Work Text:
Dazai Osamu was feeling mischievous today.
You see, Dazai had been slowly losing his mind (and his will to live) over the past few days. Why you may ask? Well because his beloved Chuuya had been sent on an international mission for a week, leaving Dazai alone to take care of himself and their daughter.
Admittedly leaving Dazai alone probably wasn't the greatest idea on Chuuya’s part, but he didn't really have a choice on when Mori sent him on missions, or what they were.
So Dazai had woken up that day, 5 days after Chuuya had left and decided to annoy his colleagues!
Dazai, Yosano, Ranpo:
Dazai: hey so what if i brought ochako to the agency
Yosano: why
Dazai: i need enrichment
Ranpo: is that code for you need to break more of kunikidas pens
Dazai: i think you know the answer to that
Yosano: fuck it sure
Yosano: we don’t really have any missions today
Ranpo: you know what my answer is gonna be
Dazai: i knew i could rely on you guys to enable my behaviour
Yosano: don’t put it like that 😭
Dazai, now fully dressed, quietly cracked the door open to ochako’s room. The light purple curtains were slightly ajar, casting a ray of sunlight across her bed. Dazai softly padded over to her bed, taking a seat on the edge.
“‘Chako, sweetheart…” Dazai whispered, gently shaking her shoulder in an attempt to wake her up.
“Mmm…” the little girl cracked an eye open to see who was waking her up. Daazai ran his fingers through her hair as she rubbed her eyes and sat up.
“Good morning…” He tenderly smiled as Ochako climbed onto Dazai’s lap to bury her face in his chest. She very much wasn’t a morning person, similar to her parents.
“C’mon ‘chako… I know you don’t like the mornings but you gotta get ready.”
“Don’ wanna…” Ochako mumbled, her voice muffled by the fabric of his waistcoat.
“I’m bringing you to the agency today, don’t you wanna see auntie Sano and uncle Ranpo?” Dazai softly laughed when she visibly lit up at the mention of Yosano and Ranpo.
Dazai let Ochako pick her outfit today. Usually Chuuya dressed her, but since he wasn’t here today, and as much as he wished he did, Dazai didn’t have the mental strength to pick her an outfit.
Luckily, it appeared Chuuya’s fashion sense had rubbed off on her. She chose a white long sleeved dress to put under a light blue crocheted sweater vest. She also picked black tights and fluffy white socks to layer on top of them. Dazai helped her get dressed and tied the laces on her shoes, which was her favourite pair, the colour a bright red. She ran back over to him from her “hair box”, which was a small wicker basket which had all her hair ties and hair clips in it;. She held up a few bright red cherry red and dark navy blue hair clips and asked him to put them in her hair, which he happily did.
Dazai was sure she’d be fine, but he grabbed her bright red beanie from the coat rack by the door as they left the house. Once they stepped out the door they were hit by the cold November air. Despite it only being early November, light snowfall had already begun to fall, which Ochako had been very excited about.
The two walked down the street towards the agency, Ochako going back and forth between skipping down the sidewalk and stepping perfectly in the centre of the pavers when they became smaller bricks (it did slow them down whenever she did that but Dazai didn’t really mind).
Once the agency building was within sight, Ochako stopped walking and asked to be carried instead, which did admittedly make getting to the agency much faster.
He made his way up the stairs to the agency and burst open the door.
Kunikida and Atsushi just stared at Dazai and Ochako. Tanizaki might’ve not even noticed Dazai entering the agency (he was never really aware of anything going on when it was early). Kyouka and Kenji weren’t in the agency office right now it seemed, and Ranpo had looked up from his phone when Dazai entered the room. Dazai assumed he’d been texting their group chat, if the notification sounds he’d been getting from his back pocket was any indication.
“Good morning!” Dazai greeted Atsushi and Kunikida as he walked over to his desk as if nothing was different than usual.
“Is, is that your daughter Dazai-san?” Atsushi asked, bewildered at why Dazai would bring his daughter to the agency.
“Correct Atsushi-kun!” He sat down on his chair, Ochako still resting on his hip, but she was much more interested in looking at the interior of the agency compared to the people in it.
“Why would you bring your daughter here Dazai???” Kunikida asked, equally baffled as Atsushi.
“Why not!”
“I can think of several reasons why not.” Atsushi spoke, looking at him blankly.
Dazai felt Ochako try to wiggle out of his arms. He let her go as he could guess where she wanted to go. His presumption was proved correct when she ran over to Ranpo’s desk, putting her arms up and asking him to pick her up.
Tanizaki eventually noticed the small child that was now sitting next to Ranpo on his desk. Atsushi had ranted to him about it when he learned Dazai had a daughter, and he could put two and two together to guess that the little girl was Dazai’s. He chose not to engage in this, as whenever he got involved with something dazai related it never ended well.
Naomi had briefly come over to obsess over how cute the little girl was, but Dazai had intervened at some point when Ochako had gotten overwhelmed by Naomi’s antics.
A client had showed up sometime during the day and required their help, so they sent Dazai, Kunikida and Atsushi out.
When they returned Dazai saw that Ranpo and Ochako were no longer at his desk, but he had a feeling he knew where they were.
He walked over to the infirmary and leant against the doorway quietly. Yosano had clearly been reorganising a few of the files she had in her drawers as there were several fabric binders lying on her desk. But she had disregarded her previous task to watch Ochako as she drew while she chatted with Ranpo.
Ochako looked up towards the door, feeling that someone had been watching them. She lit up when she saw Dazai and jumped out of her seat.
“Dada!!” She ran over to him, jumping up and down with her arms up. Dazai knelt down to her level to let her hug him, giving her a kiss on the top of her head.
“I assume the mission went well?” Yosano asked from her chair at her desk.
“Yea, we took care of everything!”
Dazai was pulled over to Yosano’s desk to look at all of Ochako’s drawings.
Atsushi had quickly become fond of Ochako. He’d transformed one of his hands into the tiger’s paws so she could touch the fur. She’d been very excited about him being a cat. He’d mumbled something about how he wasn’t a cat but instead a tiger, but he didn’t put up much of a fight about it. She wasn’t even 5 after all.
Even Kunikida had begun to like her presence. He still found it incredibly irresponsible of Dazai to bring her to the agency, but he couldn’t deny that she was a good kid and Dazai had at least done a good job at raising her.
Even though nothing could truly make Dazai feel better other than Chuuya returning from his mission, seeing the people that he considered as family take a liking to his daughter definitely helped make him feel better.
