Chapter Text
Yuji was staring out the classroom window whilst his teacher was droning on about English tenses. Looking out to the courtyard he saw a small black book drop from out of the sky. It fell fast, before landing gently onto the grass below.
“Yuji! Which is the correct tense for this word?” The teacher called from up front. Even as Yuji stumbled to answer, the notebook did not leave his mind.
After school was dismissed for the day Yuji couldn’t help but check the courtyard for the notebook that appeared to come from the sky. When he came to where the notebook was sitting, picked it up and saw the scrawl of the words “DEATH NOTE” atop the cover, the stark white extenuating each character against the black of the cover. Yuji’s english was not very good, but he couldn’t help but shudder at the feeling he got when reading the letters of the notebook.
After shaking off the weird feeling, he opened the cover to uncover more English, although these words appeared to be some kind of list based on the numbering of each sentence. Sighing after attempting to make sense of it without having much luck, Yuji decided to put it away and to ask his best friend Junpei about it later. After all, it's about time he goes and sees his gramps.

His gramps told him not to get upset about his death. To try and help as many people as Yuji could. That Yuji had the power to help others and as such should use it to help others. Yuji said that everyone should be able to pass peacefully like gramps. Gramps told him that he hopes Yuji doesn’t pass like he would. That Yuji should be laughing with others around him when he passes.
Yuji cries after going home knowing his gramps never would walk these halls ever again.

He goes to school the next day having already handled his gramps cremation, and the finding of a guardian willing to take him out of his hands.
At lunch he meets with Junpei and as he is putting his bag down a black notebook tumbles out from it.
“What’s that?” Junpei asks, grabbing for the book.
“I don’t really know… Oh! I was going to ask you about it because you watch a bunch of movies in English right? It has stuff in English in it and you know how lost I get in that class so I figured I’d ask you for help.” Yuji explained whilst gesturing to the book.
“Death note? That seems kinda ominous. Where’d you find it? Clearly isn’t yours.” Junpei deadpanned, eyeing Yuji up and down. He continued to open up the notebook and began to roughly translate the rules of the death note.
Yuji soon fell quiet and started to lean towards the book anticipating his friend’s insight into what the notebook said.
Junpei looked up at Yuji and just sighed, “Well this note book of yours is not only dramatic as fuck””—hey!” “but it also claims to be able to kill someone just by writing their name in it. If it was only something other than an obvious prank I would’ve been intrigued due to its creepy tone.” Handing it back to a pouting Yuji, Junpei couldn’t help but ask, “Where did you even get this?”
“Well I think it might have fallen out of the sky.” Putting the book away he saw Junpei’s dry stare clearly telling Yuji to stop spouting nonsense and to give a real answer. “I’m serious, I swear! It just popped up out of nowhere from the sky and then like fell like whoooosh onto the grass! But the weird part was that instead of going SMACK when it hit the floor it landed like a feather!”
“Wait, you're telling me this ominous notebook has some horror movie type origin?”
“IT’S LIKE A START TO A HORROR MOVIE!” Yuji’s eyes lit up at the comparison Junpei brought up.
Junpei flicked Yuji’s forehead, “Do you not hear yourself? Death note. Kills people. Horror movies. Does any of that sound nice? Well it might be... but that's aside from the point.”
Yuji winced, “Yeah… I should probably throw it away. We have to get to class anyway.” He sighed, getting up and starting to pack up.
“Wait.” Junpei looked uncertain for a few seconds before letting out a shaky breath, “I have a bad feeling about this. Perhaps we should hold onto it for a bit longer. If we throw it away here it might cause issues later down the line. I mean... someone might think we were the one to make it. Why don’t you come over to my house after school and dispose of it there?”
The two agreed and made their way to class ignorant of the weight this one decision held.
