Outcast: The Maned-Lioness

Summary:

Set before exile and told in the last days of unquestioned loyalty, Prideful Prideless: The Maned-Lioness is a story about names that fit too tightly, pride that demands silence, and the cost of being seen only halfway.
Raised among the hunters of a proud lion society, Snapper earns her name through speed, precision, and a bite that ends the chase without mercy. The pride calls her blessed by the goddesses, praises her strength, and crowns her with a name meant to honor who they believe her to be.

But inside, something doesn’t fit. As Snapper rises in the Hunt Chief’s favor, she wrestles with an identity she cannot yet name, caught between the role the pride demands and the truth clawing its way to the surface. In a world where tradition is law and belonging is survival, questioning who you are is more dangerous than facing prey with horns and hooves.

Chapter 1: The Hunt Chief’s Naming.

Chapter Text

“As Hunt Chief of this pride, I put forward that this lioness shall hence be known as Snapper. All in agreement, lend me your voices!” Roars of approval rose from the pride as BrightSlumber finished speaking. I had earned my name and place in my pride, yet I should have been happier about it.

I froze for a moment hearing my dad, Snakemane, speak to the clan. “Congratulate your pridemate, then you’re dismissed.”

Most of the congratulations were quick and kind. I was just about to go to the River when two cubs came running towards me. I recognised them as my two younger brothers. “What do you dimwits want?” I teased the cubs.

“We wanted to congratulate you on getting your name!” Chase spoke, his violet eyes shining in the light. The same his brother had. They looked the exact same, grey with violet eyes. Though, they acted completely different.

“Right, well, thank you” I smiled, giving him a pat on the head. “Now, I need to go get water. I’ll see you cubs later.”

The River was beautiful as always, tall grass and crystal clear water. I sighed before walking closer to the water, lapping it up. The water was nice and cool, like it was touched by Cansu herself. It was calming, then I heard a twig snap behind me.

My head shot up. I paused for a few moments, walking towards the sound. I nearly tripped when I accidentally stepped on a deep paw print. “Who’s there?” I called out, my voice met with nothing. I sniffed the air, a stomach turning scent hit my nose. It didn’t smell bad, but the meaning was horrible. It smelt of No-Mane.

“I and my pride under the protection of SnakeMane, show yourself now.” I demanded. There was no response, yet again. “..hello?” I called out once more. Silence. I was sick to my stomach now, a No-Mane on our territory could mean my dad dies, along with my brothers.

“I should get home.” I muttered to myself.
