleaned her wounds, Rei gave her the jacket she had been wearing that day in hopes that it would stop her from damaging her arms more.
”Hey, you’re getting the hang of it!” Rei shouted towards Lenore. “Soon you will be able to do tricks like these,”
Rei started to skate at a decent speed towards a ramp and the skateboard and her was up in the air. Lenore looked at her in awe. Her heart started to race without her realizing it until it hurt so bad she had to clutch her chest. This was the new discovery of love towards Rei.
”Please, I could do better.” Kaoru mumbled, which got him a well deserved shove from Kojiro.
After a while, everyone went their separate ways until they meet each other at school the next day. That night, Lenore stared up at her ceiling and the only thing she could picture was Rei. From that day forward, the trio became a group, and Lenore was so excited to learn more about Rei and hopefully become the girl of her dreams.
