Work Text:

The day was quiet now that the thunder of gunfire no longer rolled across the countryside, no more bullets would kill, and no one else would die. Peace would return to the fields and heaths of Europe; yes, truly, she could finally find peace.

The wind blew gently, causing the grass on the heath to brush against her knees. Here, far away from the front, it was almost possible to forget the horrors. Especially when she watched Marsha running through the grass in front of her. Just a moment ago, the medic had thrown dirt at Sentinel to take revenge on her.

She paused briefly and watched her go, seeing how happy she was. The soldier put one foot in front of the other, slowly at first, then faster and faster, until she was almost sprinting. Marsha was getting closer and closer.

But suddenly the young woman stopped and turned around. Sentinel would have had no chance to brake in time, so she rushed forward, making a pitiful attempt to avoid Marsha. She hit the taller woman, and it knocked them both to the ground.

A few plants tickled her face, reminding her of the presence of nature, of the wind. She had landed surprisingly softly on Marsha, who had turned her head to one side and covered her face with her armoured arm.

The gargoyle paused and listened. A slight whisper of the wind, leaves rustling, a mill creaking. And then, a soft laugh beneath her, gentle and adorable. Her long hair had come loose and now hung like a curtain around her face, cutting her and Marsha off from the rest of the world.

A hand made its way onto Sentinel's back, patted her briefly, then wrapped around her waist, holding her tight. The touch was softer than the last time the two women had met. Hatred, anger, confusion and fear had driven them that day. Blood and violence had marked their time together, but now everything was about to change.

Sentinel was snapped out of her thoughts as she felt a scarred hand on her cheek. Marsha was now looking at her again, a finger of her glove still in her mouth. She had to use her mouth to help her take it off, as her right arm was still around Sentinel's waist.

The woman just kept smiling, not uttering any words. The world around them fell silent, as if nature itself was trying to listen. No sounds reached her anymore, only gentle breathing and her own heartbeat, which was pounding loudly in her ears. Her face felt warm as she looked at Marsha.

Her features were gentle, her eyes so tired from all the pain, but still with an adorable smile on her lips. But this time it was different. One look into her bright blue eyes told Sentinel everything she needed to know.

She released the hand she was using to support herself and removed the glove from Marsha's face. The hand on her face moved to her neck and lightly rubbed it.

The smaller woman paused, unsure of the situation. What was she supposed to do next? As if she had lost control of her body, her hand rested on Marsha's cheek, and her thumb brushed over the medic's lips.

"So gentle" was the first thought that came to her mind as she slowly leaned down, moving closer to her and closing the gap between them. Now they were nose to nose, looking deep into each other's eyes.

But it turned out to be Marsha, not her, who closed the distance between them completely. Her lips felt soft as they touched those of the woman beneath her. It wasn't much, maybe just a small, brief touch, but for Sentinel? Everything.

She got goosebumps all over her body when they separated. They smiled at each other; all the fear and pain vanished. There were only the two of them; no one else mattered anymore. Sentinel wanted to stay by Marsha's side forever; no matter where she went, she would follow.

She reached for the hand that had lost its glove and intertwined her fingers as she lowered herself once more to kiss Marsha, who was flushed bright red.
