Chapter 1: Off my mind

Chapter Text

Shoji rested in the dorm's communal kitchen in silence. He was leant against the countertop, wearing a large beige coloured hoodie covering a light blue tank top and paired with dark blue shorts, his arms resting casually behind him. A quick sigh into his mask tore his eyes away from his current goal. Though the distraction was, in part, welcomed as it gave him a break from the task at hand. Gazing longingly from across the room was a lot more difficult than one would expect. His eyes rose once more to the figure that was recorded in his mind's eye and replayed on the daily. Tokoyami, dressed in a simple black shirt with a rock band logo and slim black pants and a silver waist chain decorating it, sat peculiarly on a chair in the living room. He always seemed to be perching rather than sitting normally. He was chatting, casually, with their fellow classmates leaning against Ojiro who occupied the middle of the chair. He felt his heart flutter, his calm expression only remaining due to his mask that covered the lower half of his face. 'Maybe it would be better to look away,' he thought. 'To not stare at him so obviously.' It would do him no good.

The figure of his feathered friend had become an inevitable sight. Each and every blink, resting if the eyes or even an unexpected sneeze gave way to the silhouette of his bird like appearance. The subtle curve on his beak when he smiled, the soft glow under his feathers as he blushed, the slight pull on his skin of his neck from his chokers. All details recalled with perfect accuracy without a purpose. Shoji grabbed a nearby kitchen towel from the counter behind him. The weather had been getting colder lately but the heat wasn’t the reason for the sweat that prickled his forehead right now. He has decided ,with great difficulty, that he couldn’t deal with these feelings that were built up inside him anymore. 'Today I will face him,' Shoji thought, hyping himself up as his confidence rose with his body as he stood up straight off of the counter and began to make his way from the kitchen towards the common room, tossing the now damp towel onto the side as he did so.

Tokoyami was sitting comfortably and casually on the side of an armchair. He often found himself in such ‘strange’ sitting positions but in truth they were just more comfortable for him. Ojiro, Tokoyami’s blonde and plain faced classmate, occupied the main part of the chair beside him. Kaminari, another classmate, sat next to the chair fiddling with the fur that decorated the end of Ojiro’s tail. Todoroki, a third classmate, stood nearby the trio having just arrived in the common area and from his demeanor and his avoidance in settling into a seat he likely didn’t plan to stay long. The bird headed hero had been rather tired recently. He straightened his body uncomfortably attempting to take some pressure off of his back. His injuries from the war had developed a tendency to flare up now and again. Many of his class have similar issues so there was support provided by UA. 'I’ll get it checked later,' Tokoyami thought to himself, zoning out of the ongoing conversation as a large but familiar silhouette washes over him. He looks up, being snapped out of his inner thoughts as the figure looms overhead. A slight grin tugs at the corner of his mouth as he easily recognizes Shoji. No one else living in the 3A Alliance has quite the same… build.

“Tokoyami hey, Can I talk to you… in private?” Shoji asks, his voice smooth and moderate voice muffled from behind his face mask. His eyes shift to the side nervously as he finishes his request in a manner that almost seemed shy. The others looked between each other as their conversation came to a halt with an air of silent intrigue. Tokoyami looked up at Shoji and gave a nonchalant shrug before rising to his feet from the arm of the chair and giving a quick reply. “Alright.” Their hands slip into the narrow pockets of his pants. They join Shoji in walking out of the room being followed by the curious eyes of their classmates. He strutted slightly with his posture leant forward as he followed his multi armed class up to the 1st floor a quick smirk accessorised by a blush and a mischievous shining in his eyes betraying his usual cool headed, imperceptible demeanor. The view from following Shoji up the stairs was also not going unappreciated even if it did make his heart beat a little out of sync.

Shoji led his classmate up into a free space, one wall dominated by windows letting in the late afternoon light of the autumn day, on the 1st floor away from inquisitive eyes and ears. He allowed his eyes to crawl over the view. The concrete and potted trees stretched until the high tech security fence surrounding UA high. “Hey earth to Shoji.” Tokoyami’s soft tones bring his attention back to the present as a slim, pale hand waves in front of his face gently. “What is it that you wanted to talk about with me?” He asks, leaning from Shoji’s peripheral vision into the middle of his view. Their dark feathers glowing elegantly from the light cascading from the windows as their crimson pupils vaguely reflect the outline of Shoji’s body.

Mina Ashido, yet another hero student, bounces musically down the halls of the 2A dorm with her frog-like friend Tsuyu Asui. She was in very casual wear, loose gray joggers and a long sleeve black jumper, an outfit suited to the weather that was steadily getting colder by the day. The two had just gotten back from a trip to a nearby diner that specialised in flavourful cold drinks. Mina had attained a very on brand strawberry milkshake with the was happily sipping as the two neared the larger window section of the hall just before the stairs. As they got closer they heard muffled yet serious voices coming from around the corner and so slowed their pace and hugged the wall trying to listen in.

Tokoyami took several instinctive steps back as Shoji began to approach him until his back was pressed up against the wall. He held up their forearms creating a boundary in front of him as his upper arms also pressed against the wall as his large friend loomed over him. Shoji’s hand on his left middle arm as Shoji, flustered by his own actions, averted his direct gaze away from Tokoyami as a deep blush crept above his mask to the uncovered portions of his face. “There’s no real easy way for me to say this," he starts.” He starts, speaking from the orifice at the end of his arm. “But I just cannot get you off my mind, Fumikage Tokoyami.” He proclaims using another of his hands to try and pull his mask higher up on his face. Tokoyami feels his heart flutter out of rhythm at the use of his full name in such a heartfelt manner and his face begins to glow under his dark feather. He opens his mouth with every intention of giving his reply quickly but can only manage to choke a short exhale of air in shock.

Mina’s mouth goes agape as she and Tsuyu watch the scene from around the hallways corner out if their classmates view. She had actually almost let out an audible gasp as she had seen the two in such a position but Tsuyu had cleverly silenced her with a swift hand to cover her mouth. The two now watched with anticipation as the scene unfolded before them. 'OH MY GOD AN ACTUAL LIVE CONFESSION! Between two of the most stoic members of class no less!' Mina’s thought as she staved off the need to even blink as to not miss a thing. She also fumbled in the pockets of her pants pulling out her pink cased phone snapping some evidence of the crucial, adorable moment.
