Little dragon

Summary:

Hiro finally believes he has his life under control, balancing college responsibilities with family obligations. Just as he plans to spend a meaningful day with his girlfriend and their baby, his aunt Cass unexpectedly asks him to work, forcing Hiro to choose between his family duties and the time he promised to the people he loves most.

Work Text:

"Cass needs us," Hiro said into the phone, his voice tight with urgency. "It's like the whole town decided to show up for coffee and she's got half her usual crew today."

Tadashi nodded, setting aside his graphic novel with a sigh. "Alright, I'll grab my apron. Can't have Auntie Cass pulling double shifts."

The brothers hurried to the cafe, the chill of the autumn breeze nipping at their heels as they darted down the sidewalk. Inside, the warmth of the café embraced them, a blend of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filling the air. The place was indeed packed, with the hum of chatter and clinking of cups creating a gentle din that seemed to amplify the stress etched on Cass's face. She was moving at lightning speed, trying to manage the throngs of customers all by herself.

Tadashi didn't even bother to ask for instructions. He knew the routine like the back of his hand. He slipped behind the counter and immediately started to take orders, his charming smile and easy banter putting the customers at ease. Meanwhile, Hiro, with his sharp mind and nimble fingers, took over the kitchen. The sizzle of the grill and the clanging of pots and pans became a rhythmic symphony under his command. His movements were swift and precise, a dance honed by years of helping out at the café.

As they worked side by side, Tadashi couldn't help but remember that today was supposed to be Hiro's day off. He was supposed to have a family outing with Tip and little Ryuu. The thought of Tip's crestfallen face made Tadashi's heart sink. He knew how much she cherished their rare moments of freedom from their busy schedules. "Hey, wasn't today your big outing with Tip and Ryu?" he asked, his voice a tad too casual.

Hiro's eyes flickered with guilt for a brief second before he shrugged it off, flipping a pancake with a practiced flip of his wrist. "Yeah, I had to cancel," he said, trying to keep the disappointment out of his voice. "Cass really needs the help. You know how it gets when the leaves start to fall."

Tadashi nodded, his gaze drifting over to the window where the leaves outside danced in the wind, painting the street in a warm, amber hue. He knew the autumn rush at the café was a double-edged sword for their aunt. It brought in the tourists, but it also meant longer hours and more pressure.

Hiro, on the other hand, seemed to be channeling his disappointment into his cooking. He was a whirlwind in the kitchen, flipping pancakes, cracking eggs, and slicing strawberries with a ferocity that seemed to be fueled by something deeper. His eyes remained focused on the tasks at hand, as if the concentration required to keep up with the pace was the only way he could keep his mind from wandering to the family outing that was slipping through his fingers. The smells grew more tantalizing with every dish he prepared, and the plates he sent out were nothing short of culinary masterpieces.

Meanwhile, Tip had arrived, pushing the stroller with a sleeping Ryuu inside. The bell above the door jingled cheerfully, announcing her presence, but the cacophony of the busy café drowned it out. She scanned the room, looking for Hiro, her eyes landing on the flurry of activity behind the counter. Her heart swelled with pride as she watched him juggle his duties so effortlessly, but she couldn't shake the feeling of sadness that clung to her like a second skin.

Tadashi caught sight of her first. He greeted her with a warm smile, which dimmed slightly when he saw the sadness in her eyes. "Hey, Tip," he called out, raising his voice over the din. "How's my favorite little guy doing?" He leaned over the counter to peek into the stroller, only to find Ryuu fast asleep, his chubby cheeks flushed from the cool air outside.

Tip managed a tired smile. "Ryu's just taking a quick nap before he's ready to cause chaos," she said, her voice a mix of love and resignation. She placed her order for a cinnamon latte and a plate of Cass's famous apple crumble. Despite her disappointment, the scent of the apple pie made her mouth water. It was a small comfort on a day that hadn't turned out quite as she'd planned.

Tadashi felt the tension in the air thicken. He knew how much Hiro had been looking forward to their outing and how much it meant to Tip, who was juggling school, work, and motherhood with the grace of a tightrope walker. He also knew that his brother had a soft spot for Tip, and he didn't want her to feel forgotten or neglected. So, he hatched a plan.

"Hiro," he called out, his voice carrying over the din of the café. "Can you check on table seven? They've been waiting a while for their order."

Hiro's eyebrows knitted together in annoyance, his hand hovering over a steaming plate of eggs benedict. He glanced up, about to protest, when his eyes met Tip's. The sight of her standing there, her dark hair pulled back into a ponytail, her eyes weary yet hopeful, made his heart skip a beat. He quickly masked his frustration and nodded, wiping his hands on his apron. "On it," he said, plating the eggs with a bit more finesse than necessary.

