the screen you watch us through is a two way mirror

Summary:

“Yeah, yeah. Just remember, we’re here to close the distortion case and destroy the prototype, not make friends.”

“Ironic. Considering you're the more sentimental one out of the two of us, Chuuya.”

The ginger stares at him, rolling his eyes in annoyance as he does so. “I’m going to bed.” he says, standing up from the couch before leaving without a word.

“And I’m the lazy one…” he muttered under his breath, watching Chuuya leave with a shrug.

He pulled out the USB before beginning to upload their first video, a simple twenty minute vlog as they explore the ‘ruin’ Yokohama is known as, pointing out famous landmarks as he does so. He hummed softly, rubbing his chin as he thought of a title before perking up as an idea came to mind.

‘WE ENTERED YOKOHAMA ILLEGALLY! 100% NOT CLICKBAIT! DO NOT TRY AT HOME!’

He smirked to himself. He’s so smart.

Chapter Text

[Port Mafia Building, Yokohama : 6.45pm]

“‘Crabby? What type of name is that?” the ginger spoke, his voice echoing through the office. “Boss, no disrespect to ya’ but why the fuck would you let Dazai of all people pick the name?” he reasoned, pointing accusingly towards the bandaged boy standing beside him.

“And you think you could make a better name?” Dazai teased, a shit eating grin forming on her face as he turned to glance at Chuuya. “Pray tell, what would you have picked?”

The boy didn't reply, a huff of annoyance left his lips instead as Chuuya avoided Dazai’s gaze. “That’s what I thought.”

“Oh, fuck off.”

“Now, now boys, you both have much better things to be worrying about than what your channel name should be.” Mori says, a light hearted chuckle leaving his lips as he pulls out a box from beneath his desk. “Now, the necessary equipment is here. Your mission starts as soon as you make that channel, however, it’ll officially start once you step past those borders.”

Dazai glanced at Chuuya, nodding towards the box with an innocent hum. The ginger rolled his eyes, picking up the box nevertheless. “One more thing before I dismiss you. We’ve programmed it so your channel will only be broadcasted to those outside of Yokohama. Additionally, based on the intel we’ve received, we created a secluded area that fits the description of what they perceive Yokohama to look like. Aside from your apartment, you’ll create your videos there. ”

As soon as Mori finished the boys bowed respectfully, taking their leave as a heavy sigh left Dazai’s mouth. Once outside, Chuuya groaned, a complaint on the tip of his tongue.

“How annoying. Can’t believe we’re gonna have to leave Yokohama.” he muttered, a scowl forming on his face as he walked alongside his partner.

“For once in my 15 terrible years of life… I think I’m going to have to agree with you. Gosh, how disastrous.” he replies, placing the back of his hand against his forehead like some damsel in distress. “However, don't you think that the process of getting beyond those borders will be fun?”

Chuuya’s face scrunched ever so slightly, obvious disgust evident as he turned to Dazai. “No.”

[Dazai and Chuuya’s apartment : 7.43pm]

“I can't believe we’re going to be known as ‘Crabby’ now.” Chuuya muttered, leaning back against their couch as he stared at the screen in front of him, their brand new Youtube channel on full display. “You’re shit at naming things.”

“I personally think it’s a wonderful name. Plus, it’s not like you can do any better.” Dazai replied, a hum leaving his lips as he smirked confidently. He moved to pick up the folder at the bottom of the box. “Oh, look Chuuya! It’s our mission details.” he says, pulling out the contents.

MISSION ASSIGNMENT:

MAFIOSO(S) NEEDED: Osamu Dazai and Chuuya Nakahara

MISSION LENGTH: Undetermined

MISSION OBJECTIVE: Identify the source of quirk instability.

MISSION DETAILS:

  • locate any devices, prototypes, or research experiments in U.A that emit a similar frequency instability signature.
  • Hero Commission believes the instability is Yokohama’s fault: prevent them from obtaining key research, avoid any data leaks connecting Yokohama to the anomalies
  • once found, destroy immediately. This includes any digital and physical traces left behind.

