boy mosquito

Summary:

- Did you know that the mosquitoes biting you are always girls?

Greg Heffley was dead-set on his goals: being rich, famous and having a girlfriend. Nothing stopped him. For years, he'd been pushing towards them, not caring for any disturbances. Anything could be fixed.

Maybe except for one issue. Rowley Jefferson.
Like some insect, the kid's been hanging around him for years, in dreams and reality, always there, unchangeable. And after 6th grade ended? Good God. The thought of Rowley constantly followed and bit him every second of the day, twenty four per seven.

The same as the thought of Greg kept haunting Rowley two houses away. His horrible best friend, always there, always waspy, trying to change him for better or worse. And yet, even with all that, and his need to be the best, to listen to his parents' warnings... he still thinks of him sickeningly fondly.

It's a huge entangled issue for both of them and it takes two to resolve and balance it, to perhaps even better what they've built so far. Or maybe it had always been territory never to breach, and what awaits them will be even deadlier than some measly Cheese Touch?

Chapter 1: Pre-story note

Chapter Text

This is it, the story I've always wanted to write. Since I got utterly fixated on Growley, my biggest dream was to write something big, complex, crazy long and crazy detailed about it, so that the possible future fans of it find it and think "wait, someone also loved it". "There's something I wanted, and hey, it's here!". When I was way younger - like the age of the characters here - I was a huge Wattpad reader, a lover of every niche fucked-up ship you could muster. I always found my big crackship Bibles that made me even happier and even crazier on said ship. It helped a lot. I thought I could do the same now. I could be that person for someone else, maybe.

And also be really self-indulgent, by the way.

Life-story aside, this is also my attempt to write canon-compliant Growley. Sure, if you think about it, it's near impossible to incorporate it and not make it look out of place or nonsense, but there are certain clues that I think help a lot in tying it in - for example, the very sweet ending of first book (and first animated and live-action movies, too) and how it dissolves into a way less cute relationship between Greg and Rowley in Rodrick Rules without many apparent reasons (that's the huge drive for the first part of the fanfic). These will definitely be discussed and explained.

I tried my best to interpret the characters close to canon and make dates and days overlap correctly with the ones in books (so there are no chronological errors or misinterpretations). For sure there will be a bunch of errors - I can definitely get some characteristics wrong or put the wrong day of the week when describing something, but I hope these won't be giant jarring issues that make you go "he would not fucking say that, she wouldn't do that ever". Keep in mind that the events happening here will be very strictly taken from the book - if you see that some things are not like in the movies or musical, or even go against the plotlines of these... that's gonna be self-explanatory. It's book-verse. I may make some movie references to not bore movie fans, but as I am mostly book-focused (with some possible elements taken from Funbrain/pre-OG version - it's the one you can find on the Internet Archive and was a 1200+ pages long webcomic with more mature themes and plot alterations, and is basically the blueprint for the published books).

It's going to have some headcanons or will add self-created context to certain scenes - but I will try to keep it to minimum and to only explain certain plot loopholes/illogicalities, or to expand on characters (like some aspects of Rowley's). Also another thing - if you know me from Twitter or Tumblr, you may know that my designs for DOAWK characters are... uh, very different, and I really mean different, from the usually approved ones.

I almost always write my fanfics with these in mind (this one is no exception), but to make this one universal and allow free interpretation, any descriptors of hair color (mostly focusing on that) will be reduced to things like "light/dark" or "lighter/darker" instead of specifying if character A has blonde, red or brown hair.

Last thing - I really suggest to read this and check events with the books, like keep it on your lap or next to the screen, open, when reading. I won't go and write down the same things Greg did, because well, we already have a description of that. That's why this fanfic shall omit some of the information already written down in the entries and focus on the days that are not logged in by Greg.

And a post-scriptum - yeah, I know, I talk a lot - there may be gramatical errors. If I beta stuff, I beta it like a half-blind goldfish with an attention span of a newborn, so I still leave multiple oopsies in the text - and most of the time I just wing everything and assume it's all fine. I also am not a native English speaker (I'm Polish) and I still make tons of mistakes, some out of hate for the language and some out of my lack of knowledge. Go easy on me if there's any you notice. I'll try my best to make it coherent, gramatically correct and understandable.

Finishing this - finally! - I do really hope you'll like it. Simple as it is. I hope it's as enjoyable to you as it is for me.
