Work Text:

Daria awoke in the early morning dawn and realized this morning was very unusual. First, she was naked. Second, she was in Jane's bed. Third, she wasn't alone. Fourth, if sex with another girl counted, she wasn't a virgin anymore. And neither was Jane.

Lying there in Jane's arms she recalled the events of last night. A flashback, how cliché, she thought as she ruminated over last night's goings on.

"You know what sucks?" Jane asked from behind her easel in the far corner of her dorm room.

"Our love lives?" Daria deadpanned, not taking her eyes off the newest Melody Powers story she was writing on her laptop.

"Exactly!" Jane said, jabbing her brush into the canvas, adding a spot of ocher to latest painting. "When was the last time you got asked out on a date?"

"Wait," Jane interrupted as Daria started answer, "we both know the answer to that."

"I might have been asked," Daria protested, turning to face her best friend. "I don't tell you everything."

"Look, mon cherie, we both know you don't exactly come off as available. Your ensemble practically screams 'they'll never find the bodies'."

"Gee, thanks for the moral support," Daria said.

"So, have you?" Jane asked, her left eyebrow raised almost to her hairline.

"No," Daria admitted. A semester and a half and not one guy showed any interest at all. How pathetic. She knew she could try asking a guy out, but the idea terrified her. Rejection scared her more than loneliness.

"Guess how many times I’ve been asked out this semester? Wanna guess? No? Fine, I'll tell you. None. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Big freaking goose egg." Jane said as she rinsed the paint from her brush and flung it into the tray on her easel.

"Yesterday I asked Brian down the hall out. He didn't just turn me down, he got angry with me," she continued, walking from behind her easel and hanging her smock on a coat hook.

"For what?" Daria asked.

"For cheating on you!"

"What!?" Daria asked, trying not to spray her badly timed sip of soda all over the paint-stained carpet.

"Yeah," Jane said, sitting heavily on the edge of her bed. "Everyone thinks we're dating."

"Who?"

"Everyone. Brian, Steve, Tad, Wendy, Marcus, the entire third floor of the dorm, everybody. Probably your roommate as well. No, Megan definitely thinks we're dating." Jane said.

"Why?" Daria said incredulously.

"You've spent every weekend of the semester here. From after class on Friday afternoon to after breakfast Monday morning."

"My roommate is an airhead and yours is secretly living with her history professor," Daria countered.

"You've taken over her side of the room. You use her key, her meal card, you even sleep in her bed. If our campuses were closer together you'd have moved in by now," Jane said.

"I'm not saying you're doing anything wrong," Jane continued, raising her hand to stop Daria from defending herself. "Just telling you what other people are seeing. Minus the not-sleep-in-my-bed part."

"So what do we do, wear t-shirts with 'Sorry girls, I'm straight' on them? Or 'I'm not with her, honest'?" Daria complained.

"Maybe we don't fight it," Jane said, trying hide her sudden nervousness. "Maybe we, um, I don't know, lean into it."

It took Daria a moment to parse what Jane had just said. "You mean we date, each-other? You do remember we're both straight, don't you?"

"I always thought I was. Not so sure anymore," Jane said.

"Because other people think we make a cute couple?" Daria asked.

Jane just stared at the floor as she nervously picked at her fingernails. She looked Daria in the eye.

"It wouldn't be the worst dating choice we've made," Jane said, trying to add some levity to what had become a tense conversation.

"Okay, let's settle this," Daria said, standing up and motioning Jane to do the same. She took Jane's face in her hands and kissed her.

She had intended to show Jane how implausible a romantic relationship between them would be. She was not prepared for that first kiss. The instant their lips touched her awareness contracted to just the feel of Jane's lips on hers: the warmth, the softness, the tiny ridges, the slight imperfections. Her brain burned that moment so deep in her memory she would never forget it. Kissing Tom had never been like this.

When the kiss ended her skin was alive in a way she'd never felt before. Goosebumps ran down from head to toe. Her nipples were so hard they ached. As for what was going on down there, she wasn't going to dwell on that just yet. Looking at Jane's face she knew Jane was feeling the same thing she was.

They embraced and kissed each other over and over, passion building with each kiss. She felt Jane's tongue crave entrance to her mouth and she gave it. Soon their clothes were scattered around the floor of Jane's dorm room and they fell on Jane's bed.

Before this Daria had never understood the draw of sex. The desire. The yearning. The genetic need to join, to become one, to merge.

For the next hour they explored each-other, reveled in each-other, devoured each-other. Sometimes gently, sometimes fiercely, but always with love. There wasn't a square inch of skin they hadn't kissed, licked, bit, or sucked on. Bright red lipstick was smeared from Daria's lips to just above her navel. By morning Jane would be sporting a dark purple bite mark on her left collarbone.

Exhausted, sated, and knowing that neither of them could survive another orgasm, they crawled under the covers and fell asleep.

~~~~~~~~~
Daria's reverie was interrupted by Jane waking up behind her.
"Hmmmm," Jane purred as she pulled Daria close and kissed the back of her ear. "Any regrets?"
"No," said Daria, rolling over to face Jane. "Okay, I didn't mean to tickle you."
"Hey, I didn't even know I was ticklish down there. No one's ever put their tongue there before, you naughty little minx."
"So, are we together, or was this a one-time thing?" Daria asked, blushing from Jane's comment.
Jane leaned in and kissed Daria gently on the lips. "What do you think?"
"Together."
"Then it's settled," Jane said.
Notes:
This is the first story I've posted here, and the first I've written in over 20 years. I have notes for much longer stories, but thought I'd try to get the old juices flowing on something small and light. I hope you like it.
I would like to thank riotsquirrrl for inspiring me to get off my butt and write this.