SUB OBJECTIVE:

  • due to the similarities between quirks and abilities under certain conditions: analyse how abilities respond to quirks
  • the public stays in favour of mafioso(s) and don't suspect a thing. DO NOT GET CANCELLED.
  • take out any groups that may pose a threat to the overall mission

“‘Undetermined’? So what, they expect us to live in that shitty society until they see fit?” Chuuya complained, staring down at their assignment with obvious dissatisfaction.

“Hm… I guess so.” Dazai replied, resting his head against the couch as a tired sigh left his lips.

“I wonder… what makes quirks and abilities so similar…” Chuuya muttered, looking over all the profiles of the UA staff.

“Abilities are the original quirks. They just developed and weakened over time to put it simply.” Dazai replied, his boredom evident as he huffs. He perks up at an idea, his gaze glance over to the computer screen.

Chuuya glanced over to Dazai, leaning over his shoulder as he watched the boy add a profile picture and banner to their channel. “It’s a crab…”

“Wow Chuuya, really?” he says, his sarcasm evident as he rolls his eyes. He sat back, proud of his work as he smirked confidently. Their profile photo was a picture of a crab with a plain orange background, while their banner was a picture of them, with a crab in place of Chuuya’s face.

The ginger stared at Dazai’s ‘masterpiece’, an exasperated sigh leaving his lips as he gave up on arguing. He turned his attention elsewhere, perking up at the sight of a USB tilted ‘Sports Festival’. “Oi, look at this.”

“What is it?”

Chuuya shrugged, shifting the laptop to face him as he plugged in the USB. They both sat back as the videos began playing, a small hum leaving Dazai’s mouth as the sight of them fighting each other.

“You know, for a school full of so-called heroes, they really like throwing children into violence for entertainment.”

“It’s like watching gladiators fight, y’know, like the Roman times and shit.” the ginger replied, opening a bag of chips before setting it between them, his intrigue obvious.

Minutes later, their eyes widened in pure shock at the sight of a boy freezing half the stadium. “He’s hella overpowered.”

“Hmph. Stupid writers playing favourites.” Dazai mumbles, a pout on his face as he eats the chips.

They finish watching after a while, a groan leaving his lips at the sight of Dazai taking the bag of chips for himself. “Well, partner, I think it’s amazing that we got to see our future classmates!”

“They don’t look half bad. Still, I think our cover as Youtubers is stupid though.” Chuuya replied, cracking his knuckles before stretching.

“I think it’s perfect. Millions of people worship our every move, they think we’re just some unlucky kids vlogging about their life in Yokohama, wishing they could’ve been born anywhere else. No one would suspect that the boys they love so much are only there to sabotage a government conspiracy.” Dazai says, a smile forming on his face at the thought of all the attention he’ll gain once he crosses the border.

[3 months later. UA Heights Alliance, Musutafu: 5.36pm]

“Oh! That reminds me, have you guys heard of that new Youtube channel? They’ve been blowing up recently, and they only started three months ago!”

“Which one?”

“‘Crabby’! They’re so cool! Even more so considering they’re from Yokohama!” Mina replied, shaking Jirou excitedly. She squealed, pulling up their channel on her phone before shoving it into her face.

“Yokohama? You mean that crime ridden city?” Jirou replied, taking Mina’s phone from her as she looked over their channel.

“Whoa, you watch them too Jirou?” Kaminari asked, an excited smile forming on his face at the thought.

She quickly shook her head, pointing to Mina as she did so. “Nope. This is the first I’m hearing of them, Mina watches them though.”

“They’re hella funny! It’s a shame they live in Yokohama though, just by watching their videos I can tell they’re walking on eggshells all day.” Kirishima says, interrupting their conversation as he wraps an arm around Kaminari’s shoulders.

Five minutes. Five minutes was all it took for a small conversation to grow into a full on watch party. They all sat on the couches occasionally making comments towards the video they were watching.

“Their behaviour is reckless and incredibly unsafe!” Iida commented, shaking his head with disapproval.

