Chapter Text
It was a normal day for Karasuno high’s boys volleyball team. Or, well, as normal as they get.
Everyone was practicing as hard as they could, basically punching their limit. Though, as they were doing that, they were goofing off as normal.
Kiyoko showed up late, so late that even Tanaka and Nishinoya had given up on seeing her today. She apologized and the two boys stopped what they were doing to go run at her. She dodged, as normal.
Kageyama and Hinata weren’t talking to each other, though. The team all knew why. Two nights ago, they had been practicing late again with Yachi. When Hinata told his volleyball partner that he didn’t want to keep spiking the ball with his eyes closed anymore, he wanted to be able to spike the ball normally. Like everyone else could do.
This ultimately led to a fight between the two. All though, this wasn’t like one of their normal brawls. No, this one went full on physical. On both sides, too. Unlike how Kageyama would throw Hinata around.
They were throwing punches and grabbing and launching, completely forgetting Yachi was watching. She had to run out and grab Tanaka to separate the two boys, and they two haven’t spoken to each other since.
Their teammates were getting worried. Even Tsukkishima seemed to care even little, though, if he really did, that was knowledge only he and Yamaguchi had.
So everyone was worried about the two. They had just started to actually get along, and now their progress was non-existent. Their relationship as teammates had spiked up just to be launched to worse then how they started.
Daichi was most concerned, though. He thought if he could get the two to work together in practice it would all work out. So he tried.
“Kageyama! Hinata!” He yelled from across the gym. This got everyone's attention. Sugawara looked up at him from where he sat drinking from his water bottle. He gave the captain the most faithless look he had ever seen Suga give. Daichi chose to ignore it, he had bigger problems to work on anyway.
“I want you to work on your receives with Noya!” he finished. Nishinoya took his attention off Kyoko and on to the two first years.
Noya felt his heart drop. He did not want to get into the middle of whatever that was.
‘Lovers quarrel’, he had called it when Tanaka had told him what had happened. ‘They’ll figure it out by next practice.’ They did not in fact figure it out by next practice.
Kageyama bowed at Daichi from where he was on the other side of the gym.
“Forgive me Daichi-san, but I don’t think my receives are an issue. I think it would be better for me to work on setting to Tanaka-san or Asahi-san.” He told his captain.
Daichi gritted his teeth. He gave up! He officially gave up! Those two would have to figure it out on their own, because no one else was throwing them anymore bones, he decided.
“Fine.” He held the bridge of his nose. “But Hinata, Noya, I want you to practice receiving those spikes, got it?”
“Yes!” The two yelled, running to their side of the net. They exchanged a few words, and smiled.
Nishinoya and Hinata had become good friends quickly, even if Nishinoya was his upperclassmen. Hinata looked up to him--or down, technically--, even though he wasn’t an ace like Hinata strived to be.
Sugawara stood up and walked over to stand next to Daichi.
“You really thought they would agree to that, huh?” He told his captain, slightly. Daichi sighed. He really hadn’t, but he didn’t have any better ideas.
Tanaka, Asahi and Kageyama took their place on their side of the net to practice setting and spiking.
Yachi passed Kageyama a ball, he set it to Tanaka, Tanaka spiked it, and Noya received it. That was how normally this happened, basic really. Boring even, the boys might have thought, but alas, even boring things are enjoyable when you love what you're doing.
They kept doing this for a solid twenty minutes. Kageyama switching who he was setting to and Hinata and Nishinoya mixing up who's receiving the ball. Hinata did manage to get one receive, with his face--yes, but still!
Just as Kageyama was getting ready to spike the ball, they heard a loud screech from outside the gym. He stopped mid air, ball hitting his head. Tsukishima and Yamaguchi, who were passing on the side, snickered at their fellow first year.
“Nice going, king.” Tsukishima cackeled.
“Tsukki!” Yamaguchi laughed along. The two completely ignoring the sound from outside.
“Shimizu!” Daichi called out to the older manager. “Do you mind checking that out?” He asked politely. She nodded, and walked out the screen door.
~~~~~~~
Everyone was on the edge of their seats waiting to see who--or what--had made that sound. Then they heard it again, closer this time. They had stopped practicing, as they were not able to focus.
The squealing turned to words as it got closer. Though they were still pretty far away, they could make out some of the words correctly. Thankfully the person was talking loudly.
