Chapter 1: end of it all

Chapter Text

Kyuhyun redialed the number flashing on the stereo.

For the seventh time.

“Pick up pick up pick up,”

A blaring horn made him swerve into another lane in time before he crashed into a pickup truck.

Someone cussed loudly at him from a passing car.

Nothing registered.

The call went to voicemail yet again.

“Heechul please pick up"

He remembered the sound of Heechul’s voice during their call last night.

I can’t do this anymore... I can’t go on like this. I’m going to put an end to it

Kyuhyun dialed again.

Voicemail.

Please be okay. Please be okay.

Kyuhyun turned into Heechul’s neighborhood and the moment he reached the building, he hit the brakes so hard the car jerked.

Red and blue lights flashed across his windshield.

Two patrol cars. Lots of policemen. Yellow tape stretched across the lobby entrance. Officers blocked the crowd from entering.

Kyuhyun tripped over his feet as he rushed out of the car, squeezing through the wave of people to reach the officer. “What—what happened?! There’s someone I know in this building—I’ve been trying to reach him, he’s not answering—”

“Sir, you can’t go in”

“Was it… was there a fire? A break-in? I just—please tell me what happened—”

“There’s been a murder in one of the apartments”

Kyuhyun’s breath stilled.

“…A murder?”

“We’re still securing the scene,” the officer continued. “Residents aren’t allowed inside until forensics clears it.”

“Can you—please—just tell me which apartment?”

The officer looked him over, as if deciding whether to say it.

“704, sir”

Kyuhyun froze. The world around him reducing to an incoherent mumble like he was drowning.

704.

Heechul’s apartment.

“No…. please…. please, no”