“C’mon, Iida, they’re manly! They’ve survived in Yokohama their entire lives, and look at those numbers! They’re almost at 5.2 million!” Kirishima replied, nudging him teasingly as he kept his gaze on the screen.

“People only watch them because they’re from Yokohama and because that bandaged freak makes all their titles clickbait.” Bakugou interrupted, a scoff leaving his mouth as he crossed his arms.

“But that’s what makes people click on their videos. It’s a genius marketing strategy if you ask me.” Sero added, leaning back against the couch as he continued to watch.

“They’re dynamic is kinda adorable… even if their city is literally falling apart around them.” Uraraka mumbled, a small smile forming on her face as she watched the video.

“Their composure under pressure is impressive. Suspiciously so.” Todoroki spoke, his eyes narrowing ever so slightly as he did so.

“Suspiciously how?”

“Most kids freeze when being chased by gang members or mafiosos. They treat it like grocery shopping.” he replied, his gaze never wavering from the video as he analysed it.

“They’re from Yokohama. Is it really that surprising that they’ve got fighting experience?” Bakugou scoffed, rolling his eyes at the pure stupidity he’s heard.

[Dazai and Chuuya’s apartment, Yokohama: 3.59am]

Dazai doesn’t sleep. Correction, Dazai couldn't sleep. So, instead, he lied awake, staring at the ceiling out of pure boredom. He sighed, closing his eyes as he relished in the silence - ignoring Chuuya’s snores. Despite claiming not to be a dog, Chuuya sleeps like one, which makes Dazai laugh from time to time.

He sighed once more, turning his head to face Chuuya. “You’re so loud, Chibi…” he whispered, playfully poking the ginger’s cheek before trailing his hand through his hair.

Groaning, Dazai stood up, leaving their shared bed and making his way to the bathroom. He stared at himself in the mirror before looking down at his arm. He took a seat on the toilet, his eyes half-lidded as he began to remove his bandages. His fingers danced lightly over his scars, each touch intoxicating as he savoured the twisted sense of pleasure.

He hummed softly to himself, replacing his bandages with fresh ones. He walked back, flopping onto the bed as he forced himself to sleep.

[7.43am]

Chuuya wanted to sleep in. Chuuya could’ve slept in if it wasn’t for Dazai and his foot resting comfortably on his face. “Get. The fuck. Off me.” he growled, shoving Dazai’s foot off his face, and in doing so, shoving Dazai off the bed.

“Ouch… for such a small child, you push hard..” Dazai whined, his voice playful as he stood up, stretching, before yanking Chuuya out of bed.

Dramatically, he threw the older over his shoulder, making his way to the kitchen. Though, this proved to be quite a challenge as Chuuya had a different reaction to the one Dazai expected of him.

“Put me down, you bastard!” he yelled, kicking his legs and using his arms to hit Dazai on the back. Dazai groaned out in pain, before immediately giving up.

Chuuya was on the ground in seconds, watching as Dazai dramatically fell onto the couch, staring down at their mess of a coffee table with a pout. “I will spit in your food.” he threatened, a grumble leaving his lips as he walked to the kitchen, beginning to cook breakfast.

“Kinky.” the boy replied, his tone playful as he shrugged.

It had only been a few minutes before Dazai had become tired of waiting for breakfast. He stared down the camera in front of him before glancing over to his phone, a hum leaving his lips as he thought.

“Innocent children exposed to the tragedy of life far too early” was what Mori said, his tone firm as he made sure they stuck to their roles. Dazai, the naive playful one, while Chuuya, the more reckless and sceptical.

He huffed, picking up his phone and starting a livestream, staring down the camera till he got the live chat working on his phone.

“Hi everyone… Can you hear me…?” he asked sweetly, a smile forming on his face as he looked at his phone, reading each and every comment.

He walked towards Chuuya’s side silently before suddenly shoving the camera in his face, catching him off guard. “Say hi, Chuuya.”

“Fuck off Dazai.” he replied, his movements stilling slightly as he side-eyed Dazai.

“Sorry about him! He hasn’t been trained yet!” Dazai says, his attention shifting to the camera as he set it up on the counter, poking Chuuya’s cheek annoyingly as he did so.