“I can’t believe it’s you, Kiyoko-san!” the voice giggled. “It feels weird calling you that now, don’t you think, T-.” The voice was cut off with a loud yell.
“STOP BEING AN IDIOT!” the second person yelled and the first squealed in fear.
Finally, Kiyoko opened the screen, she walked in gracefully as normal, but for the first time, all eyes weren’t on her. They were on the two men she had led into the high school volleyball team’s gym.
The one skipping right behind her was slightly taller than her, though his wild orange hair might give him some more height. The man had a tan, though, not that deep, he was definitely still Japanese. He just must be in the sun a lot. He had a smile that lit up the room as he walked in. He was wearing a red tracksuit and holding a volleyball. The man who followed was much taller, taller than 6 feet at least. His hair landed loosely above his eyes in a straight line, and he was wearing the same red tracksuit as the shorter man. He gave off an unsettling presence. Or, maybe that was just from the scowl on his face.
The whole room was shocked. The two men looked exactly like their--not on good terms--first year freak duo, just--older.
“WOAH!!!!” The shorter man yelled in excitement, running over to Hinata. “We did travel back in time!! I knew it! I win!” The man ruffled the first year’s hair. The man with the darker hair rolled his eyes.
“Uh-, who are you exactly?” Daichi asked, trying to gain control of the situation. He was in charge even when Coach Ukai was here, but especially when he was gone like today.
“Ah-!” The tanned ginger exclaimed. “Mini Daichi-san! I’m future Hinata Shoyo!” he pointed at the man he had walked in with, “And that's future grumpyyama-kun, hehe~!” he giggled to himself like a teenager. There was a collective gasp from the volleyball players. Yachi ran and hid behind the closest person to her, that being Tanaka.
“Hey! I’m not grumpy! I’m just…confused.” future Kageyama defended himself. Future Hinata stuck his tongue out at the man.
“Aren’t you always?” he baited. Future Kageyama ran over and grabbed older Hinata’s tracksuit collar and shook him. “Okay, okay, I’m sorry!” The abused man squealed out, half giggling still.
The teenagers all stayed in the same spots they had all been in. Mouths open wide in shock, eyes wide in confusion. There was no way this was happening, it wasn’t possible! Time travel isn’t possible.
Younger Hinata was the first to talk.
“This is so cool! You’re really me? How far into the future are you from? Am I on a professional volleyball team? Do I get better at receiving? How's the future? Do we go to nationals? Are we all still friends? Do I become the next little giant?!” He bombarded his future self with questions.
“Hinata,” Daichi called, getting both the ginger’s attention. “Or- er-, baby Hinata, that’s enough questions, give him time to answer them. And-also, we don’t even know if this is real! It could be some random creeps for all we know!”
“Baby Hinata-?” Hinata whispered, loud enough to hear, but the only acknowledgement was a snicker from a certain blonde middle blocker.
“You can call me Shoyo, if it helps differentiate the two of us,” Future Shoyo stated. “And you can call him Tobio!” He pointed over at the still scowling, now arms crossed, future Tobio. “And I can explain how we’re real! Just, what's the date?”
Suga walked forward, inspecting the man, who had come to stand next to Tobio. Sugawara looked back at Daichi, gave him a big smile and a thumbs up. Suga thought it was real. That didn’t help Daichi at all. Don’t get him wrong, he loved his vice-captain, he has had a crush on him since second year, but he wasn’t the most mature, and would be quick to qualifying this as real.
“It’s August 7, 2012!” Suga turns back to the two guys, placing his hands on his hips. The other Karasuno members still confused, or scared, or even both. Tobio flinches at the date, and Shoyo’s smile fades, just a little.
“Ah.” He says, smiling again. “Well, I know Tsukishima has a green dinosaur stuffie he sleeps with every night because it reminds him of a special someone~!” He gave as proof.
Tsukishima pushed up his glasses. “Not true,” he murmured under his breath. Yamaguchi lowered his head at ‘special someone’. God, those two were oblivious.
“Give us something else, something we can actually..confirm.” Tanaka growled, still being used as a shield for Yachi.
“Sugawara-sempai has a crush on Daichi-san, and has since the beginning of their first year.” Tobio shrugged. He got elbowed in the stomach by Shoyo, who was still standing next to him.
Suga went red. Asahi laughed so hard he fell over, Noya had to run over and catch him before he could get injured. Daichi stood there. His eyes no longer placed on the future monster duo, but his vice-captain.
