Work Text:

Getting in trouble with their mom is not how Dante wanted that to go. He sits on his bed with his arms crossed. He got the room to 'calm down in' while Vergil..Vergil was probably off reading his dumb book by that stupid tree again!

It felt..okay maybe not totally unfair, but still unfair in some way because Dante really didn't mean to shove Vergil across the room and knock over the couch! He really did feel bad about that! At least at first, back when he thought he had hurt his brother by accident. Then stupid Vergil goes and throws him next!

Dante groans and falls back onto his bed. A quiet thought enters his mind, uttering to him how terribly sad it would be if that was the last thing they ever did together. Fight. Not even a fun one at that. It sends a shiver down his mind and he quickly tries to dismiss it. Its such a stupid thought. He is not even sure why he thought it in the first place. Maybe he did still feel a little guilty about it after all..

He lifts his head up when he hears the door open. Hoping his mother would step through and assure him once again that all is well and not to worry his precious little head. That hope dies when he sees that it is his brother and instantly the two scowl at each other. Vergil rolls his eyes and walks over to his own bed while Dante drops his head back onto his own with annoyance. All concern over guilt vanishing instantly.

" Are you actually still upset? " comes Vergil's pretentious but high voice.

Dante huffs and rolls onto his side so he can look at his dumb brother. " No. Are you? "

Vergil blinks at him before looking down at the book in his hands. He rubs his thumb over the cover. " No. "

" Good. "

" Yeah. "

" I can't believe you hit me though. " Dante huffs.

The eyebrows on Vergil's face furrow deeply before he shoots a glare at Dante. " You shoved me first! " he corrects.

Dante tosses his arms into the air. " Again, I didn't mean to! "

" So why did you even bring it up?! " Vergil shoots back, his frustration back in full force.

The boy in red and black isn't sure himself. Perhaps arguing it out with his brother felt right. Although as he wracks his brain for a more 'logical' reason that Vergil would prefer, he sort of finds one. Its really not all that logical at all and his arms flop back onto the bed as an outward response.

" I have been trying to get you to play with me all day.." Dante grumbles out. " I got one fight out of you and it got me in trouble. "

The words settle heavily on Vergil's mind. His expression lightens and he turns his gaze away. All kinds of worthy excuses enter his mind. Although, after what Dante pulled earlier, he wasn't really seeking out any kind of forgiveness. Still..when Dante gets all upset like that, he feels like he should somehow fix it. Is that not his duty as the older brother?

" I'll play with you tomorrow. "

Whatever disappoints and grievances Dante may have felt in previous moments evaporate. He sits up impossibly fast and smiles like the sun. " For real?! "

Vergil almost regrets his words immediately but sighs and rolls his eyes. Doing his best to hide his own smile. " I'm not lying. "

" Good! Cause I woulda bugged you to do it anyway! "

That is something Vergil wholeheartedly believes Dante would do. He playfully rolls his eyes and sits on his own bed. He reaches over and slips his book into the nightstand drawer.

" Do you think mom is still mad at us? "

Vergil shakes his head. " No. She is too nice for that. "

He quietly neglects to inform Dante that he already asked her if she was. Dante would never let it down if he knew that Vergil had ran to verify with her before coming to bed.

" Now get ready for bed before she has another reason to be cross with us. " Vergil practically orders, pj's in hand.

Dante scoffs, letting his arms cross behind his head to act like a pillow, despite already resting on one. Kicking one leg onto the other so he can bounce it.

" I'm fine like this though. "

Vergil smirks at him. " Is that so? So should I tell her that this will be the second day you didn't clean up? Oh wait, " he taps his chin, " She'll notice when you demand a kiss on the head after another story huh-"

" Okay okay okay I'm going! " Dante cries, covering his ears, as he leaps from his bed and out the door of their shared bedroom.

Vergil quietly snickers at his brother's retreating form. Yes. He'll tease him endlessly about this tomorrow.

A couple hours pass and Dante wakes from his sleep to the sounds of someone opening the bedroom door. He blinks his heavy eyes, trying to get a clear look. He almost thinks that its his father before realizing how small the form truly is. He blinks and rubs at his eyes as he sits up.

" Vergil? " he asks out with a yawn.

The figure at the door freezes. Slowly Vergil turns to look at his brother. " Shh..go back to sleep Dante. "

" Where are you going? Can I come? "

The darkness of the room hides away the utter twitching that comes from Vergil's left eye. He is sort of baffled that his brother does not grasp the fact that he is being sneaky because of him! He resists being obvious with his annoyance, all it would do is make Dante even more likely to follow, which will tell their mother exactly where they are. He can't get in trouble again tonight. So he'll have to shake him off.

" I'm just getting a drink. You don't need to try and win against me at that. " he says in a mutter.

Dante thinks about it and smiles. " I really could though! "

Vergil scoffs. " Just go back to bed, Dante. " He slips through the crack in the door he was trying to make. " I'll be right back. "

Perhaps..if Dante knew what was to come, he would not have simply laughed and laid back down in his bed. Perhaps he would have chased after his brother and he could have somehow helped him. Maybe his brother would not have been surrounded. Maybe-Maybe he would have been able to prevent this future?

Dante peers up at the videos playing on the screens. They depict a figure, that he has been told is his brother, slicing through men with ease. He sports a long blue coat and his hair is smoothed back. That copy cat demon from the diner wasn't so far off after all. His throat tightens and his chest burns.

Because he had a living source to copy. His mind whispers.

It doesn't matter. Not anymore. He has to get to Vergil. This time he will not let anything stop him. Even if he has to play by more complicated rules. Sure. Alright. Whatever. Fine by him. He's not the naive boy he once was. Not anymore. He'll get his fight.

Notes:

Every version of Dante comes with a survivor's guilt package :)
