Work Text:
The last time Nanami was in front of this office building he had just handed in his final paperwork and was returning to Sorcery.
He made a promise to himself to come back and though he was now injured and disfigured, he made it back.
“Even if Y/n wants nothing to do with me, I want to keep my promise.”
The last battle he was fully cognisant for was Halloween Shibuya and he was fully prepared to die that day. He had been fighting for hours and knew there were more curses that needed to be dealt with, he was exhausted and had let his guard down long enough to get caught. Mahito materialized right behind him and he could still feel their hands along his back on bad days. But, due to some quick thinking on young Todo’s part, the two switched places and Mahito wound up with a face full of Itadori’s fists and he was spared an early end.
It didn't mean he was free though.
The injuries he sustained in fighting Dagon, and then the Swarm with Mahito almost immediately after, caused painful burns to the entire left side of his body and the full loss of his eye. The nerve damage was extensive and he still had to seek out Shoko for treatment but with a mix of Sorcerer and modern medicine, Nanami was able to walk into the building with his head held high and that was good enough for him.
He had wanted so badly to rush back to Y/n the moment he reopened his eyes but he was constantly sedated for his own health and safety. Then when he was allowed to be awake he still couldn't move thanks to bandages and skin grafts. Physical therapy was unavoidable but by sticking with it, he only needed a crutch or cane to move around on his own for the most part but Shoko and Yuji insisted on him having a walker and wheelchair to help on bad days.
In the 6 years since he had been gone, Y/n seemed to have moved up the ranks and was now the CFO of the same company they met at and it apparently came with an office on a much higher floor. Seeing as his eye injuries sometimes caused a bit of vertigo, he made sure not to look out the window as the elevator took him up.
Would she even still want me like this?
The elevator opened and Nanami checked in with the receptionist there as well before he was eyed suspiciously.
“I'm sorry.” The young lady whispered as she led him towards Y/n’s office. “But did you used to work here?”
Nanami didn't expect to be remembered by anyone in the building but it gave him comfort to know that he was still recognizable.
Even after everything.
The young lady introduced herself as Tokiko whom he had met when he had still worked there. She was now Hinaku’s romantic partner and she let him know that the man apparently had a framed picture of them on his desk.
I didn't realize I meant that much to him.
When they reached the CFO’s office she bowed and offered to give Nanami his new contact information should he want to reconnect. “I'll have it ready for you on your way out. Also Ms. Y/n has another obligation in a little while so you will have to be quick.”
He thanked her again and stood facing the door.
On the other side was Y/n and it had been almost 6 years since he had seen each other. Would she be happy to see him? Would she be angry? She had every right to be seeing as when he left all he gave her was a short letter promising to come back.
Nanami took a deep breath and knocked on the door.
“Come in.” From the other side he heard the voice that had become his inner motivation for the past several years.
He pushed the door open and behind a large important looking desk sat Y/n who hadn’t looked away from her screen but had a professional smile on her face as she gave a generic greeting. She was still as beautiful as the last time he had seen her. Her skin was still smooth and beautiful with no visible signs of aging but he knew that she could be sitting in front of him having aged 100 years and he would still find her captivating. Her hair was shorter now and pulled back in a puffy ponytail that was catching the afternoon sun making her seem like she was glowing.
Nanami let out a sigh that felt like the relief he had been waiting for.
“Welcome. How can I hel-” Her eyes finally drifted over and Nanami stood awkwardly in the doorway realizing he should have brought something other than himself (or what was left of himself).
“Hello Y/n.” Nanami dipped into his best bow but his back had lost most of it’s range of movement. “You seem well.”
“Nanami?” Y/n stared at him wide eyed and mouth open as she tried to register what she was seeing. He smiled as best as he could and nodded as she slowly stood and came around the desk to see him closer. “It’s you?”
“What’s left of me.” He was in nothing more than slacks, a button up and soft shoes looking about as old as he felt. The skin grafts blended alright and didn't look too off from a distance but he couldn't fight the anxiousness he felt as Y/n approached him. “I’ve missed you.”