~~~~~~~
After calming the third years down, Suga confirmed what Tobio had told everyone. He and Daichi decided to talk about it later, because they obviously had bigger things on their hands at the moment.
They all sat in a half circle around the two adults to ask questions and learn more about the future. Ennoshita told them it might not be the best idea, because it could mess up the timeline, but no one agreed and they asked questions anyway.
“So how old are you?” Yachi cocked her head to one side. It was surprising that the timid girl would be the first person to ask the first official question, but she had.
“Oh! Mini Yacchan! I’m 27! And Tobio here is 26!” He pointed at his setter next to him. “He’s so young!” Tobio sliced his stomach with his knife hand, causing Shoyo to yelp in pain.
“OW! You idiot!” They started wrestling on the floor in front of all the people around them.
Kageyama glanced at Hinata from the opposite side of the circle just to see Hinata looking up at him, too. The both quickly looked away, averting all eye contact.
The two men stopped fighting and sat back up properly.
“You guys still play volleyball?” Narita asks, knowing the answer. As if these two idiots can live without volleyball.
The two shared a look, and turned back to the team with a shit-eating grins on their faces.
“Of course!” Tobio says, unzipping his track sweater to reveal a Japan National team jersey. The number 9 imprinted in the middle, like his number now.
The room went silent again. JAws were dropped, tears were locked in eyes, there but not quite falling.
“OH MY GOD!” at least half the team yelled at the same team. They hugged Kageyama and celebrated. It definitely wasn’t everyday you had a high school join your countries national team.
“Hey! Me too!” Shoyo unzipped his sweatshirt as well to reveal a matching jersey with the number 10.
This time there was a lot more screaming. And definitely tears. Hinata broke out sobbing happy tears, and was being squeezed to death by Suga, Noya and Tanaka in celebration. People could maybe have seen Kageyama joining the national team, but it was surprising to see Hinata, as he wasn’t as good.
“I- How!?” He asks, after everyone had settled down.
Shoyo smirked. “A lot of practice, beach Volleyball in Brazil for two years after high school helped a lot, and training with the MSBY Black Jackals helped, and a lot more practice.”
“Brazil?!” and “MSBY?!” are yelled by different people around the circle. At this point, it was too confusing to tell who was talking, so Shoyo just nodded. He had worked hard to get to where he was now, so he had the right to bask in the glory.
Hinata nearly passes out.
~~~~~~~
After everyone calmed down again, they started talking about other team members' futures. Everyone was super surprised when they found out Tsukishima went pro. Then even more surprised when they found out Tsukishima still hangs out with the future freak duo.
“You guys clearly made up,” Ennoshita mused. “When?” Shoyo smiled softly, Tobio’s face also lit up as much as it could.
“About two weeks from your time, right Tobio?” Shoyo turns to him. Tobio nods.
“HUH?!” Hinata and Kageyama yell from their respective sides of the half circle. The two first years looked at each other, then back at their adult counterparts.
“Why?!” Hinata yells, standing up and pointing at Kageyama. “I don’t think I’ll ever not be mad at him!”
“Yeah!” Kageyama yelled from the ground.
“Well, I practice super hard to be able to do a pinpoint set so he can hit it…” Tobio tells everyone awkwardly, not meeting anyone's eyes. Shoyo smiles wide. Kageyama goes red, and, like his future self, won’t meet anyone’s eyes. Especially Hinatas.
Hinata’s jar dropped. He thought Kageyama might never set to him again! Not after what happened the other night. He thought he might even hate short boy. But now, on a random day during one of the few practices their coach couldn’t make it to, he was listening to how Kageyama--his prideful setter and rival--would change how he set just for Hinata.
“WHAT?!” Hinata squeaks out for what must be the tenth time today. He was as white as a sheet of paper.
“I guess the King’s not as prideful as we thought,” Tsukishima muses, showing off his signature smirk. Yamaguchi snickers from beside him. This earns them one of Daichi’s signature glares that are strong enough to even shut up Tsukishima.
“He really is,” Shoyo smirked, poking at the man next to him. That got his hand slapped by Tobio.
“Am not!” He yells. The two adults start fighting again.
“HEY! YOU TWO! STOP FIGHTING!” Daichi orders. Even though he’s not their captain anymore, the two are still terrified of Daichi. Maybe even more now.
“Sorry Daichi-san!”
