Chapter 1: the flyer

Chapter Text

     ♡

"aaaaaah... hyunjinnie, i'm so bored! why did our favourite shop have to close today... life is so- huh!?"

a flyer had flew directly into jisung's face, making a small laugh leave hyunjin's lips.

"jiji, what is it?"

"it's..."

busy hands fumble with the flyer, trying to straighten it up with one hand as the wind blew into their faces. a damp spot grew on the paper from coming in touch with his iced coffee, making it even more fragile in the slippery wind. the cool breeze eventually calmed down, and the words on the flyer practically lit up in front of jisung's eyes.

futilelife band in desperate need of a guitarist and bassist, please join!!!! meet us at coffee4peace at 3pm STAT.

"hyun- hyunjinnie, it's 3 PM right now, right? this is it! this must be a sign! this could be our chance to shine! we have to go, now!"

"wait, right now!? i haven't even finished my work yet! jiji, hey! stop! calm down, you rat!"

the boy quickly dashed away, his scarf and hair flying behind him as he rushed towards the café mentioned on the flyer. his friend stood still as he watched, hot coffee in one hand and his art project in the other, hesitating.

much as he loved jiji, he was too impulsive sometimes. going into shops every time he sees something cute without thinking about whether or not he had money on him, buying any dessert he thought looked good basically every day, accepting random offers and invites...

the amount of times he got scammed is surprisingly very little.

hyunjin decided to follow after him with a sigh, taking a sip out of his coffee and looking around campus with an exasperated look.

//

jisung arrived at the café with a heaving chest and flushed cheeks, leaning against the door to breathe before stepping inside. bright eyes observed the interior, analyzing and trying to figure out who looked like they could be in a band.

...that wasn't easy to do in a college specializing in the arts.

his heart leaped out of his chest when the doors suddenly opened right beside him, revealing an exhausted and mildly infuriated hyunjin.

"you... are so annoying, jiji."

"sorry, hyunjin..."

jisung's arm wrapped around the panting ferret for just a few seconds before he walked away again, heading for the guy who seemed to be waiting impatiently for someone.

"hello, my name is han jisung. are you the guy that uh-" he unfolded the crumbled flyer and held it up for the guy. "-that gave out these flyers?"

the blonde haired guy seemed to loosened up a bit, cheeks adorned with dimples as he nodded.

"name's chris. you can call me chan, too. you're here to audition for the band, yeah?"

"yes! i'm here with my friend, hyunjin! he's- he's..."

jisung turned around to see nobody at the door, brows furrowing in confusion before he turned once more, a small sigh leaving him as he pointed at the cool, awesomely-dressed guy flirting with the barista. how did he recover from all that running so fast?

"that's... him. he always acts weird towards felix, but he's a great bassist! please let us in your band!"

chan chuckled and nodded before jisung could even pull out his special puppy-dog-eyes trick, holding out his hand for him to take.

never in his simple life did jisung ever think he'd be offered a handshake. he'd seen it in cartoons, animes, tv-shows, and movies, but he never thought it'd happen to him, too.

this was officially the best day of his life!

jisung eagerly took chan's hand, holding it firmly and shaking it with the happiest smile on his face.

"so- so does this mean a yes!?"

"not yet, jisung. seems like you guys don't really have your stuff on you, so.. i'm gonna head out for a quick call and we can go to the band's studio together, yeah? i'll see if i can borrow a guitar and a bass from anybody."

//

jisung and hyunjin had very different reactions to being in a car with a stranger and having absolutely no idea where they were going.

jisung was as excited as ever, eyes bright and asking chan all sorts of questions about the band.

hyunjin, on the other hand, is a nervous wreck. teeth gnawing on his straw. his hand running through his hair for the millionth time. knee bouncing. eyes sad and brows furrowed making him look like he was about to cry. staring out the car window like the main protagonist in a slice of life anime.

it was fun. very fun. jisung even laughed a little.

they eventually arrived at some random house, and chan told them to wait inside as he went to go get their borrowed guitar and bass. perfect opportunity to talk in private.

hyunjin waited until chan was fully out of sight before turning around to look at jisung and shaking his shoulder with one hand, the other still holding his coffee cup.

"what is wrong with you, jiji!? we're in a random car with a random guy we know nothing about, and we have no idea where we're going! i-"

"hyunjin-"

"look, i get you really want to be in a band, but.. don't you think this is a little reckless? even if that chan guy is actually trustworthy, we don't know what's gonna happen to us after this! what if we just joined this for.. nothing? no gigs, no.. no.. no nothing!"

"hyunjin!" jisung blurted out.

"what?"

"just calm down, alright? honestly, i'm a little scared, too, but you just gotta take whatever chances you get! we've been practicing for ages, and everything as of right now seems pretty legit. just.. go with the flow, bro. if anything goes wrong, we can call minho-hyung, right?"

"minho-hyung.. ugh, this is so.. eugh!"

hyunjin punched the air out of frustration and slumped back in his seat, taking a long sip of his coffee.

meanwhile, jisung reached out and stroked his friend's head with a sheepish smile, gently shushing him.

the duo watched as chan came back with two cases and circled around the car to put them in the trunk, their hands interlocked tightly together, both shaking. one was shaking from excitement, while the other was from nervousness.

the blonde haired guy circled back around and settled in the drivers seat, buckling his seatbelt, and looking in the rearview mirror to make sure the duo was okay before starting up the car.

"we're heading to the studio now."

//

after just a few minutes, they'd arrived at somebody's house, and chan lead them inside while carrying both of the cases.

"our singer, seungmin, lives here with his parents and his sister. they don't mind the noise majority of the time, so just get comfortable, okay you two? the members should be here by now."

right from the doorway, the sounds of the guitar strumming and keys playing could be heard coming from just nearby, making han cringe slightly. he wasn't too fond of the idea of other people being able to hear him practice, but hyunjin seemed to be okay with it, so he was okay with it, too.

following chan into the living room, jisung's eyes lit up and he grabbed ahold of hyunjin's sleeve, bright eyes locked on the boy testing out the mic and tuning the guitar.

"hyunjin.. i think i've fallen in love," he whispered.