Her eyes misted over as she studied his face.
While in his coma Nanami often imagined being reunited with Y/n in various fantastic ways. There was one where she turned out to be a Curse User as well and was able to step in and save him in Shibuya, another where they returned to Malaysia just the two of them and they got married in secret, but a recurring one was just a simple greeting and they would pick up where they left off as if none of this ever happened.
What he never expected was a slap across his face and a sudden weight on his chest. “How could you do this to me you stupid fucking bastard?” Y/n had him gripped around the center with her face buried in his chest. “I hate you, you stupid idiot asshole.”
“I’m sorry my love.” He used his good hand to hold her as she began sobbing in between the curses and name calling. God it felt so good to hold her again. And he knew he deserved the slap. Thankfully it was his left side and he couldn't feel much on that side but he could sense her warmth as she gripped at and shook him. He buried his face in her hair like he always did and it smelt like she had a new hair oil but it was still soft and fragrant. Black castor oil seemed to still be a main one but there was something else in there. Peppermint maybe. “I’m so sorry.”
“All you left me was a stupid letter and I looked for you for months after that.” She pulled back and looked up at him. The sadness in her face broke his heart.
They moved so he could lean against the desk but made sure they didn't let go of each other. There was so much to say but no words to find in the moment and that was ok for them. Gentle hands started ghosting over his injuries and they exchanged glances as she pressed gently on the scarred skin still crying.
“I almost didn't make it.” he let her remove his glove and the feeling of her hand in his again after all these years made him shake.
“Did you expect you would?” she sniffed.
“No.” He watched her fingers move over his. Even when he wasn't fully there Yuji and Todo were among his visitors in the medical ward and they seemed to just want to sit with him as they hung out. He didn't know what it did for them but it was one of the few things that helped him hold on.
He had gone into the fight to protect the two of them but in the end, they protected him. Both in battle and in recovery.
Lost in thought, Nanami used his good hand to caress Y/n’s cheek, using his thumb to wipe tears. Her eyes were still that beautiful dark color, sparkling slightly now that she was facing the sun. Her nose, that he kissed so many mornings, was now scratched up from her wiping her face. Then her lips. Plump and bruising due to her chewing on them from the stress of the situation.
He wanted to kiss her.
He missed kissing her.
He should have kissed her before he left.
If I had I wouldn't have gone back.
But then maybe I wouldn't look like this.
Y/n’s inspection reached his face and she carefully grazed his brow and up to his hairline. It seemed that only now she saw he was missing an eye and she let out a worried whimper.
“Don't worry.” He removed his glasses so she could see it better. “I can't feel anything on that side. My vision is still the same though. With my glasses of course.”
Y/n shook her head and put her arms around his shoulders. For a few moments it was just her hiccuping against him. “Where were you Kento?” She whispered. “I needed you.”
“I’m here now.” he held her closer.
“I tried to find that school you went to.” She nuzzled into the crook of his neck. “I really needed to talk to you.”
“Talk to me now.” he could feel her lips against his neck and it was just as exhilarating as the first time. Nanami finally let his desire take over and he turned to kiss the corner of her mouth. “Tell me everything.”
Y/n moved to look at him almost angrily before she dove in and kissed him properly.
Kento realized how much his body remembered and craved her. Their lips still fit together perfectly and it didn't take long for them to be moaning into each other’s mouths. Tasting her again made his chest hurt from how fast his heart was beating. Several times they tried to pull apart but they couldn't be apart for more than a quarter of a second.
He finally felt like he was home. Safe. With the love of his life who still loved him.
“Ms. Y/n,” the intercom beeped to life and the pair jumped apart as if they had been caught by teachers. “Kohaku is here.”
While she scrambled to answer and get herself together Nanami also took a moment to straighten himself up as well. “Should I leave?”
“What?” she paused fixing her lip makeup. “Oh, um.. No, maybe.”