“Why are you live streaming so early in the morning? Everyone’s probably still asleep right now?”

“Hm? But some people could be going to work or school right now?” Dazai replied, continuing to poke Chuuya’s cheek in an attempt to rage bait him.

“There’s no schools in Yokohama dumbass.”

“I’m talking about the outside world. Weren't you listening when the Big Boss told us? There’s a whole other world outside of Yokohama.” Dazai replied, his knowledge on the topic obvious as he smiled before turning to face the camera. “I wonder where everyone watching this is from…” he trailed off, his face lighting up at the sight of the chat feed.

“Whoa, Chuuya look! There are people from other parts of Japan watching this stream.” he says excitedly, showing him the chat feed happily.

Chuuya hummed softly in acknowledgement, his intrigue peeked despite the nonchalance on his face. He plated the food, handing a plate to Dazai as they moved to the dining table, taking the camera along with them as they did so.

“Hey Chuuya, let's go to the arcade today!”

The ginger opened his mouth to reply before he’s interrupted by the rapid gunfire outside. “Well shit, it’s started already?” he says, his eyes widening as he drops his fork onto the plate. Deciding to be brave, he stood up, running his hands down his face before moving to the window.

“Chuuya! What are you doing?” Dazai asks, already standing as he watches Chuuya make his way to the window. He abandoned the camera, inching closer as he stared at the boy. “Do you think it’s serious enough for us to go into the bunker?”

He flinches slightly, grabbing Chuuya’s wrist abruptly and pulling him away from the window as a stray bullet pierced through it, missing Chuuya’s face by inches.

“It’s better safe than sorry.” Chuuya replied, staring at the bullet hole in their

window before walking off and sight of the camera. “Come on, can’t have you fucking dying on me, can I?” he adds.

Dazai nods, moving away from the window and making a reach for the camera. “Okay guys, livestream over before Youtube bans our account!” he says, a small smile on his face as he glances over to Chuuya, fake concern forming on his face at the sight of the ginger finishing his breakfast. “We’ll update you all once it passes, see ya!”

LIVESTREAM ENDED.

“Finally! Acting as if I cared for you was one of the most depressing times of my life.” Chuuya says, a grumble leaving his lips as he finishes his breakfast.

“I don’t know about you, my acting skills were superb.” Dazai comments, a smug smile on his face as he walks closer to Chuuya, abandoning the camera on the couch as he did so.

With a gentle touch, Dazai delicately brushed a crumb from the corner of Chuuya’s lip, his thumb staying there for a second too long before pulling away. “Gosh Chuuya, I know you’re a dog, but you don't have to act like one, you know?” he says, a huff leaving his mouth as he wipes his hand.

He picked up his plate, scarfing down the food before skipping off to watch TV, not bothering to stay for Chuuya’s reaction.

Luckily, the boy didn’t reply. He didn’t give Dazai the reaction he wanted. Instead, he turned around, eyes focused on the empty plate in front of him as his ears tinged ready ever so slightly.

[UA High School, Musutafu: 10.39am]

All Might wasn’t the most socially active person, often missing out on jokes his students make. However, in the past 2 months, his attention has been drawn to a new emerging Youtube channel. He would be lying to say his interest hadn't peaked, two boys from Yokohama documenting their lives? Who wouldn’t be.

“Did you watch the live stream?”

“I can’t believe Chuuya almost got shot!”

“It’s terrible to think that they go through that everyday!”

He ignored the whispers, arriving at his class albeit a few minutes late. An awkward sigh left his lips at the sight of his students and their concerned expressions despite their attempts to hide it. His smile faltered ever so slightly before just deciding to start the lesson.

[11.25am]

“Five minutes till the end of the lesson, anyone care to share why you all look so down?” All Might spoke, watching his students before laughing awkwardly.

“Young Midoriya? What’s the matter with you?”

“All Might’s been a hero for some time, so surely he must know…” he begins, trailing off as he glances silently around to his classmates, his expression worried.

