Athena laughed, and at that moment the sun glanced through the clouds. It lit up her face and threaded her hair with gold, and the world solidified around them, inescapable and real.
Simon had almost lost this. One twist of fate in another direction, and he might never have seen Athena smile again or heard her laugh. It had been easy to want death when he hadn't known what he stood to lose.
"Hey, you okay?" Athena was still smiling; he must have missed something she'd said.
"Yes," he said, and wondered what she heard in his voice. "I am."
