“Everything ok with you in the back there, Jess?” Connor glanced in the rearview mirror as he slowed to an almost stop to turn into their driveway.
“She’s still out of it and just the cutest thing ever.” Jesse didn’t even bother to look up at his husband, enamoured with his daughter’s little face. No matter how long he had stared at her in the hospital it would never be enough. Even if he got the next eighteen years of his life to do nothing but look at her, it would never be enough. And if she was anything like him or Connor and went into racing? It wouldn’t just be the next eighteen years that they were around for, probably closer to forever than a set number.
“You want to carry her in then, Daddy?” Connor turned and smiled at Jesse when he shut the car off as their daughter yawned widely and blinked herself awake. “Hello sweetie.”
“I’ve got her, you got the bags and the door?” As Jesse reached for the handle so he could let himself out of the car, it finally sank in - he had a baby now! Despite the parenting classes, he felt so woefully unprepared. All the race wins they’d accumulated over their many seasons in Cup, all the NASCAR championships that Connor had won and indeed when Jesse had finally won his championship three years before retiring, nothing had prepared him to be bringing his first baby home. Thank god they’d been decorated for Christmas early, and their families were staying in hotels. He wanted all the time with her that he could get.
Connor unlocked the door of their house and put the hospital bag down, before walking back to his husband who was struggling with the car seat. “I’ve got it, Love.” He smirked at Jesse who just rolled his eyes, sick to death of that stupid pun, undoing the car seat with ease before shutting the door and offering him one side of the handle so they could both welcome her home for the first time together.
She was back to sleep by the time she was into the warmth of the house, leaving the two men to coo over her quietly while they placed her into the bassinet before setting up a baby monitor and letting her sleep in peace.
“I love you.” Connor leant his forehead against Jesse’s chest as all the emotions hit him at once.
“I know.” Jesse’s response just drew a rolled eye and playful swat to the chest as they settled down to watch Die Hard on the couch. “Merry Christmas, I think it’ll be hard to top this present next year.”
“Could get to work on giving you another baby now if you wanted.” His tone was deceptively casual and innocent, but his wandering hands were very much not.
“Right here and now?”
“Might be our last chance for months.”
“Fuck yes, you never have to ask me twice.”
