Work Text:

Creeeeak!

Kurt pushes the front door open, balancing his bag and a box from his group project meeting, and mumbles something about how he was going to put some oil on the hinges, and keeps forgetting, but mostly there’s just one thing he wants. “Tarzan! I’m hom—”

He freezes.

Dave is standing in the middle of the apartment like a mountain that’s been moved. Dressed in a navy suit. Wearing the tie Kurt gave him last year that Dave didn’t love but was gracious about anyway.

Kurt drops his messenger bag with a thud, his eyes darting up and down Dave from his polished shoes to… Did he get his hair cut today? “Babe… What is going on? I thought we—”

“I—” Dave fidgets with his tie, then rubs his palms over his pockets. His hands feel awkward with nothing to do. “I made a reservation for us. For… A really fancy dinner.”

Kurt blinks. “Oh, god, honey… You’re not going to tell me you’re dying or something, are you?” His eyes are already watery.

“What! God, no! I’ve never been healthier!” Dave laughs, but he’s shaking a bit now, nervous as hell. “This is… I just wanted to do something nice for you.”

“I thought we were doing an end-of-season dinner thing with coach and the team.”

“I lied.” Dave’s face blooms pink, and red tinges his ears, looking slightly guilty but mostly proud. He shrugs and bites his lip once, letting it slip through his teeth. “You’ve just… been amazing. Season’s over, and I wanted to celebrate you and say thanks for all your support and—I just—I just—I wanted it to be a surprise. And not the kind where you’d feel pressured, but the good kind, like—”

Kurt is across the room in less than three strides and throws himself into Dave’s arms, smashing their lips together, moaning into it. Dave stumbles back half a step from the force of it, catching them both, and his hands go instinctively around Kurt’s waist, then lower, gripping his thighs as he lifts him with ease as Kurt wraps around him like it’s always where he’s meant to be. His lips don’t break from Dave's for even a second; it’s passionate and full of the love they’ve so carefully built between them.

When they finally part just slightly, Kurt’s breath catches on a laugh, and he leans his forehead against Dave’s. “You look so fucking hot right now, I can’t even think!”

Dave huffs out a startled laugh, still holding him like it’s nothing.

“You wore the tie,” Kurt says, kissing Dave’s cheek.

“You bought the tie.”

They laugh into each other’s mouths, and Dave kisses him again, this time it’s much slower, and Kurt melts into him, threading his fingers into the collar of Dave’s jacket as the room spins a little. “I love you.”

“I love you, too, Dimples!”

Kurt slips down, standing on his feet again, brushing his lips along Dave’s jaw. “You don’t have to do big things to thank me, honey. You do in a million small ways all the time. Still, I want you to know how much I appreciate how thoughtful you were about all of this.”

“I wanted to, Kurt. You’re… God. You’re just so amazing, and sometimes I can’t believe I get to be yours.” He kisses the top of Kurt’s head. “I just wanted to… Try to make you feel appreciated.”

Kurt pulls back at that. “I do! And I love being yours, too. You know that, right?”

Dave nods and kisses the tip of Kurt's nose. “Except now this is the part where I tell you that you have 35 minutes to get ready.”

“Dave!” Kurt says, appalled, swiftly kissing him on the cheek and rushing to the bedroom with Dave's amused laughter behind him.

Thirty minutes later, Kurt walks out of their bedroom in a deep navy button-down with tiny gold star cufflinks that match the threads of Dave’s tie. His hair is perfectly coiffed, and there’s cologne wafting from him that Dave definitely notices.

He whistles low under his breath. “You trying to kill me before we even get to dinner?”

Kurt walks over and leans close to smooth Dave’s lapel playfully. “I figured if you were gonna wear the tie, I had to bring my A-game.”

“You brought an entire alphabet, babe.”

Kurt's melodic laughter fills the room, and he kisses Dave’s cheek again. “Then let’s get out of here before you pin me to the wall or start quoting love poems at me.”

“Too late,” Dave beams at him, playing one of their favorite silliest, most ridiculous games that Kurt pretends to loathe but secretly loves. “Roses are red…”

“Oh god. Here we go.”

“…violets are blue…”

“David!”

“…I’m starving and so are you.”

Kurt groans, but lets Dave open the door for him, giving him another kiss. “I’m dating a right guard with a really bad poetry kink,” he mutters as they step into the hallway.

Dave grins, locking the apartment behind them. “No complaints when I rhyme dessert with flirt later.”

Kurt can’t help but laugh.

Dave reaches for Kurt’s hand and threads their fingers together, squeezing them. “Ready?”

Kurt squeezes back. “Ready for anything with you. I'm so excited to spend a night with just us all dressed up like this.”

“Me, too.”