“Soooo,” Nishinoya speaks up from where he is sitting in between Hinata and Asahi. “Are you two on the same team anymore? Like, other than the national team I mean, like, normal volleyball season.”
Hinata and Kageyama’s aura completely changes. Sugawara pats the young setter on the back gently, though no one really notices.
“Ah-, no.” Tobio says, unfazed.
“BAKAYAMA!!” Shoyo screams. “Can’t you tell baby us are upset about this?” He points to the teenagers, who are both noticeably deflated. They haven’t been playing with each other long. They never really got along, hell, they just got into a huge fight and maybe even hate each other at the moment, but, they both have to admit--they are a good team. They work well together, everyone can see it.
“I beat him in, like, twenty games!” Shoyo tells everyone excitedly. That makes Hinata change from being upset to being super proud and happy. His eyes basically turn into stars.
~~~~~~~
The group splits. Kageyama, Sugawara and Ennoshita are still sitting with Tobio. He’s explaining everything about his volleyball life. Sugawara and Kageyama are very interested, while Ennoshita doesn’t seem to care as much.
Hinata, Yachi, Yamaguchi, Tanaka and Nishinoya are standing near the stage with Shoyo. Nishinoya is jumping on his ginger underclassmen. Hinata’s face is still glued with stars. Yachi is smiling very big, and she keeps telling Hinata how proud she is of him. Yamaguchi is listening with pride as well. He’s happy for his friend. That he got what he wanted, but he can’t help but wonder if they are still friends in the future. All his doubt in that disappeared when Shoyo started talking about how Yamaguchi makes Tsukishima come with him to all his games, and watch the ones they can’t make it to. Apparently, Tsukishima and Yamaguchi are still together in the future. Those two facts are enough to put Yamaguchi in a more calm state.
When Tanaka hears he and Kyoko are married in the future. He screams like a little girl. Then, he takes his shirt off and spins it in the air. Noya seems upset about this news, though, not that sad. He’s happy his friend could be happy. And he’s happy to know Kyoko is with a good man, but it still stings a little, knowing that he won’t ever have a chance with the girl of his dreams. He perks up again after hearing he gets to travel the world.
Daichi is talking to Asahi about what they should practice next. Narita and Kinoshita are passing a ball back and forth.
Tsukishima is listening to music somewhere in the background, wondering when he can go home. Practice technically wasn’t over yet, but no one could really focus because of the huge elephant in the room.
“Are you in a relationship?” was the next question everyone was interested in. Sugawara had asked Tobio that. Kageyama had told him ‘of course not! I’m focused on volleyball!’. But his future self nodded.
“I am in a relationship!” He says only loud enough for the small group surrounding him to hear.
Suga almost faints. Even Ennoshita is surprised, he thought for sure the volleyball loving freak would only be able to think about that.
“You think about stuff other than volleyball long enough to be in a relationship?” Sugawara yells. The gym goes silent. Even Tsukishima takes his headphones off to listen to what’s happening.
“Kageyama’s in a relationship?” Asahi asks Daichi, who's standing next to him, impressed. He walks over and claps Tobio on the back, knocking him over a little.
“Congrats, man.” He laughed a little. “You were the last person we expected to get into a relationship. I mean we know you're popular with the girls and all, but I thought volleyball was your priority.”
From across the room Shoyo snickers. He walks over to the other group, the others following like little ducklings. Narita and Kinoshita followed, too.
“You're in a relationship, Tobio?” He smirked, placing a hand on the setter. Tobio’s face goes red, though no one notices.
“Idiot!” He slaps Shoyo on the back of his head, earning him a small huff of pain from the shorter man.
“Well I’m also in a relationship!” The ginger says, rubbing the back of his head.
Kiyoko appeared next to Yachi, scaring the young manager. Kiyoko apologizes quickly and quietly to the blonde and focused her attention on the future volleyball players.
“Who?!?!” Hinata asked, jumping up and down, reaching a height over Yachi’s head. The poor girl ran and hid behind Kiyoko.
Shoyo smirks, he looks at Tobio and gives him a small kiss on the cheek.
The whole room went silent. Tobio sat there, getting more red as time passed by. The first year monster duo turned the same shade of crimson red.
The rest of the team were shocked, other than Yachi, who Hinata had told about his crush on his setter. Though, everyone had kind of seen it coming. The two had a strange relationship.
“Why him?!” Hinata finally yells after what feels like forever of silence.