“Hey All Might, is Yokohama really full of criminals like the rumours say?” Mina asked, perking up at her classmates' words.

“Ah- well…”

“Why is Yokohama shut off from the rest of Japan?”

“Are the people of Yokohama alright?”

His mouth trembled slightly as he attempted to answer all their questions. He’s saved by the bell as it rings, signalling the end of their fourth period. He sighed, watching his class leave with disappointed expressions on their faces as he reminded each of them to study hard.

All Might contemplates their questions, heading to the teachers lounge to have

his break there. Why is Yokohama shut off from the rest of Japan? A question many people haven’t thought of. It’s been locked off for years, the adults of this generation growing up with it locked away.

[11.35am]

The teacher’s lounge is a room with grey flooring and tan walls, a pair of couches sat in the room with a coffee table sat between them. The principal sat on the couch, his paws circling around his teacup as he brought it to his lips as he awaited the hero. He deduced that he would want to talk so he moved to the teachers lounge so they would be comfortable.

All Might entered the room, his eyes widening slightly at the sight of the principal drinking tea. “All Might, were you thinking of me? How sweet!” he says playfully, chuckling to himself as he takes another sip of tea. He gestures to the couch across from him, expecting the hero to join him. “Well? I don't have all day.”

Hesitantly, All Might sat across from the principal, his large frame fitting awkwardly on the couch. “Why is Yokohama shut off from the rest of Japan?” he asks, not bothering to wait as he meets the principal's gaze, his lips pressed together as he waited for the reply.

Nezu chuckled to himself, picking up his teacup to take another sip before sighing contently. “I don’t know. The barriers of Yokohama were created well before my time. So despite my extensive knowledge, I wouldn't be able to tell you.”

“You can’t be serious.” All Might says, his voice one of disbelief as he eyes Nezu. It may be wrong for him to doubt his boss, but he needs answers. There’s vulnerable people within the barriers of Yokohama who could easily be manipulated into joining criminal gangs. And it’s not like he could trust what the whole of Japan has been born to say. Rumours like that are exaggerated daily. But there’s no doubt in his mind. The people of Yokohama need saving.

“Oh, but I am. It’s truly a shame with what the people of Yokohama are going through, but until we can get reliable information. We can only trust the information given to us by those two boys. You surely know who I’m talking about.” Nezu says with a sigh before waving his hand and dismissing All Might.

With a deep breath, All Might leaves the office, his thoughts spiralling out of control. He reaches the Administration Office, hoping to have his break in silence and his mind off his previous talk. But before he could do that, a notification rang out, echoing through the empty room. Confused, he took out his phone to check the notification.

‘CHUUYA SUCKS AT DODGING BULLETS AND GOT SHOT! 100% NOT CLICKBAIT! DO NOT TRY AT HOME’

2.82M VIEWS, 360K LIKES.

CRABBY 15.67M SUBSCRIBERS

All Might’s heart jumped slightly at the title before sighing in realisation that ‘Dazai’ has been dubbed the ‘King of Clickbait’ by his fans. “I need to gain more information…” he mumbled to himself, turning his phone screen to watch the video.

[An Arcade, Yokohama: 12.00pm]

“Miss us?” Dazai asks playfully, holding the camera up high so both him and Chuuya were in view. “Okay guys, you’re about to witness footage that’s never been seen before. A street in Yokohama…”

He turned the camera around, giving their viewers a first person POV in ‘Yokohama’. Abandoned cars littered the roadway, shop windows shattered, and doors left ajar, as if their owners fled in a desperate haste. Buildings stand as hollow shells, their windows pierced and broken with bullet holes and their facades, marred by the decay of neglect. A thick fog of uncertainty hung in the air, masking any signs of movement.

“Huh? I guess mob war made the people flee. No-one’s here.”  Chuuya spoke, his voice soft as he eyed the desolated street in front of him.

He bent down, picking up a flyer that laid on the floor. “Not surprising, it’s not the first time they’ve done shit like this. And according to this flyer, the next war’s tomorrow. So, we have to get the shopping done today.” he says, sighing as he throws the paper. His eyes watching as the flyer flew away in the wind, dancing gently without a care in the world.