When he emerged from the kitchen, the warmth of Tip's smile hit him like a ray of sunshine through the clouds. He felt the weight of his guilt lighten as he approached her, the stroller, and the sleeping baby. "Hey, beautiful," he said, leaning down to kiss her cheek. "How's our little dragon?"

Tip's eyes searched his, looking for any hint of regret or sadness, but she found none. "He's fine," she said softly, her voice thick with unshed tears. "Just tired."

Without missing a beat, Hiro reached into the stroller and lifted Ryuu into his arms. The baby stirred, his eyes fluttering open to reveal sleepy pools of brown. He blinked up at his dad with a sleepy smile, his arms wrapping around Hiro's neck as if he hadn't seen him in weeks. Hiro felt his heart swell with love and guilt intertwined. He'd missed this, the simple act of holding his son, feeling the warmth of his little body pressed against his own.

Tip watched the scene unfold, her own heart aching at the sight of her two favorite people finally reunited. She knew Hiro was torn between his responsibilities at the café and his family, and it wasn't fair to any of them. But she also knew that he'd do anything to support them, even if it meant sacrificing their precious time together.

Just then, a customer at the counter called out, "Excuse me, can I get a refill?" Hiro's gaze flicked over to the customer, and he gave a curt nod before planting a soft kiss on Ryu's forehead. "Hold on, little guy," he murmured, gently transferring the sleepy toddler into Tip's arms.

Ryuu snuggled against Tip, his eyes still half-closed as he sought comfort in her familiar scent and warmth. She held him close, feeling his breath against her neck as he drifted back into a peaceful slumber. Hiro leaned in, whispering, "I'm sorry, Tip. It's super busy today." He kissed her forehead before turning to address the impatient customer, his expression shifting from the tender warmth of a loving father to the efficient professionalism of a café worker.

As Hiro tended to the customer, Tip couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness. Their outing was supposed to be a much-needed break from the chaos of their lives, a chance to reconnect without the pressures of work or school. Now, it seemed like another casualty of their hectic schedules. But as she watched him, she knew that he was where he needed to be—supporting his aunt and their business. The café was more than just a place for coffee; it was a haven for their family.

As if sensing her thoughts, Aunt Cass called out, "Hiro, I can handle the kitchen for a bit. Why don't you take an extra-long lunch break?" Her voice was filled with understanding and a hint of concern. Hiro looked up, surprise etched on his face, but the fatigue that had been weighing him down moments ago seemed to evaporate. He glanced at Tip, his eyes lighting up. "Really?"

"Go on," Cass urged, waving them away. "You two need some time together. I've got this."

Hiro's face brightened like a sunflower, and he nodded gratefully before turning to Tip. "You up for a walk?"

Tip's smile grew wider, her eyes sparkling with hope. "More than ever," she whispered, her voice barely heard over the clamor of the café. She adjusted the strap of her bag, cradling Ryu closer to her chest.

They stepped outside, the crunch of leaves underfoot a stark contrast to the bustling café they'd left behind. The cool air washed over them, a refreshing reprieve from the kitchen's heat. Tip inhaled deeply, savoring the sweet scent of autumn that seemed to mingle with the aroma of coffee that clung to their clothes. "Let's go to the park," she suggested, her voice filled with excitement.

Ryuu stirred at the mention of the park, his eyes popping open like little brown stars. He squirmed in Tip's arms, reaching out to Hiro. "Park?" he echoed, his voice still groggy with sleep.

Hiro chuckled, his eyes shining. "You heard right, buddy," he said, taking the hint. He reached out and took Ryuu from Tip, the toddler's little arms wrapping around his neck like a warm, squishy scarf. "We're going to the park, just you and me and your mom."

Ryuu's eyes lit up like Christmas lights, and he squealed with delight. "Park! Swings!" He bounced in Hiro's arms, his chubby legs kicking in excitement.

Hiro chuckled, feeling the weight of his son's joy fill him with warmth. "Swings it is," he agreed, his voice a mix of amusement and affection.

The park was a short stroll away, and as they approached, the laughter of children playing and the gentle rustle of leaves filled the air. The vibrant oranges and reds of the trees created a picturesque backdrop for their impromptu family outing.

Upon reaching the playground, Hiro's eyes searched for the swings, eager to make good on his promise. Spotting them, he rushed over, placing Ryuu in one and pushing him gently. The toddler's giggles were infectious, filling Tip's heart with joy as she watched her son's delight. Hiro's face was a portrait of pure happiness as he pushed the swing higher, the autumn breeze ruffling his hair. His youthful features were momentarily untouched by the responsibilities of his genius mind and the café, revealing the carefree boy he was at heart.
