Gem breathed out, smiling at the little clouds her breath made. She rubbed her gloved-covered hands together, trying to warm them up. It was very cold outside.
It was almost Christmas, and she was celebrating Christmas Eve with Impulse and Pearl. She had taken the train and was now walking over to Impulse’, a big bag in her hand. It was filled to the brim with presents. Technically she was supposed to bring one present for Impulse and one for Pearl. Gem went a little overboard.
She rang Impulse’ doorbell.
‘Hey Gem!’ Impulse opened the door wearing the most ridiculous Christmas sweater.
Gem burst out laughing. ‘What are you wearing?’ She wheezed.
Impulse looked a little defeated. ‘Why did both of you react the same way?’
‘Hey Gem!’ Pearl appeared behind Impulse.
‘Hey.’ Gem waved.
‘Wow.’ Pearl peeked into Gem’s bag. ‘Lotta presents.’
Impulse chuckled. ‘Come inside, alright? It’s cold.’
Gem looked at his sweater and then at Pearl. Both of the girls burst out laughing.
Impulse sighed. ‘Pearl made dinner, please come in.’
Gem was sitting in front of the couch, scrolling through Impulse’ Netfix, looking for a fun Christmas movie. Pearl was preparing the last bit of the dinner (which Gem was pretty sure was a bunch of snacks put together), and Impulse was reading a book next to Gem, actually sitting on the couch.
Pearl came walking in from the kitchen, carrying a plate full of food. She was dressed in a cute black sparkly dress, with a warm brown sweater on top. It wasn’t the type Impulse was wearing, it was actually pretty. Gem was also wearing a dress, but a green comfy one.
‘Found something.’ She stopped on Love Actually.
Pearl sat down next to her. ‘Here, food.’
‘Haven’t we watched Love, Actually already? Like 5 times?’ Impulse had put down his book and was now leaning forward to grab a snack.
Gem grabbed a pig in a blanket. ‘Who cares?’
Pearl giggled. ‘Exactly.’
Impulse sighed. ‘Can I ever win any debate from you two?’
‘Yeah, if I side with you. I can convince Pearl very easily.’ Gem nodded with a smirk on her face.
‘You can’t!’ Pearl grabbed the tv-remote and pressed play. ‘Have fun!’
They just continued chatting through the movie. Impulse was right, they had watched this movie a lot of times and knew exactly what was going to happen. That didn’t stop Pearl from cheering at every doggie she saw and Gem and Impulse from arguing about who the best character was.
‘Why don’t you guys just sit on the couch?’ Impulse asked, spooning his soup in his mouth. Pearl had prepared a massive pan of mushroom soup (their shared favourite), and all three of them were now enjoying them.
‘Because.’ Pearl chuckled.
Gem smiled. ‘This is comfy! Why don’t you join us?’
‘This is also comfy.’ Impulse countered.
Pearl looked behind her at Impulse. ‘You’re gonna spill that.’ She sounded like a true prophetist.
‘You sounded so convinced.’ Gem giggled.
Pearl laughed. ‘I am convinced!’ She did some weird movement, and suddenly some of her own soup spilled. ‘Oops.’
Impulse laughed. ‘And that’s what we call karma.’
After dinner and the movie, it was present time. They exchanged presents all at the same time, so it was a massive chaos.
‘Oh my gosh, thanks Gem!’ Pearl jumped on her, trying to hug her very aggressively. In the meantime, Gem was still trying to open her own present.
‘What did she get you?’ Impulse asked whilst pulling out another Christmas sweater. ‘Ah, thanks Pearl.’ It was one of his own, but actually one that looked a little bit pretty.
‘A necklace.’ Pearl was grinning from ear to ear.
Gem rubbed her hand through Pearl’s hair, knowing how much it annoyed Pearl. ‘You’re welcome.’
Gem loved her friends, but she was a little tired now. She put on her coat, ready to go. Pearl was sleeping over, but Gem had to leave for her family tomorrow morning and her own place was way closer (and she didn’t want to wake up night-owl Pearl).
‘You sure you don’t want to sleep over?’ Impulse had changed into the sweater Pearl stole from his closet and then gifted him.
‘Yeah.’ Gem smiled and put on her new hat. Impulse had gifted it to her and it was green with snowflakes.
‘Pretty hat.’ Pearl smiled, wrapping her arms around Gem. ‘Love you.’
‘Someone’s tired.’ Impulse smiled. He gave her a sideways dude hug. ‘Love you too.’
‘Love you guys!’ Gem grinned and went out the door.
