You’re In The Kitchen Humming

Work Text:

What are we thinking?” Will Byers wasn’t so sure why it was that his boyfriend doing such casual things like making mac n cheese made his stomach fill with butterflies.

“Extra cheese?” He shrugged. Mike replied with a cheesy smile, turning Will’s heart into slimy goo. They’d been dating for three months. A part of him never believed it when he reminded himself of the fact almost every morning in the mirror.

It took him a while to realize it wasn’t a cruel dream that seemed to last forever, and that after all, he finally had the boy of his dreams.

His sister approved, and was probably the happiest out of all of their friends, not to his shock. El was a very understanding and sweet person after all.

They were in the Byers kitchen, making dinner, since Mike was sleeping over, as usual every weekend for the past three weeks. He was sure Mike’s parents were missing him at home, since he spent most of his time at Will’s.

They’d usually study together after school and do homework, or Mike would watch Will paint in his room like a total creep. (Will loved every single second of it.)

He’d tell Will he was focusing on his comic, knowing well it was a lie. The thought made him smile.

“What are you grinning about? Remembering our canceled science test?” Mike chirped from the counter, mixing the cheese into the pot. He was wearing one of Will’s long sleeved shirts, which was small on him. The sleeves were by his elbows.

Will giggled. “Hey! I love science.”

“That’s because you’re Mr. Clarks favorite.” Mike grunted, teasing him. He made a face in response, shaking his head. “Absolutely not. I’m just actually good at science and pay attention in class unlike others.”

“Are you saying I don’t?” The frizzy-haired boy turned around with an exaggerated slow motion, his eyes on Will, who was now hopping off the counter. “No… I never said that. Why would I say such a thing? It’s not like you and Lucas talk the whole pe-“

Mike was over in an instant, wrapping his arms around him. “Mike!” Will shrieked in laughter, his heart threatening to burst from his chest. He would never be able to explain how these kinds of moments filled his heart with joy.

His feet lifted from the ground unexpectedly. “Mike, MIKE DO NOT—“ he grasped at his boyfriend’s back as he lifted him with surprising strength. Jeez, since when had he gotten so strong?

He wobbled a bit under the weight, spinning them around. The kitchen lights blurred in his sight, laughter filling the room.

“Say you take it back.” Mike said, poking Will’s side. Will shrieked, gripping him tighter. “I take it back!” Mike put him down slowly, bending his back lightly.

Will shoved his chest with a smile. “Rude.”

“What?” The other scoffed with a roll of his eyes. “You’re calling me fat.” Will’s pretended to be offended when he opened his mouth to speak and nothing came out, as if in thought.

Mike chuckled, shaking his head. “I’m only teasing.”

“I’d hope so, you’re such a meanie.” His tone was soft, and his smile didn’t help him in acting  tuff. “Don’t act innocent.” Mike murmured, wrapping both arms around Will’s torso.

Will had dreamed of times like this when he was just thirteen. He grinned stupidly, cupping the back of Mike’s neck. “You have no proof.” He whispered.

“Yeah?”

“Mhm.”

Mike pressed his lips to Will’s gently, innocently  nipping at his lower lip. Will let out a quiet sigh, his fingers playing with Mike’s locks. “Don’t cut your hair.” He mumbled against his lips, tugging gently at one of the dark strands.

“Hm?” Mike hummed, parting his lips to intrude.

Will hummed contently, forgetting what he was going to say after that. “I won’t.” Mike said, smiling against his lips, getting a bigger smile from Will.

The oven beeped, making them both jump.

“Don’t burn our dinner.” He groaned, pushing Mike toward it. He laughed innocently, a blush on his face. “That was your fault for distracting me.”

Will gasped. “You’re the one that kissed me!”

They stood under the warm yellow light of the kitchen, talking utter nonsense and grinning at each other while deciding whose fault it was.

Let’s just say the conversation didn’t end for a while.