Nanami opened his arms and though she was visibly nervous, Y/n rounded the desk again and sank into them. “Everything on my end has been solved and I am finally free of the obligations I owed to them. I’m not going anywhere.” he gave her another meaningful kiss. “Unless you wish to send me away.”
Before Y/n could respond her office door swung open and a grade schooler ran in and up to her who welcomed them with open arms and kisses. “Hi Baby! Did you have fun at school today?”
The child seemed not to notice him and started chattering. This gave Nanami a chance to read the situation. They had a backpack telling him that they were old enough for some type of school but they couldn't have been more than 7 or 8 years old. The little one was only about a half shade or so lighter than Y/n and curly hair that seemed similar to Y/n’s with only slightly looser curls. But when they turned to face him, a haunting realization hit him like a hit from one of Gojo’s attacks.
“Sweetheart, this is Nanami Kento.” Y/n introduced them to each other. “Kento, this is my child, Kohaku.”
Nanami stared at the child dumbfounded. Light brown eyes that were just like his looked up at him curiously. Kento knelt to the child’s height and extended his good hand in greeting.
“Nice to meet you Kohaku.” The child looked up to their mother for reassurance and she nodded but they still buried their face in her side.
“It’s ok Love. Go see Komiko for a minute.”
The child was sent out of the office to go play and the silence hung in the air between the remaining adults.
“Was that-”
“I found out a month or so after you left.” Y/n quickly cut him off. “I even walked up to that school temple to see if you were there but it was a ghost town.”
To think this was what was waiting for him all these years.
“Y/n, I’m-”
“You're not sorry.” She stopped him. “You didn't know so you can't be held responsible.”
“But I-” He was stopped again.
If his math was correct then this would have happend during their time in Malaysia or shortly after. And her saying she went up to the school was odd seeing as the path should have been hidden from outsiders.
“But yes.” she sighed and leaned against the desk next to him. “That was what I wanted to talk to you about.”
For a while they stared through the door as the child played with Y/n’s secretary.
“How old?”
“They turn 6 in a few months.” so it must have been their time in Malaysia.
“They’re beautiful.” Nanami was still trying to process that the little thing out there was his… he was a father. “Y/n-”
He turned to her but she moved away. “Look, you don't have to do anything about it. We’ve been fine this whole time and to be real, I wasn't expecting you to be alive, I wanted you to know. And now you know.”
They were quiet again as they sat. Nanami knew it was going to be an emotional day from seeing Y/n alone, but this was unexpected. He had always wanted a family of his own and now that he was free of sorcery he planned on working on that at some point. But to find out his dream had already come true.
Nanami reached out and took one of Y/n’s hands in his and squeezed it. “I’m sorry I wasn't there.”
“You didn't know you needed to be.” She squeezed back.
“That doesn’t mean it was easy.” Nanami tried not to wonder who was there in his place when she started to show, or when she had to go on maternity leave.
Or when she gave birth.
“So what now?” Y/n sighed eventually.
Nanami brought the back of her hand up to his lips placing a gentle kiss on her knuckles. “I will want whatever you want Y/n.”
“Kohaku sees things.” Y/n sounded almost apologetic. Like she wanted to give him an out. “They’re still young enough for me to call it an imaginary friend but I don't know how to handle it.”
Nanami watched as Kohaku laughed heartily at whatever the secretary said. They had inherited his Curse Sight.
“I did too at that age. I was a lonely child.”
“They try to describe them to me but I can't-” Y/n sounded ready to cry.
“I can help.” It was the least he could do. “Let me help.” He no longer had much to offer, but he could let Kohaku know they weren't alone.
“I just want our baby to be happy.” Y/n held Nanami’s hand tighter.
“And I will do everything in my power to make sure of that.” It was the easiest promise he had ever made.
“And you're home to stay?”Y/n stared at Nanami like she was trying to make sure this wasn't a dream.
“As long as you want me.” Unfortunately he wasn't too sure himself.
“Well then,” she said finally, smiling as she pressed herself against him. “Welcome home Mr. Nanami.”
“Happy to be home, Mrs. Nanami.”