“Aww, does that mean we can’t go to the arcade?” Dazai asks, his voice whiny as he meets Chuuya’s gaze with a playful pout.

“Nah, we can. We just have to be mindful of the time.” Chuuya says with a deep breath, shoving his hands into his pants pocket, and begins to walk towards the arcade. Dazai followed him with a smile, entertaining his viewers and annoying Chuuya as he walked alongside the ginger.

[UA High School, Musutafu: 12.30pm]

“Well, glad to know they're okay!” Yaoyorozu, the class’ vice president, spoke, her voice soft as she smiled, clapping her hands together slightly. The whole of UA High, as well as the rest of Japan, was watching, intrigued and relieved that the famous ‘Crabby’ duo were perfectly okay and safe from any harm.

“But I can't shake the eerie feeling I got from that street they were on.” Yaoyorozu added, her voice one of concern as  she continued to watch the video, a small smile creeping onto her face as she chuckled to herself silently at their interactions, erasing the previous thoughts she held.

“It’s really scary that they have to go through that.” Uraraka spoke out from a separate table.

“There’s no need to worry, Uraraka. I’m sure the heroes are working on getting into Yokohama and saving the people within.” Midoriya says with a comforting smile. Uraraka smiled back before both of their attention was drawn back to Dazai bickering with Chuuya.

[Dazai and Chuuya's apartment, Yokohama: 6.58pm]

“This whole YouTube thing is really starting to get on my fucking nerves.” Chuuya states, falling down onto their couch with a sigh. He rubs his hands over his face, before closing his eyes, relishing in the silence that he has.

However, his moment of silence doesn’t last long as Dazai parades into their shared living room hoping onto Chuuya’s lap. “You look like you need a drink.” Dazai comments with a small smile, adjusting himself on Chuuya’s lap before resting his head in the crook of Chuuya’s neck. “Wanna go to a bar?” Dazai asks softly, eyeing Chuuya.

“Nah, too much work.” Chuuya replies with a sigh. He picks Dazai up (which wasn’t that much of a challenge) before throwing him back onto their couch. “Whiskey?” Chuuya asks, making his way towards the kitchen.

“With ice, please.” he replies playfully, a soft smile on his face as he watches Chuuya. A smile forms on the boy’s face at the sight of his dog being obedient for once, his ears tinting pink as he watches the ginger. Dazai averts his gaze almost immediately once he realised what he was doing. He hoped that Chuuya didn’t notice him staring as he coughed, clearing his throat in order to distract himself.

Chuuya walked back after a while, two glasses in his hand as he took a seat, opening his arms to allow Dazai to hop back onto his lap. Dazai accepts his offer happily, hiding his previous thoughts with a teasing grin as he moves into Chuuya's lap with a bright smile. He hands Dazai his glass before enjoying the way his liquid swirled around in his glass.

Dazai cradled a glass of amber liquid while Chuuya's red. The soft glow of the lamp beside them danced across their faces as they laughed along with each other, reading the comments on their videos. With each sip, they let the warmth of the alcohol seep into their bones. The comfort of familiar surroundings enveloped them as Chuuya shared his drunken opinion towards their mission, their conversation flowing freely like the spirits in their glasses. As the night deepened, their (Chuuya’s drunken) laughter grew louder, filling the room with an infectious joy that only deepened their bond.

“You're not drunk, are you doggy? It's such a hassle to bring back to bed, you know.” Dazai says, poking Chuuya’s cheek playfully.

“Fuck you dumbass.. I'm not..” Chuuya replies, his words slurred as he rests his glass down on a nearby table, swatting Dazai's hand away from his cheek.

“Ahh- My loyal doggy's in denial..” Dazai taunts playfully, taking a sip of his whiskey.

It's not long before Chuuya's knocked out, resting his head on top of Dazai's as he snores peacefully. “Mmm” Chuuya murmurs.

Dazai smiles slightly, placing his glass next to Chuuya's. Resting his head comfortably on Chuuya's shoulder, as he begins to drift off to sleep.
