Work Text:
“Why me?”
You asked the question to the blonde man sitting beside you. It was late evening; the sun had already gone down, and the window you sat by spilled soft moonlight across the room. You could see the outline of Henry’s side profile as he slowly turned to face you.
“Pardon?” he said while slightly furrowing his brow as if you were asking something absurd. The moonlight made him look ethereal, highlighting his blue eyes and plump lips.
“I want to know why did you chose me? Out of everyone?” You repeated yourself, this time adding the context. You’ve been thinking about it for quite a while now, well since the moment you met Henry. What would a man like him - especially one with superpowers - see in you? It’s not that you feel less than he does, but by putting two and two together, it would make more sense if someone like him chose another person with superpowers. It would be fair. Balanced. An equilibrium.
He looked at you intently, gazing into your eyes with a soft look as if he were trying to peer into the machinery of your mind. “Well…” he murmured in a soothing voice as he glanced down for a moment. “Do you want me to list off the reasons why?” When he looked back up, there was a tired, tender smile on his lips and a slight rasp to his voice - late-night evidence that he was growing weary.
“Yes” you said almost too excitedly, well can you blame yourself really? You loved being perceived; you loved being seen “Yes, please.” you grasped his bicep with your hands.
You could faintly hear how he exhaled through his nostrils, holding back an affectionate laugh.Henry loved when you begged.
He took your hands in his, thumb gently caressing your knuckles “Well, first of all, you’re smart, really smart and so insightful” He started “Out of everyone I’ve met you’re by far smarter than all of them. I've never had to explain myself, since you always understood everything, every single time. It’s like you read my mind, really”
Henry placed his hand on the side of your face, his thumb now grazing your cheekbone. “Secondly, you are much different than others, there’s something special about you that I can’t quite put my finger on. It’s like I finally met someone whole and exceptional”
He leaned into you slightly, his face inching closer to yours. “You’re the only human I cherish - the only one I care for. No one else matters besides you” With that, he closed the last inch between you, his lips finding yours.
Whether his confession was real or merely another thread he pulled tight around you, you chose to believe him.
